Don't get me wrong, I think star citizen will be amazing, but...

Hmm... theatres of war? Will that launching finished before or after squadron 42, and in turn will they be coming before or after main game? And will any of them actually launch (not alpha or beta or early access but full product launched) launch before the sun sheds its skin an turns to a white dwarf in a few billion years?

I backed star citizen in 2014, and I'm still waiting on Squadron 42 which was meant to be a filler before the main game dropped in 2018.
Star Citizen is the most fun I have ever had in gaming, without actually playing it.

Trying to be level headed about the VR disappointment... I suppose I wouldn't mind if the Oddysey thing is just some other aspect of the game that is not necessary, a bit of a bolt-on sort of thing) then I guess I can just carry on doing what I'm doing maybe in Elite possibly. But if it starts giving some advantage in the game otherwise then there's no way I'm investing anymore time in the game.

In fact even if it is a completely separate thing I don't know... I can't see it not being integrated into the main game enough for me to be happy with it.

I have a feeling Star Citizen will be far from amazing unless they do something about the gameplay. Watching videos of gameplay in SC there is a lot of admiring the scenery (and sure it looks gorgeous) or riding the train from the city to the star port and saying wow isn’t this cool (sure it is the first few times, but after the first 50?). Is there any engaging gameplay there? Any puzzles to solve, or mysteries to learn about? Any long term goals to aim for that can’t be got by going to the store and buying a heap of UEC to get that badass gun and killer ship? Without anything to strive for the game will be empty and soulless.

I want it so much, but I know it's going to be a long time ... I think it would be a good idea to create a main quest, maybe with a bit of history. it will take longer to wait but I think that is a good reason to wait.

Yeah! My glasses cost £700, most of which was the lenses. I don’t want to spend another £600 on lenses just to use a £600 VR headset.

Different head sets have different amount of space internally. I wear glasses in an HP Reverb. They fit without risking scratching the lenses and I can game into double digit hours with no discomfort. Having said that, there isn't room in there for much thicker lenses (the thickness of my reading glasses would have been a no-no). You really need to find people in your area with headsets that are willing to help you find something compatible.

You can find me in-game (for now... :/), or on discord with this same name if you'd like to talk.

Hope you find a solution that works! o7

Ok so the Vive Cosmos has manual IPD adjustment. Looked at the Pro, but it is over £1,100! Just need to find somewhere local that can demo it and is open!
The HP Reverb has new version coming out this year. It will have manual IPD, flip front, 2k res per eye, Valve optics and audio. It's expected to be in the 600 range. Worth looking at. I have the current Reverb and love it!

I am really interested in the G2. 2 things (well 3 now ED is ditching vr players) concern me

1) the tracking
Windows MR devices the tracking is not up to snuff imo. Not for controllers anyway. Hopefully 2 more cameras will fix that but it didn't work for the cosmos (by all accounts I ain't used it). So far only oculus have come close to acceptable inside out tracking that can almost replace outside in.

2) the oculus software . ReVive helps for sure but you still lose out on ASW 2.0

1 - Yup, tracking upgrade would be good - hopefully they have nailed it?! I play mosted seated SIM, so not a deal breaker for me - will wait to read the reviews....

2 - ... ... yup ;)

If it IS all they are hyping it to be, they will shift a lot of units - high res, better tracking, manual IPD and flip front is a lot of goodness for a reasonable price

The shareholders and accountants have seen the money Star Citizen is raking in and think they can do the same. Hence, space legs before atmospheric planets.

shareholders can't dictate what FD have to do for the simple reason they are a minority.

Yes! Try-before-you-buy is always highly recommended with VR headsets, if one have the opportunity; There are just so many matters of comfort, that make what fits one person's head perfectly, quite possibly useless for another.

One of the weaknesses of current headsets is that whilst you get stereoscopic depth, everything you see is at a fixed focal distance, but that weakness has come with a silver lining to a tiny portion of users with certain eye conditions, who have been able to play without glasses (not likely you, I'm afraid).

Most recent HMDs have that fixed focal length at somewhere around 1-2 metres, which is chosen for that range's encompassing the volume where you'll likely be interacting with things, and thus matching up decently with stuff you look at a lot; If one can see clearly at that range, one do not need glasses in those headsets; But the early Oculus prototypes (and Playstation VR, I believe) had their virtual focal plane at infinity, which would have been better suited to a long-sighted person.

Hope your experience turns out pleasant, if you get around to it.

You get special lenses for the headsets that negate the need to wear your normal glasses inside the headset, and they are much less than prescription normal glasses.

Obviously I don't know your eye prescription, but even optioning the lenses up to the max for the HTC Vive Cosmos they ere $127 bollars on one site, and £86 on another site, and thats optioned up lenses with the blue light guard coating and all that jazz. I'll post the links immediately below this for you to have a look at:
https://vroptician.com/ - the UK one with prices in £ sterling
https://vr-lens-lab.com/ - the US one with prices in $ American Doll-hairs
But just googling "VR Prescription Lenses" brings up lots of vendors, those two I mentioned above were simply the first two results in my google search.

@Dooguk gave you a good explanation on what IPD is, but I'd like to add to that by explaining why it is important for a VR setup. Essentially if you don't match the IP of the headset to your own IPD, your eyes won't be in the sweetspot and you will see visual distortions because the lenses are in the wrong place for your eyes. The best analogy I can come up with to explain this to you would be asking you to think of trying to look at an older LCD screen from an acute angle, you know when you are in the right place that the picture is going to be crisp and vibrant, but from an angle outside its sweetspot (designed viewing angle range) all the colours get messed up. In VR something similar happens, if but its not the colours that get messed up, its the focus, so from the wrong IPD setting you'd see really strong blurring / distortion which would detract from the experience. Worse than just ruining the visual acuity, its also not good for your eyes, as you will subconsciously be trying to compensate for the lack of focus and end up with eyestrain/headache or subconsciously move your eyes inwards and to see the lenses correctly and end up cross-eyed. Like if you focus on your finger at two feet from your nose, and keep your eyes focused on the fingertip as you move it all the way to your nose.

I don't think that's the best plan, showing support for them through purchasing stuff from the store when you are in opposition to their stated policy of dropping is the exact opposite of "voting with your wallet" and is shooting yourself and all the other VR campaigners in the foot. As for the hardship you are willing to endure to overindulge beyond practicality, or to put it another way; the compromises you are going to endure to finance your purchase of arx, its not worth it, with or without VR.

But if you insist on pursuing that plan, might I suggest you buy hoodies and sweatshirts from the merchandise side of the store to keep you warm instead of arx for paintjobs?
You're right of course. You can tell I'm in a mess... I have no idea how to break this flat downwards spin. New sleep... new plan.

And proud ;)
I've been known to run a 1080 res version of this as my desktop...

I might give SC another try this weekend 🤔
