Elite Dangerous is amazing in VR

The good thing is it doesn't cost much so probably still worth trying anyway. My pc is ancient. It runs the game fine because the GPU has been upgraded (still very old though, gtx 670, so not nearly VR ready).

I guess it comes down to that. It's not a VR machine. I'm massively overdue a new pc (cpu is the Q6600 :D served me very well but it's almost 15 years old now). So I'm going to do that at some point.
If you have a decent CPU cooler you might try overclocking. 3.4 to 4Ghz is archivable. For VR stable framerate is mandatory. The 670 might also do it (with some OC) with minimum details and reduced resolution. It won't look nice, but might suffice for testing purposes.

I wouldn't run it on anything less than a GTX 1080. I used to run it on a 1070, and the performance wasn't great. Lots of large dips in framerate.
Actually ED runs fine on a 1070/ 980Ti/ Vega 56, but with reduced details (of course) and not too much supersampling (depending on the headset). More GPU power is better obviously. ;-)

Thanks to everyone’s advice on how to set things up navigating the galaxy and system maps is easy now. Thanks to all for the help!

You are right the phone car does not have the six degrees of freedom! I did the tests you mentioned you do not get closer or further away from things but stay sitting as you are in the cockpit if you move forwards or backwards. I can see where this would be neat. But if you are on a budget and don’t have the funds to buy a vr rig the phone with a headset is a great option. It doesn’t do all that a proper vr rig can do it seems but I still find it a massive upgrade over pancake mode and made the game fresh and much more enjoyable for me. Although I do find playing long stretches in vr a bit more tiring on the eyes than pancake mode.

overall it’s awesome visually spectacular to do anything I just keep my playtime’s a little shorter than before.
On my way to sag A about half way there .. can’t wait to see taht monster in vr!

I had a funny experience yesterday landed at a geological site that had fumaroles with huge jets of steam pouring out on a low gravity planet. Decided to drive over one.. I knew it would shoot me up in my srv but damn it about blasted me into orbit lol I was only a few meters from the ship when I drove over it but it blasted me so high I couldn’t see the ship anymore and was not falling back but just floating there Like I think 30 plus kms above the planet lol. So I flipped the srv upside down and used the thrusters to start falling back to the planet as I fell down my ship nearly crashed into me on its way to orbit .. I went so high it auto dismissed ...was kind of crazy fun .: of course I picked up so much speed falling back to the planet even thrusting as much as I could away from the ground ... amazingly the srv survived at just under 20 percent. What a fun crazy as hell 3 d adventure lol

Don't knock older pc, I still use one for my other cmdr. I can fly them together sometimes.
I have a VR kit for the 'big' computer, but OPs solutions sounds promising for a much cheaper solution.
And yes VR looks great and plays great once you have the functions mapped to your controller.

I started my elite VR adventure with a gtx 670. (Rift DK2) it was perfectly playable.
Not sure how it will translate to a set up such as above but put everything on minimum and you may have a chance.
Don't judge VR on it however IF it's awful.
