Elite Dangerous Issue Report - 05/10/2021

I would like to know please where this issue sits in the list https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/12357

It is an issue about illegal goods attracting a -25% penalty when selling them on the Black Market. This has been an issue since December 2018, and renders Smuggling completely impractical as an activity.

Arf said on stream recently that you look at the top 60 issues. Aside from the fact that some of the issues that are in the top 20 list are not bugs, and one of them is against ToS, it shows the fundamental flaws of the issue tracker. However number 20 only has 68 votes. This issue was created over a year ago, as the previous one was manually expired and it must have a reasonable amount of votes by now. Obviously those of us who it is important to have failed to brigade the tracker enough to artificially vote it up the list, but it is something that makes one of the official professions in the game unplayable.
I can tell you ('cos I just happened to spot it at the bottom of page 4) that it's currently number 40 on the list.

Link the issue - how many votes does it have?
No idea. And why should I have to link it here? The issue tracker is ridiculous in the way it functions.

And there's a dupe: https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/43395

Another of my pet peeve bugs (admittedly not a super important one, but it happens ALL the time) didn't get enough entries and is expired now.

I say again, I hate this system. It doesn't work well at all.

You can, but it’s similarly chaotic to issuestracker itself. Log in, use my issues, then choose Voted and scroll down through shown reports to find ones with your vote. Then click on issue where is mark for your vote, it will remove your vote and can be used elsewhere. I better not try express my honest view on how well this functionality works …

Wow ... well I never knew that. I may have to go and reallocate a couple of my votes now.

Just wanted to add that this worked a treat. I've removed a vote from a relatively minor issue that was way down the list and instead voted for something I care more about that's currently in the top 30. Perhaps that's what's needed here - a bit of tactical voting? Don't bother voting for things already in the top 10 - FD are already looking at these. If you have votes for things that aren't even in the top 50 maybe consider transferring those votes to something in the top 30 and then, once that's made it to the top 10 and been dealt with, go back and put those votes back on their original issue?

It's so scuffed that we have to even do this.. I just want to log in and play my game. This is their job. But they'll NEVER get it working on their own it seems. It angers me that they are relying on their customers in this way.

I'm amazed that "Expose telemetry data for motion simulators" is such a popular request. I'm not complaining, I'm just wondering if this means that hundreds of people have motion simulators (chairs on gimbals?) or if only a dozen people are placing requests / issuing bug reports. Which is it?
Yeh this one surprises me when the PS5 crashing issue seems to be well down the hit parade. Maybe nobody does play on console anymore. 🙃

If you know a sufficiently large group of people (68 plus, say :)) , that would be the way to go - if they can be convinced to spare a few minutes of their time of course.

Having been maintaining a list of Odyssey VR bugs for a few months I'd like to say getting folk to all vote on one issue to get it on The List is easy, but "herding cats" springs to mind 😅

So basically, anything that would need actual efforts and EXTENSIVE REWORK of the engine to fix won't be worked on at all for now… Sure, let's wait another 3 years to see if things improve and you can potentially start working on them… I'm beginning to think these spaghetti code rumors on Elite are true, but that's not a fatality!

Rework the engine. Rebuild it from scratch on a clean basis if needed. Merge all those modules we currently have (Ship, SRV, fighters, feet) into a single engine to get rid of fade to black and improve immersion. Sure, it will take years, manpower and money, but it is becoming more and more apparent that is is required now to further improve the game with ship interior, base building and such to try and reach that end vision we've been pitched during the Kickstarter and Frontier would regain lots of customers' confidence they slowly lost since 2018.

Don't be afraid to invest large sums of money into Elite! You guys at Frontier are doing wonders with your other IPs, you can do it to with Elite too and regain that best space sim crown!

Greetings Commanders!

It's time for the latest of our Issue Reports. Below you'll find the latest Top 20 table, based on your most voted issues in the Issue Tracker.

Note: the status and planned release of each issue is subject to change as various factors affect the ongoing development schedule.

