Elite Dangerous | Cobra MK V Update - 12 December 2024

I see claims undermining is underpowered in general, but I think it's the playerbase that is underpowered, targeted concerted timed attacks could be devastating even in the current state but people just aren't up for it 🤷‍♀️
I don't think undermining is underpowered as such - sure, any individual system can be killed - but I do think that it needs a little bit more on the incentives side because reinforcement is just plain easier.

- System Strength Penalty makes undermining harder but doesn't affect reinforcement, so a SSP of Very High means all else equal the underminers need to do almost twice as much work ... for fairly unclear reasons. There's no equivalent which makes undermining easier than reinforcement for some systems.
- if you're in your own Power's space you get a ton of encouragments: your merit-earning activities are generally legal and supported by your Power, you get full access to your rank bonuses, they're often highly profitable in credits and materials too, they're often things you can do without even trying to Powerplay as such; if you're in enemy space you get almost none of that.

Targeted attacks run by big groups - if the big groups weren't almost all run by diplomats who don't want a giant 12-way brawl for some reason - sure, they can still work fine.

What's missing, I think, is that little bit of background pressure: if I go around not trying for merits and Powerplay success in my own space, I still end up with some merits from trade, bounties, a little bit of exploration data, ship scans, etc. If I do the same in unfriendly space then I probably get no merits at all, and most of the ways I could will cost me credits, or reputation, or other things. So the general disorganised ungroup of Powerplayers (who are the majority of the actual merits per week) are all just very gradually reinforcing everywhere.

Fixing the rares in PP 2.0 and a general balance pass to increase the amount of control points generated from activities would really be appreciated.

We all know and appreciate the Audio team at Fdev, Im hoping they havent played with the cobra engine sounds too much. My Arx will be made available as soon as I can get in game.

Well i have my trusty old mk3 cobra my not so great rare cobra mk 4 and soon as the servers up my new cobra mk 5 i do love this game i have been here since the beginning .
i dont listen to the Doom Sayers i think this game will be here for another 10+ years and if they decide to make a new version of Elite well ill be there too.
Its a Great game where we can all get away from real life and just go into space fly off into the Black and just enjoy life
And a merry Christmas to all commanders o5 all

I was forgetting to mention that only one power can reinforce a system but 11 powers can undermine it.

Fdev needs to be careful about changes that could lead to catastrophic instability.

you said we can go any activity and get good amount of merits no matter what we do.

So did you fix exploration and exobiology merits gains ?

Yes, though this is somewhat balanced out by the Beyond Frontline Penalty, so for most systems there are probably only one or two powers who can undermine with full efficiency, and many systems will have a lot of powers working at half efficiency or worse.

Very much so - keeping the control score movement relatively slow until everything is internally balanced is definitely the right thing to do.

About 30 minutes more before we start to find out how good the Cobra Mk5 really is - or the servers crash because everyone is trying to bring theirs out of the hangar 🤣

Am I the only one that thinks small ships are irrelevant for 90% of players at this point? There is no outpost/station with ONLY small landing pads.

About half of Odyssey settlements only have small pads, though, so a small ship is the only way to trade with them, sell exploration data there, or take ship missions from them.

There's also a bunch of activities which don't need either huge cargo capacity or excessive firepower where simply "being small and fast" is useful - landing on planets for exobiology, recon/operations activities in space, that sort of thing.
