Elite Dangerous and Widescreen monitors.

Hello,

I bought a LG 34 inch monitor (doesn't matter what type), it was a 2k monitor. Elite looked horrible on it! The "blacks" and the "lighting", i.e. spotlights at stations looked so pixelated, it was barely playable. I have no problems with the colors on my 1080p monitor, for that matter I had no problems with any other game on the widescreen. I know that Elite is supposed to be scalable, but it seems that it doesn't like being "stretched" higher than 1080p.

Does anyone else have this problem when using a widescreen monitor?

Thanks

I run ED on a 1920x1200 display, ie a 16:10 ratio (mine is more squarish) instead of the usual widescreen 16:9 ratio. I haven't had any problems with using a different resolution in terms of 3D graphics, although there are problems with the interface when using something other than 1080p ratio I think (I have issues with the galactic/system map and so do others with ultra wide screen).

If your 34" display is running 1920x1080 it will probably be fairly easy to see pixelation if you are relatively close to the display. Using graphics options like SMAA (post processing anti-aliasing) can help blend some of the pixelation away.

Supersampling is a good option for a more powerful graphics card; I run that at x1.5 to give me slightly more finer detail on my display then I would without it.

Looking though at your post again, it sounds like something else...are you getting pixelation in areas that are supposed to be pure black? I've seen something like this on fairly cheap displays (although in my experience LG has fantastic quality displays).

Might be worth checking out the Hardware & Technical Forum:

Check your resolution. 2560x1080 is probably your native resolution. Make sure the native resolution is available and selected.
Check your video color settings - and reset everything to get rid of any inadvertent modifications.

Are you using nvidia gpu?

I added a widescreen (found a deal at Costco) but then discovered HDMI would not support two monitors from my GeForce GTX 980. I had to switch cables to achieve native resolution on both monitors.

A while back I bought an AOC 144Hz Freesync monitor, it's connected via displayport (it has to be to get more than 60Hz) to my now aging Nvidia GTX970.

In games I see colour banding and other poor colour control in areas of subtle shading, and the picture is generally too bright. The desktop is okay.

When I first got the monitor I spent a while trying to track down a solution, using different settings both on the monitor and in windows & games, with little success. There is a known issue that sort of sits with Nvidia where displayport can lower the apparent number of colours (from 32k to 16k I presume). Your issue may be related to mine, and has nothing to do with the game AFAIK. ED still looks beautiful on my older (60Hz) monitor, but the higher framerate on the new monitor is worth more to me than the lack of colour banding.

hth.

I investigated on-line and it seems likely you have an IPS LCD display (which is good). Super-fast LCDs often use a different technology, which doesn't have particularly good color rendition.

Something else to consider: Is your system able to run at a reasonable frame rate? ED automatically switches to low-res textures, whenever the framerate drops too low (at around 30 fps). In game, use Ctrl+F to enable framerate display. It's even color-coded (so you can tell if you are OK at a glance): green for 60+ fps, yellow, and then red for 30 fps and below.

I am running on a 27" IPS 4k monitor, at 4k resolution, have zero issues. Unless the monitor is a really crappy one, settings are likely the OPs issue.

Possibly tangential but running ED in 'windowed borderless' and 'full screen' modes gave very different looks to ED for me - one was very flat and too bright, the other was great. I can't now recall which was which.

Might be worth a look and trying to swap.

I have a GeForce Gtx 770 with a fairly poor quality LCD screen.

Can you do a screen capture in-game (using the F10 key) and post it? We can give better advice if we can actually see the problem.

I have the dell/Alienware ultrawide and I don’t have an colour issues for elite so it sounds like it’s something with your settings, as I’m running at 3440x1440 without any issues. As someone mentioned earlier double check the in game settings and make sure you don’t any anything in the graphicsconfig file that might mess with anything (although the only thing I can think of that would change how colours appear would be reshade or EDFX). Perhaps it might be worth wiping the game install and reinstalling it clean?

good luck and im sure you will get it going in all it’s glory soon.

Open the Nvidia control panel. You need to switch from limited range colour depth (16-255) to full range (0-255). It's in the Nvidia colour settings.

If it's an issue with the monitor the screen cap should be fine since that's capturing a frame from VRAM, it's likely the issue is outside the PC, so the monitor having issues with the display output settings. So yes a screen cap cold be very informative.

Thank you, it's on the resolution page & I already have it set to full, I have tried to fix it before without complete success. If you're interested the monitor is an AOC 2460G4, there is a reddit thread discussing the issue here:

Ultimately the solution is probably to buy a better monitor but it's good enough that I didn't return it. My old monitor is an LG 60Hz LCD one that is now a bit too dark (it's 8 years old) connected via DVI and colour reproduction on that one is fine. Modern technology isn't better at everything ;)

I have a hp LA2405x 24 inch backlit monitor and it looks awesome. Try changing cables. I use a DVI cable. Or try a display port (HDMI) cable. I had a VGA cord and the graphics sucked. VGA is just outdated 80's tech

I have an LG 34" ultrawide 144hz Freesync monitor 2560x1080 so it may be the same as yours. It's ok in Elite, I just had to use a manually set FOV (beyond the slider in options). When I saw your post, I was thinking about "show some love" for us ultrawide folks (in galaxy map where selecting something is a mess, but also at FOV, etc. level).

You just have to be sure that you install the monitor driver (but I had to delete the color profile also installed because it made a mess of my colors and gamma in Windows and in the game) and set in-game the native resolution and frequency to the max values.

Sometimes I have some issues with 144Hz in game (blank screens for fractions of a second), but it's mostly driver or coming back from sleep issues (the video card gives some wrong parameters, maybe above 144Hz or bad timings) because lowering to 120Hz always cures it.

If everything is set up properly, you still may be offended by the big pixels or IPS glow/backlight bleeding. Running with >1 supersampling from in game settings helps the AA, but the video card should be powerful enough for this. Oh, and use display port and a good cable.

You're correct - I wrote that post when I was on my (Optimus) laptop and was going by the Intel settings.

Have you tried an HDMI cable? You can get 120Hz from HDMI 2.0. It's not 144Hz, but on my monitor I couldn't tell the difference when I tried it. 60Hz to 120Hz is just "OMFG THAT'S AMAZING" different, though. I'm still having trouble processing the difference it's made to playing BF1 - all those 1-on-1s I used to lose, I now generally win. E:D is just smoooooooooth.

This is the monitor specs, please note that I'm running this on a Nvidia Founders Edition 1080Ti card.

...the monitor is an AOC 2460G4...
That may explain your problem right there. I couldn't find an exact product match, but it appears that this may be a TN panel, which is known to have color issues and a more limited viewing angle than other panel types. (TN is an abbreviation for a particular LCD display technology.) TN panels are cheaper and faster than IPS panels and are therefore popular as gaming monitors. You can tweak the display settings and might see some improvement, but fundamentally, the color accuracy is not great.

Have you tried adjusting the "gamma" (brightness curve) in the ED in-game graphics settings? Moving the slider to the left will darken and to the right will brighten the in-game rendering. This is different than adjusting the monitor's brightness, so you might be able to improve things somewhat.

Something you may want to try, if you have a cable lying around, is using DVI instead of displayport. On my monitor (an Asus PB278) there's a marked improvement in image quality if you do this.