Top 20 Issues

  1. Tiling Planetary Features - As before - would require a large overhaul so no short term plans.
  2. Automated accounts are used to influence BGS and Powerplay. - See our statement from 9 September.
  3. Anti Aliasing Not Working Correctly - Anti-aliasing improvements will come in Update 8 with additional ones planned for the future.
  4. Exiting the Game just hangs need to force terminate - Still under investigation.
  5. Joystick buttons 32+ not working - Still under investigation.
  6. Severe performance problems since Update 5 - The specific cause of frame rate drops following Update 5 has been identified and should be resolved in Update 8. Further performance work will be ongoing thereafter.
  7. Expose telemetry data for motion simulators - This is still being discussed internally.
  8. Dav's Hope not spawning materials - Appears to be fixed for Update 8 - confirming internally with our QA team.
  9. Supercruise Stuck at 0 - Still under investigation.
  10. Interdiction progress bars not visible - Appears to be fixed, currently planning deployment.
  11. NPC Fighter kills in Conflict Zones counting for the progression are a potential exploit. - Appears to be fixed in Update 8.
  12. Planets and Moons orbit lines not visible in the FSS when in VR - Under investigation.
  13. System and Galaxy map misalignment in widescreen aspect ratios (21:9) - Requires significant/fundamental changes. Nothing to announce.
  14. Missions and rewards not sharing with the team - Still being worked on.
  15. Thermal conduit too strong and wrong damage increase - Appears fixed for Update 8. Issue largely comes down to difficulty understanding how they work. Changes should allow players to see when it activates and how much it's activating by.
  16. Incorrect brightness/contrast adjustment depending on angle between camera ship and star - Some of these issues seem related to system limitations while others are genuine bugs. Will be worked on after performance/optimisation is improved.
  17. Discovered systems show validating - Appears related to the way we identify Xbox Gamer Tags - fix is still being worked on.
  18. Illumination of background planets is tied to illumination of player ship by the illuminating star - Similar to the above brightness/contrast issue: could be related to system limitations but otherwise may require further overhauls.
  19. Gamma balance is off which causes details in space to be lost - Seems related to balancing rather than gamma values. Will be investigated post performance improvements.
  20. Epic Games Store commanders having troubles with cAPI - Still under investigation.
As always, please remember this a reflection of the current situation as we see it, and the planned release for these fixes is subject to change.

Fly safe Commanders,

Thanks as always Zac! Looking forward to more info on the gamma issue. Really glad you've acknowledged it at last.

This is at the moment the biggest issue for me, apart from inconsistent performance. It makes the game just look bad regardless of the setting, it's either too bright or too dark, seems to be no balance.

Week beginning 18th October for U8. With all the usual provisos of course.

Wow, those are tight windows between updates. No wonder how these bugs keep popping up again.

Let's hope for the best for U8 though. I really want to see if that issue with button limitation gets fixed. I've got some bad vibes about it by the last supercruise news.

So can everybody please go and vote on this issue about the Black Markets? https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/12357

Remember to log in with any alt accounts you may have and vote with those too please :)

Normally I would, but I’m afraid I’ve got all mine used up on VR issues. Good luck though 😁🤞

(On the alt account thing - I wish I’d grabbed ten freebie Epic accounts; I could’ve solved the VR bug reports Expiration issue by myself)

Even watching the stream, it is sufficienty vague to not answer much. The 3 issues in the "Top 20" are shelved for "after optimisation" but no indication if the "focus on lighting" was still part of the plan. See what you can make from the words ;)
So I've listened to the relevant section of the stream in the meantime, and yeah things seem to have changed a fair bit from prior dev update suggestions - they even pointed out that the same team who works on performance optimisation also works on lighting, so contrary to my armchair developer knowledge it is not possible to address both (quite major imo) issues concurrently. That is a genuine bummer - and makes me wonder how many staff they actually still have assigned to Elite.

Combined with the softening up of wording in terms of what performance improvements we can expect, and when, I've very little expectations now for patch 8, although the writing was on the wall already anyways so not a massive surprise. The mutually exclusive fixing of lighting and performance is a genuine surprise for me though, and since they said that it basically won't really happen until after performance optimisation, this could drag on for another half a year... a patience of gold is a must then, unless they just hope that everyone just gets used to the new "style" and forgets about it.

Very disappointing from start to finish, I have to say.

There were a few other questionable remarks inbetween the many non-answers (FC pricing too low in Bruce's opinion, FC jump waiting times to not allow players to travel too fast - I thought the timer was for technical reasons???) that made me scratch my head further but I'm not going to dwell on it. At this stage I'm going through a "it's not me, it's you" phase here!
