thought i would watch how the universe works for game tips while servers are down did not mention elite dangerous once what a waste of time

I work in software, I feel their pain. I know what's going on, it's a self-flagellating, thrashing hell they're in right now. I do agree on the release times though, work out where you're getting the least number of players from and roll the patch out at that point - or else have a known solid stable server / release and a beta release server / version combo for the daring. Beta testing your actual users isn't great.
I'm an Alpha backer but only actually started playing maybe a month ago (very late, I know). Have enjoyed myself up until this point - if it's offline, then it's offline, I guess, but still... oh well, back to drumming!

Of course. But it would be nice if they kept us informed of the state of play, at least with regard to retreating ETA. If they really wanted to make us think they care they might even give us some idea of the problem is.
