Elite Dangerous is amazing in VR

I was in love with this game in standard mode since the moment I got the hang of it..always wanted to play it in vr so it’s even more immersive but didn’t really want to shell out the thousands for a rift or vive.
This is probably old news to most but I just found out for a measley 12 bucks the cost of the Ivry app and 20 dollars for a vrbox headset that fits my iPhone I can play all my steam Games in vr and as long as I play in direct wired mode ...Not over the wifi ...it’s every bit as smooth and good as a rift or oculus! Head tracking is awesome, dropped the idea of getting a track ir as my 30 dollar setup does it all...
have tried all of the different steam vr apps that I have dcs world ..combat air patrol ..a bunch of them but by far elite is still my favourite ..you truly feel like you are in space! Things that were starting to bore me like mining are fun again and I don’t feel as impatient to get done as just doing anything is so cool and fun in vr Mode..
so yeah anyone out there that has not tried it as they don’t have a rift or oculus vive or whatever ...just buy the ivry app get a vrbox for your phone , you won’t regret it ..totally awesome and makes the game a whole new experience ...combat is awesome being able to look where your target goes, so much easier to stay behind them ...it just rocks and makes the game so much more immersive and fun, anything that was getting old becomes a new experience! Finally decided to make that trek to Sag A as I bet it will be an unreal experience looking at that massive black hole in vr. You look like a damn cyborg with a big thing on your face and wires hanging off ya, my family keeps laughing at me as they walk by ...but it’s so much damned fun!
a quick question for experienced vr players ..working the system and galaxy map are a bit of a challenge not having your mouse, is there some trick to this? That’s the one thing I am struggling with in vr mode...

The problem with the galaxy map is it's completely designed for a 2D plain navigated by the mouse, so it's one of the main interface components that fails somewhat in VR where it is rendered in 3D and your mouse cursor no longer makes sense with the entire "depth" of a galaxy underneath it and no constant surface if that makes sense.

The trick, I believe is key-bindings as much as possible. This might be helpful

I'm tempted to give this a try but it's there a minimum spec for pc for this to run OK and is it lower than the game's standard VR requirements?

zeewolf thanks for that link it’s a big help!

ydiss I’m not sure of the answer to this as I have A very powerful gaming rig that can run any vr game So I did not look into that . I would assume that the computer is doing all the work and the smart phone is just receiving a video stream. So I am guessing you would need a co,outer that meets the minimum posted stats for vr for it to work. This is just a guess on my part though ...the devs Of the ivry app we’re very helpful on their support forums On steam. Maybe trying posting this question there and see if they can give you some advice on what kind of computer stats you would neeed for it to work.

I have been playing for a few years now in VR, and it is truly incredible. Not long after I started in VR I changed my Welcome spiel to this;

"My rule 2 is; Have Fun (it is just a game, but WHAT a GAME!). Rule 2a is; In VR have LOTS more fun!!!"

While there are drawbacks in the Game (Galaxy Map if you don't have a decent HOTAS, and the Commodities Market (which appears flat while other Station Functions are curved), there is SO much more that is brilliant in VR. Go out into the Black a way, travel well away from the Primary Star, switch to external view and look around.

The good thing is it doesn't cost much so probably still worth trying anyway. My pc is ancient. It runs the game fine because the GPU has been upgraded (still very old though, gtx 670, so not nearly VR ready).

I guess it comes down to that. It's not a VR machine. I'm massively overdue a new pc (cpu is the Q6600 :D served me very well but it's almost 15 years old now). So I'm going to do that at some point.

So have you gone the extra mile to get full '6 degrees of freedom' (tracker on the headset etc)? I see that the app supports that. Or is it just using the phone’s rotations?

