Elite Dangerous no longer an MMO?

They definitely had the word "Mulitplayer" on their website, but now that is even gone!

It has multiplayer features. Not the same as saying "this game is an MMO" (with that exact wording). Problem is, that's all a very weasely way to make people think certain things about your game, without making the exact claim... which leads to threads like this.

You're arguing semantics here. Using the term "massively multiplayer online" is a weasely way to make people think you're calling your game an MMO when it's really not, with the ability to later say you didn't call it one.

I have been following this game since it was announced and I never once thought it would be an MMO, because the avoidance of using the exact term "MMO" was a clue to me.

I agree, though, that there was some deception used....

No, you are arguing semantics by claiming that mmo doesn't mean massively multiplayer online... Good grief. As for claiming that the 'avoidance of using the exact term "MMO" was a clue', well, the exact term was used... you seem to be somewhat confused.

MMO...

Massively... yes, there are thousands of players playing in the one online universe.

Multiplayer... yes, it is multiplayer, just not how many think it should be.

Online... yes.

So, is it an MMO? Yes, but most people define an MMO as something different.

Christ almighty, it was plastered across their store page and used a number of times. This 'proof or never happened' line is so childish. Sure, we're all lying to you just to win an internet thread....

Aaaaaanyway. Great to see that this is the first significant act FD take in determining the game's future after their Xmas break. Well played guys.

Indeed:

It was advertised as a "massively online". That usually means seeing more than 2 players every 10 hours. Dissappointed at the weaseling out (not much by FD, but by the over-apologizing community).

The game was sold as an MMO and technically it is an MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online).

The marketing as an MMO has been removed because people keep coming up with the 'baggage' of what they think an MMO should be based on what they've played before.

"I want a ship with passive buffs!" "I want a crafting system" "I want special loot!" "I want to create an empire to take over the galaxy is" "This game doesn't have this feature I think defines MMO therefore false advertising".

I think everyone here got bored of these sorts of thread from people who thought they should be able to order the game to be as they feel it should (bear in mind there were soe sensible suggestion and feedback threads among the bile) so they removed it from the advertising.

The intentions and plans for the game have not changed though.

Isn't Elite P2P when you're interacting with other real people?

Good to know your hotline to the devs is active and well ;)

If you think this will make the slightest bit of difference as far as people asking for multiplayer content and mechanics you are bonkers. All it means is a few sad old cases on these forums will be able to croak on about how Elite 'isn't really a multiplayer game' with a little more misguided conviction.

Not sure that you can accurately explain this away as semantics. If I saw the words British Broadcasting Corporation written down I think it would be safe to equate this to BBC.

If I see massively multiplayer online written down it isn't a matter of semantics if this is equated to an MMO.

Being that this is what both acronyms stand for.

It was advertised as a "massively online". That means usually means seeing more than 2 players every 10 hours. Dissappointed at the weaseling out (not much by FD, but by the apologizing community).

It is still advertised as an MMO today:

https://store.elitedangerous.com/eur/

The Official Elite: Dangerous Online Store

Elite: Dangerous is the spectacular new sequel in the Elite series of games. Head for the stars, take a ship and trade, bounty-hunt, pirate or assassinate your way across the galaxy in this massively multiplayer online space adventure.

It's an awe inspiring, beautiful, vast place; with 400 billion star systems, planets, moons and asteroid fields just waiting to be explored and exploited.

Trade: Buy low, cross dangerous space lanes, evade or destroy pirates en route, then sell high, if you make the journey!

Fight: Take on the pirates or be one yourself.

Progress: Get your pilot rating all the way from "Harmless" to "Elite".

Explore: Head out to the far reaches of space and discover amazing sights.

Multiplayer: Do all this online with your friends, other "Elite" pilots, or even alone.

And you will never see more than 32ppl in one place... so not MMO (or Massively Multiplayer Online to satisfy those of us overly concerned with semantics)

OK, we have all been tricked. I'm from the solo group - they robed me of the simple singleplayer Elite on my hard disk - but offered me a compromise I'm willing to take. Single mod is exactly what I've expected, the only downside is the need for constant internet connection. I can live with that. But still wish I can have a normal pause in the game.

You MMO guys got more. IT IS A MMO!!! You just need to learn how to group yourselves in the Universe.

Massively Mutliplayer online game was on their store page in several places.
People trying to make it never said that are wrong. It did. Not debate, please stop saying it didn't

MMO stands for Massively Mutliplayer online
That's what it means.

MMORPG is not the same as MMO (it has 6 characters for a start)

ED was never advertised an an MMORPG, that is correct. It was advertised as an MMO.

Them removing it from the store page after the game was advertised and sold as such isn't such a big thing as long as FD doesn't do what some people here are trying to do and make out it never said that (when it flipping did).

Yes, I am. I'm pointing out they very carefully used certain words that made some people think they were claiming the game would be an MMO in the traditional sense. They never said "MMO." They said "massively multiplayer online," that's not the same thing - and was probably very carefully chosen for a reason.

I'm on your side; I agree there was deception.

I'm trying to point out how to spot weasel-wording so that you don't get fooled again.

Unless those players are in the same game, same server/instance its not massive multiplayer, its separate people playing the same game. Separating the words into individual meanings doesn't change that.

Vendraen - Watching you try to argue that others are using weasel words when you are arguing MMO does not equal Massively Multiplayer Online is quite something...
