Elite Dangerous: Horizons - How to Make a Real World Livestream on our official YouTube Channel 7PM BST 14th Oct

well. outposts can relocate/rebuild/defend themselves :p

Its a shame that atmospheric landings were not the introduction to planetary landings in a way.
Exploring specifically - the planets where you can land aren't generally the planets explorers pay much attention to as they are terribly unprofitable. Perhaps PL and the surface exploration involved with that will change things a little.

Yep. I haven't done much exploration myself, but even I know that after doing the initial honk if a planet looks like a bluish white ball you shouldn't waste any time on it. After Horizons I'll probably go over anyway just to admire it.

Just want to point out that we don't know all the details of what we could come across down on these planets yet in terms of gameplay and valuable "stuff"...so making assumptions about that they are "not worth it" is a tad bit early IMO. ;)

Indeed, I'm just on about that right now as of 1.4, they currently aren't - what, if anything, happens in the future is a surprise yet to come :)

Well, I think the whole world is currently watching it judging by the problems I'm having. It was super smooth earlier but I had to stop, and now it looks like YouTube is groaning under the sheer weight of space geeks having their minds blown. Which is a good thing, because from the bit I've managed to watch (up to 27 mins) this is absolutely incredible.

Stunning, it's like watching some kind of Nasa press release. :)

Amazing! I love the perfectionism in your work! You are not just creating a game... it's going to be a virtual, endless masterpiece!!!

Hey Matt,

Unfortunately I missed the livestream cause i had to go to work, but I watched it from archive and I do have some questions, that I would have liked to ask.

1. How rare will the landable HMC and Metal-Rich planets be in 2.0? Will there also be planets tinted in all colors? (Blue for copper ions or raw Cobalt, Green for Vanadium or Nickel Ions, Pink-purple for Manganeese, Red for Chromium ions etc.)

2. On my journeys, I have seen a lot of planets that have 0.00 Earth Atmospheres, yet are not classified as "NO ATMOSPHERE". How will those planets be handled? Will they be landable?

3. What about the lava planets. Quite a few of those have no atmosphere. Will we be able to land on them? If so, is it gonna be dangerous?

4 In connection with previous question, will temperature on the planets be a concern? Driving around on a planet that has surface temp of 4000 Kelvin would be no picknick I imagine.

Thanks

Absolutely fantastic. Really fascinating to get an insight into how its being done. Thanks Ed for letting the experts talk about what they do. Thanks for the explanation of why caves are not in, hopefully down the line in Season X, they might appear because i think the game play opportunities from them are fascinating. Looking forward now to the gameplay.

My thanks to all involved.

Incredible work all at FDev - it looks amazing, and the sense of scale is (already) amazing!

I expect space to get a whole lot emptier (of CMDRs) in December, as we'll all be zooming around in our buggies, seeing who can do the most amazingly longest low-gravity crater-jumps - it should be amazing fun!

Have I said 'amazing' often enough yet...?

Admit it guys, you use some stock footage from Nasa didn't you?

Only joking but some of the videos really did look like they could have come straight from a Nasa/ESA probe they are that good.

I downloaded the video. The images of planets are awesome

That was fantastic! Gaming history is being made here! I have other games I like, but they seem like silly toys compared to this.

I'd like to hear more about the material system. So the Stellar Forge determines whether a planet is rocky, sandy, or metallic, etc., right? Where does the Stellar Forge stop and planet generation take over? Is it correct to say that the Stellar Forge generates all the hard science data, and the planet generation part is more artist-controlled/aesthetic?

I hope they come up with some way of bookmarking places (and even planets) that we find, in case we ever want to revisit them. There are only so many Sidewinders we can park around the galaxy.. ;)

It'll be funny to see how planetoids like Pluto are modelled. As we know more and more about them, I'm not sure Frontier would be able to get away with just doing a PG planet, but if they're hand-crafted will that require pretty much an entirely new approach?

Just watched the YouTube replay on my living room telly.

Stream was awesome (small technical issues aside) and really interesting hearing the guys talk about the thinking behind it. More of this please Frontier :)

The shape iis generated from height information. That can be stored inside a texture and a texture can be easily manipulated. I see no problem in custom planets inside this system.

I just had to watch the recording of the stream after coming home late tonight. (Gonna feel real tired tomorrow ;-)
To me the credible real scale galaxy is one of the most important features of ED. And as it seems, this will get better by several magnitudes with 2.0.
You guys are doing an amazing job, really!
I also love following the development process and presentations like the one tonight. So keep on showing off what you are working on, please!
I think it would have been cool to see stuff like that when the Lifetime Expansion Pass was still available, but - hey - I bought it anyway... :-D
