To anyone claiming the dropping of VR decision was commercial, I’d ask them to consider this...

half life Alyx created an entirely new user base with MANY new VR sets being purchased specifically to play that game. All those people have finished it now and are looking for the next AAA title. That could’ve / should’ve been THIS game!

We may still be a minority, but we are no longer a tiny minority!

I had exactly this thought some time back. How can VR be a dying niche when there is a 2-3 month waiting period to get the Valve Index due to it constantly selling out? And that’s one of the more expensive headsets on the market ...

Plus, in the article I linked above Dbobe considered 10 percent of people participating in the alpha using oculus DK2 an high number.

True reason is technical inability. They are living off the legacy of the work done with the base game.

Actually, it is the first time in history that PCs could be hampering gaming progres... With slow multicore (>4) adaptation and inferior (yes, inferior) storage. Video is well worth watching, if only to see Linus squirm :D

Enjoyed that, looks like the PS5 will be the first console I will buy since the PlayStation 1 in 1997 and Xbox in 2004. Full PC upgrades have become mostly not needed, just graphics cards and expansion. I built a new core i5 system in 2013, and I still have it, just five things have changed on it in that time.

1. Addition of, and Bigger and bigger SSD drives for main drive and 2TB HDD for storage, both as they got cheaper per GB.
2. Paid Windows 7 to free Windows 10
3. Ram from 8GB to 16GB
4. Graphics cards various upgrades from AMD HD 7950 through to Nvidia GTX1080Ti
5. CPU from original £250+ Core i5 , to 2nd hand old top end Core i7 , £100 off ebay in 2019, OC @ a rock steady 4.2Ghz. And this was only to cure a stuttering issue with RDR2 I had never had in any other game.

The only issue i have with Consoles, and will have also with the PS5, is self repairability. If it breaks often they only solution for consoles is to junk them and buy another. I my PC breaks, i can diagnose through swapping parts what is wrong and order a new part, problem fixed, even the main SSD backs up daily to and old 700GB HDD @ 3am , so if that fails i can restore it to a new SSD.

Hopefully they will have SSD storage back up externally to PC hardware on the PS5 as a minimum to tempt PC gamers. That and i can use a KBM with it, i suck at Dpads.

That only leaves online gaming. having not owbed any modern consoles and gaming on PC, i have never ever paid for online gaming, via a monthly subscription service. And that is the only barrier left to tempt me away from PC Gaming. Really not sure if i can Stomach £50 pcm (ish, whatever it is) to Game online.

It's an outrage though, I have been playing all Half-Life titles FPS since HL1 in what, 1998? Where is the non VR HL Aylex version for me to play on my 144FPS 2k monitor? I'm so enraged i'm finished with Newell and Valve forever. I'm going to stamp my feet like an upset child until I get what I want.

Lol. See what is did there?

HLA is a stand alone title made purely for VR it's not an expansion. It never supported monitor.
ELite Dangerous was a game released only partly finished with the view that.features would be expanded on going forward and was released as BOTH a VR and a none VR title.

A closer and fairer analogy would be what if ED odyssey was VR only? How would you feel about Vr players laughing at you for losing access. But hey I get it. Your ok so why not laugh at everyone else.
I get it VR users are a minority.

Am sure in life there is something which you do and enjoy where you are a minority . Maybe everyone will laugh at you if ever that gets stopped.
Wheel users in Dirt Rally are a minority
HOTAS users in most flight games are a minority.
Console gamers without paid substriptions are a minority
Motorbike riders on our roads are a minority

Back to ED. Players who PvP are a minority
But people who play in Open are a majority

So by that yardstick ED should be PvE but locked to Open only. I could live with that btw quite happily . The amount of time FD must spend thinking about PvP and getting it working propey but it IS only a minority of players interested. This was confirmed by FD so let's use the same logic. Screw all PvP players, screw all solo players. ED:O could be Open Only PvE
Whilst I could live with the above I would feel really bad for some players if it happened because I get some people have huge interest in PvP. I get that some people have NO interest in seeing other players or only seeing players they know

You just described what was happening on Alyx boards pretty much everywhere.

Also, a flawed analogy because VR is the way forward, not backward. It's new tech, not old tech, and Alyx can't work in old tech, because the tech is not up to par with 3d motion tracked space.

Btw. during the course of all the meetings I've been in, it often turned out that analogies are not that productive after all, because people tend to jump to pick on an analogy instead of focusing on a real hard problem at hand.

? Not sure what you mean.

Are you are aware that HL: Alyx is not a DLC of HL2 ? To explain it more - this means that if you play HL: Alyx you are not using the HL2 game, and its not going to load the base game, you don't play the same character, etc..

I mean, it seems obvious to all of us, but from your statement it seems you didn't know. And if you didn't know, I can absolutely understand your frustration.

Basically all that Frontier said was "no VR at launch because it'd be crap."

But if you like, they could delay Odyssy further just so VR is in at launch. That will surely be seen as a rational and welcome decision by the player base..

The difference being one is a stand alone game and one is an expansion to an existing game.
