Elite Dangerous data : is the game dying or growing ?

I've not played now for 3 weeks after hammering this game for all its worth for over a year, and i see myself not going back for a while longer yet.
All of those in our group are kind of doing the same now or have been so for longer than me.

I've held out for some life to be injected into the universe, but it just hasn't happened, which is a crying shame tbh.
Not sure what the devs are up to, but it's a lifeless, soulless place to fly around and they just haven't stepped up to the mark.

They've missed a great opportunity to create a thriving universe and it's barely changed since its inception.

I for one am gutted as back in the day it was an exciting prospect thinking about what was to possibly come. The reality is that not much came along at all...

Flying out of a lifeless universe and landing onto a lifeless planet is not going to cut it. :(

Total units sold has increased a lot, but many players have also stopped playing after a few months, because the game lacks variety and depth to keep them interested. They'll likely return with update 1.4, 1.5 and the Horizons expansions though.

Maybe for some, but there's plenty of "variety and depth" for me to keep playing even before the CQC attempt. I think some like the game, some love it, and some find it boring. Its the same thing for all games. This has never been a huge game (a la GTA 5), never will be..

I'm still puzzled how this and other threads relating to this topic and how much money FD has get started.

i'm not that familiar with 'Outside' myself but i have heard it said that the graphics are amazing even if it does lack a coherent storyline ;)

Actually its over-rated, the graphics are a bit crap. The physics are all wrong, the bloom is waaaaay too bright.

And if you think Elite Dangerous is a grind - you ain't seen NOTHING yet. To earn credits you actually have to go and do work!

The police AI is way over the top - if you get even slightly aggressive you get a ban lasting YEARS, and you can get perma-banned for a single PK.

Didn't commit to reading the OP : who goes to someone place and say "Data proving that your place is falling apart."

That's incredibly rude.

You're not discussing ED health on some fancy place, you're discussing ED health on ED official board. Show some respect...

DITTO!!

I second that.

This could be quite an amusing game. See if you can match moan threads in this forum to the same moan thread from the same point in the development of that other well known spacey shooty game, you know, the one that's full of griefers & psychopaths. :)

I bet we could pull up some doozies :)

Every game has its doommongers. I think the forums needs special badges for such people. They can wear them with pride.

Nah, Outside provides pretty average graphics - and the engine is spaghetti code madness - can't make heads or tails of it.

This is a niche game. Some burn out after twenty hours, others will play for thousands.

I'm not worried. I bought life time expansion packs and expect many more years of entertainment.

Ive not played for a week or so due to amd software issues. Plus it was a sunny weekend and I was out on my bike. This weekend is sunny too and I will be out on my bike once again in Cornwall. I switch in and out of the game. Sometimes I'm in reading mode and I read, other times I wield a spanner on my old rust heap laughingly described as a vw campervan and other times I am out blatting around the highways on my bike. Elite isnt something I devote my entire life too. Its a game. Granted its the current game that has my interest and one which will continue to have my interest. But I, along with others, will dive in and out of the game. On Dec release I played for a month or two solid, then left it for a month or two as sunshine means motorcycles. People have other things to do.

Well player retention is a tricky thing, once someone has played for X hrs you have pretty much used every mechanic the game has to offer and if the interaction between the player and the game has reached a plateau, they generally move on to other games, and occasionally dip their feet when new content arrives. Keeping players interested and playing is multifaceted "enjoyable game play mechanics", "depth of environment and player interaction", "social retention", "addictiveness" etc.. and these will be different breaking points for different people, but generally more is better in most cases...

It's too early to say what is going on with the game and considering it's still Early Access, I don't see why it should have an issue. Other EA games are doing fine.

The real issue facing ED is Star Citizen. When that launches we'll see how ED holds up so they better have their content sorted out before then because once people switch over, and if SC is all it's cracked up to be, people will just play the better game instead.

Popping by to clarify, Elite Dangerous is not in Early Access; Rodina for example is currently in Early Access. Granted there are closed, and in this case open, beta periods of major and minor patches; but the service itself is a complete release. I don't mean to be nitpicky, but let's call it as it is.

On a personal level, I'm more interested in No Man's Sky than Star Citizen. It looks like a lovely piece of work!

i'm fairly certain that Month Avg. Players will decrease in August for all games as we have this thing called 'nice weather' when people tend to spend a lot of time in a place called 'Outside'. i'm not that familiar with 'Outside' myself but i have heard it said that the graphics are amazing even if it does lack a coherent storyline ;)

Do you have a link to download this "outside"?

Game sales data :
22 April 2015 - 500.000 units sold (only PC)
31 August 2015 - 825,000 units sold (PC,Mac,Xbox)

Total unit sold grow by 65 %.

Steam stats:

Month Avg. Players
April 2015 4,471.1
August 2015 3,917.6
Avg. players number down by 12.4 %.

http://steamcharts.com/app/359320

We all know that 70-80 % of game slaes is in the first year since realase. So as current player base deacy we will see no new players around to replace them. If FD dont wake up and still will be crafting this grinding machine that Elite Dangerous is, open play will be pointless as option in menu ;).

Edit : I dont expect that ED will ever reach 2 millions unit sold when metacritic users score is 6.5/10 now and going down. http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/elite-dangerous/user-reviews?sort-by=date&num_items=100

Well, I sure am glad that I don't publish GTA V then, that game is utterly stuffed given the fall-off of the player base (from steam statistics):

Far worse than 12.5% there. Rockstar is finished. Yep. utterly dead in the water.