(As someone who moved from Google cardboard to Rift, the 6dof is one of the major game changers ;). If you’re enjoying phone VR think you’d appreciate that stuff down the line ;))

I use a shift key to turn my throttle into zoom in/out, and move the cursor with a hat joystick on the same. (The same shift key turns that hat into an up strafe and a down strafe for the camera when needed). With camera tilts and pans on the main joystick it becomes pretty painless to use. (Just need to get used lining up the cursor with the disc representing the target system - at the bottom of the 'stem' etc)

Erm... easy 😄

PS if you now find yourself annoyed that Odyssey won’t support VR at launch, do drop by my 'experimental branch' thread, and give it a head-nod if it appeals maybe ;)

I just use mouse & keyboard without much hassle tbh.

WASD to move the map around, with R & D as up/down and left-click hold to just free rotate the map.
I just tilt it a bit, move the map around until it's over the target system, then the context menu pops up. Click the button for plot route and away we go.

If I wanna search or use the menus, I just click on em.

Make sure your mouse is set to In Game Panel based cursor.

No probs.

System maps a bit slow, but just zoom it out with mousehwheel, WASD to move it around as usual, zoom back in, click, go :)

I'm lucky I have a x56. If you look at system map galaxy map and external cams mode as flight! You bind accordingly. Just fly in those maps. Mini stick zooms in and out.
Flight stick for forward back left right. Pinky button for clicking stuff. Wotever u do... hotas an VR pwns

Ive tried google cardboard and riftcat/vridge.
Both were meh, i guess because of phone itself - samsung galaxy a40 (6" amoled)
OP, which one u use? If to change phone what should i look at?

Hi everyone ...thank you all so much for all of the hints tips and advice how to navigate within the maps in vr!

Golgot : I’m not sure how to answer your question on the 6 dpof ....I am very new to this so not sure if I’m going off of just phone rotation or six degrees of freedom..
the vrbox headset has a panel that slides over to allow your phones camera to see dunno if this has something to do with it or that’s just for ar games..
when I’m in vr it feels like I am sitting in a cockpit, I can look all around me as if I was really there ..there does not seem to be a limitation if that’s what you are asking? If I turn around 360 it’s as if I’m doing a 360 in real life .....so it does not seem to be locked to the phones rotation only? Do you mean the movement of the accelerometers in the phone? If so I would say it’s definately not locked to such a small range ...I can look all around Myself in game I don’t really see how there could be more freedom in how much you can look around..
it took a little messing around with the settings to get here though ...initially I only saw through a circle in the middle of the screen which was still cool but had no peripheral vision ...five minutes of messing with the settings and I had full screen ...
I will definately check out your experimental branch and give it a thumbs up!

VR and Galaxy map is if you get a joystick and pedals or pad with multiple buttons.
Left and Right mapped to joystick roll
Forward abd backward mapped to joystick pitch
Pitch mapped to some buttons (hardly use them)
Zoom in and out to a couple of buttons / bumpers or dpad
Yaw mapped to pedals (again hardly use them)

You will get quite good at it.

I wouldn't run it on anything less than a GTX 1080. I used to run it on a 1070, and the performance wasn't great. Lots of large dips in framerate.

Heya, the easiest way to check is to lean forward / back, and see whether your head moves within the scene IE whether your view gets closer to the cockpit / instruments etc, or whether it stays at the same distance from them. (Or for a more extreme test, get up out of your seat and take a few steps around. If your view stays stuck in the seated pilot position, it's not tracking your relative position etc)

If they've managed to use the phone's camera to detect depth / position that would be pretty sweet :)

(Thanks for checking out the proposal. Only give it that thumbs up if you're cool with the idea, but appreciate you looking in! :))

There is no other game I play that elicits the " OMG " from people I demo my VR rig too quite like ED.

I run an Nvdia 2070 Super, on a sadly outdated I7 4820 ( OC'd to 3.9ghz ) w/32gigs and a few SATA SSDs. VR is the Samsung O+.

VR is the only way to fly.

That cpu is fine. Moore's Law pretty much died after Sandybridge. If you OC it a bit more, you still have life in it.
