Elite Dangerous no longer an MMO?

Until few days before release, the description "massive multiplayer online adventure" was being used on the elite dangerous main website.

They have now changed that.

Doesn't bother me personally, but that's what it said.

So tired of this assumption that MMO must conform to some kind of standard. MMO is an acroym in the same way RPG is a Roleplaying Game. So if a Roleplaying Game exists that doesn't have Elves or doesn't have magic are people going to stamp their feet? No.

Its Multiplayer, Its Massive and its Online. What is it you are are expecting? World of Warcraft? Eve Online? Each game has its own unique set of features and functionality. Don't come here expecting WOW in space. Thats not how MMO should be interpreted.

They did use the term Massively Multiplayer Online but I have never seen Frontier use the acronym MMO. What else do you expect them to describe it as?

Provide evidence, then. I never saw any official advertising calling this game an MMO.

Search the forums. This was debated to death during Beta. Evidence is in that thread. Happy hunting :)

Not bothered one way or the other except for the fact that people have selective memories.

Hey guys, you should read this post :)

Obviously, when a game has next to no social tools, is heavily instanced, and has options for group and solo play, it's not much of a MMO anymore. I feel like Diablo 2 was more of a MMO than ED.

And yes, it was defined as such on many occasions. For some reason, the word "massive" is nowhere to be seen on the official website, but until not too long ago, it was there: https://web.archive.org/web/20140819232955/http://www.elitedangerous.com/about/
Head for the stars, take a ship and trade, bounty-hunt, pirate or assassinate your way across the galaxy in this massively multiplayer online space adventure
Oh well, that exact sentence can still be read on the store page anyway: https://store.elitedangerous.com/eur/

Sorry if you didn't read MMO anywhere, I did on several occasions. Try a google search. :) I'll just wait for a mod response I suppose.

Sigh, I am aware that words have meanings, I mean, soup the can lamp shade up pencil hockey, you know? Nonsense is nonsense.

Braben et al referred to it as an MMO incessantly. It isn't so it's good they are stopping. I guess they are stopping so they don't have to worry about implementing any MMO or social features. ED is largely a single player game with an always on internet copy protection. And if you like you can shoot at each other.

While I'm an easily satisfied 84 type I would like some idea what we can expect positively in the future. So far the 'development' process seems quite the opposite.

My somewhat jaded guess is what we have now is basically it in terms of features.

It is a shame those mentions have disappeared yes.

Fortunately I captured most of them in a thread I originated just before Christmas with regards to the Squadron mechanics:

- "Elite: Dangerous lets you team up in multiplayer, with friends..."
- "Elite: Dangerous is the spectacular new online multiplayer space epic that allows you to experience the 400 billion star systems of the Milky Way galaxy."
- "... an epic multiplayer experience with you at the centre of the action."
- "...Whether you want to trade for profit between systems, take part in multiplayer co-op mission alliances, free-for-all group battles and team raids..."

All the above quotes were taken from the previous versions of the main game page or the store descriptions. MMO per se was never mentioned, but it was not really necessary given the above quotes.

EDIT: Ah no, my bad, the multiplayer online mention is still there in the store page: https://store.elitedangerous.com/eur/
Elite: Dangerous is the spectacular new sequel in the Elite series of games. Head for the stars, take a ship and trade, bounty-hunt, pirate or assassinate your way across the galaxy in this massively multiplayer online space adventure.

People think in terms of genres. Imagine if you liked Dubstep music, and say... Metallica advertised themselves as Dubstep. You'd be little upset, wouldn't you?

MMO has come to mean more than just it's de-acronymed self. Many of us have been playing MMOs since the UO days, and the genre has come to mean a lot of things - big and little. ED does not meet the definition, but like I said - it doesn't matter as I feel it was never billed as one.

If they took out the mmo part thats false advertising.

You are cofusing the generic MMO, i.e. massive, multiplayer, online with MMORPG like WoW or LotrO which has guilds / crafting / raids / levelling / endgame etc., etc. E:D was never advertised in those terms.

Kudos plus rep to StayFrosty for finding the quote I was too lazy to.

I imagine Vendraen et al will be back shortly to admit their error.

Christ almighty, it was plastered across their store page and used a number of times. This 'proof or never happened' line is so childish. Sure, we're all lying to you just to win an internet thread....

Aaaaaanyway. Great to see that this is the first significant act FD take in determining the game's future after their Xmas break. Well played guys.

Already shifting the goalposts I see :)
Elite advertised itself as an MMO. By nature that would make it an MMOFPS. Other MMOFPS games include Planetside 2 and WW2OL. They feature fights including hundreds of players at the same time in a seamless world (well, WW2OL's playerbase is probably now too small for that, PS2 is still doing well though).
Unfortunately, Elite is currently as much an MMO as Battlefield is.

"Buy our game it's got single player mode" ~ OK :)

"Sorry single player mode isn't available now, you can have the online version instead." ~ Hmmm :(

I think of the gme as more of an 'MO', without that extra M.
It's a Multiplayer Online game. There's nothing Massively Multiplayer about a 32 player instance in my opinion ;)
But I guess it's not quite so clear as that though as we do all share the same galaxy and influence it's outcome.

You're arguing semantics here. Using the term "massively multiplayer online" is a weasely way to make people think you're calling your game an MMO when it's really not, with the ability to later say you didn't call it one.

I have been following this game since it was announced and I never once thought it would be an MMO, because the avoidance of using the exact term "MMO" was a clue to me.

I agree, though, that there was some deception used....

They definitely had the word "Mulitplayer" on their website, but now that is even gone!

You have to go to the online store page now to see it mentioned in a small blurb. I mean it's probably smart, mulitplayer is so bugged right now, I just hope they don't try to charge us for wings like it's a "new" expansion.
Multiplayer:And the best part - you can do all this online with your friends, or other "Elite" pilots like yourself, or even alone. The choice is yours...

The game was sold as an MMO and technically it is an MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online).

The marketing as an MMO has been removed because people keep coming up with the 'baggage' of what they think an MMO should be based on what they've played before.

"I want a ship with passive buffs!" "I want a crafting system" "I want special loot!" "I want to create an empire to take over the galaxy is" "This game doesn't have this feature I think defines MMO therefore false advertising".

I think everyone here got bored of these sorts of thread from people who thought they should be able to order the game to be as they feel it should (bear in mind there were soe sensible suggestion and feedback threads among the bile) so they removed it from the advertising.

The intentions and plans for the game have not changed though.
