ANNOUNCEMENT Elite Dangerous: Odyssey | The Road to Odyssey - Mission Playthrough

The visuals and details are superb, and I'm glad to see some footage instead of simple pictures. Still, it was a pre-recorded clip montage and not a continuous play session, which is what will sell me or (or not) the expansion.

I agree with the sentiment that AI and body animations were poor and while they've stated many times it's an older build, why didn't they show the newer one then? This is a marketing video after all, one would expect to see the newest there is to offer, am I wrong?

The roleplaying was kinda cool, well done CMDRs. If you read this, how did the combat actually feel? From an outsider perspective the pew-pew looked old-school and somewhat clunky, which is by no means a bad thing. I'm not a fan of the insanely fast-paced gameplay of many recent FPS games.

just caught up with the live stream, towards the end @Bruce G switched cameras and shows a poster in the background with animals and plants?
he has a habit of revealing things, am i reading too much into that??

Have to see how it plays .. for players of all skill levels.

Looking like tier 1 NPC's in this demo, you can check out my join date, there have been times since release when ship NPC's were buffed all the way up but it's not necessarily as fun as it sounds if the avergae player can't get out the door.

Just because NPC's aren't boss level every time doesn't mean they couldn't be but - given some tweaking at introduction - they will end up pitched at a median level for reasons of accessibility. Hardcore will still be PvP.
There's a bit of a leap between 'hardcore' and the AI guards just standing around being bullet spongey, while the Goliath shots do essentially nothing. It is true though, as someone else pointed out ITT, that the community team (bless 'em) don't tend to make space combat look very thrilling either. Last time I tuned in I think someone lost a Mamba to an NPC Viper somehow after a very stilted and ugly fight so, yeah. Maybe it's that. Hopefully it's that.

Also re. the join date thing I was just being deliberately snarky as a schtick, I have been playing since 2016 and didn't join the forums for a couple of years - it doesn't mean anything either way and I apologise to pr1sm, it was a cheap shot and uncalled for.

The guy taking hits from the goliath was also the one with the armoured suit on I think? Pre-alpha build, Rank 1 NPC's, it'll change over time too. I'm more concerned about numbers. Even if AI do fight like rank infantry men you'll still be in duck and cover mode when there's 50 of 'em! Have to see how it goes but clever AI is not beyond the devs capabilities, they'll be looking at where to pitch it (x 50).

edit: Much as I like his reporting I think Obsidian Ant can have a lot to answer for sometimes. "Concerns over AI" are not quite gospel at this point but in fact very first, first impressions from an even more third person - if not to say reddit - point of view. What's it like when YOU come under fire (x 50) is the real question.

Am I the only one who begins hating to see Threads/Anncouncements where instead of an embedded Youtube Video only a blank space is shown?
...and in order to see what Video File is linked one has to Quote it and grab this (lrLjC47iwlY) from the Quote, which then needs to be manually fed into Youtube.

I really wish someone could fix that, the Video linking/embedding broke a few months ago.

I think you have to log out. Log back in and accept all cookies. That is what fixed it for me.

Yes. I am aware of that. Ok. Let me try this way.

Where in OPEN or PG a couple of mates could do a mission, in SOLO would I be assigned an NPC team mate? If not, is that mission, in fact, available in SOLO?
Of course you could do it solo, but you wont have an npc 'wingman', that was confirmed as not coming in one of the Q&As.

Since they said the mission could be done entirely stealth, maybe in solo it will need a little more thought and tactics?

Right. Thank you, I have missed that, hence my ill informed question.

Hm, I categorically deny all non-essential Cookies like most sensible users likely do.
Forum and Embeds still have to work without issues, as others manage to do exactly this just fine (?)

I think most of the concerns about AI are caused by the over dramatisation of the community guys' chatter. They're obviously trying to add a touch of drama and a theme to it but it was out of kilter with the action. Big example, they play it out like a stealth infiltration but you can see that's not actually happening. My guess is they're clean so they can freely walk about without consequence unless they attack.

I like it that they got away with a couple quiet kills.

Then it all goes busy but they're really hamming up the risk. Seems to me their opponents were low rank. The radio chatter urgency was overplayed. They never were at risk but they obviously wanted to go for the cinematic feel.

I'd hope that the AI would ramp up to the point that the rather simple extraction plan they employed would result in getting pummeled. I'd also be much less worried if the issue all comes down to uh... Not professional levels of direction and production values, than just bad AI.

We'll know for sure in less than a month.

It looks OK. A touch bullet spongy (though they rarely stayed on target after dropping shields so who knows?) and still not enough to know for sure yet. I'm thinking just playing the mission out with dev commentary might have been better.

As always: we'll see how it is when we get out hands on it. And I can already give you five names of people who will say it is the worst thing ever, and five people who will tell you it is the best thing ever. :ROFLMAO: What I want to know is to what extend there even is a 'cover' system in place, and if the AI uses it...
I hope I'm in the latter group ;)
I too can guess at the names of the 5 "worst ever" posters...

Will be interesting to see how other weapon types behave.
They did show ballistics in use:

And the reason why the PEGI rating has to go up is perfectly visible too.

Right? Trafficking illegal goods, trading slaves, mass murdering pirates and people are all OK concepts for "teens", but if blood is shown then it's a no-go. A nipple??? The rating would be 18+ :ROFLMAO:

In order for the Alpha to be released to pre-order customers, that particular build would have branched off from the main development build some time ago, to allow it to be "tidied up" for public use.

you mean that's the actual alpha release build? you really believe this? oh wait ...

That means that what pre-order customers will get their hands on is likely to be quite far behind where the team actually are in development now, and perhaps also behind what we saw in the video.

... well played. this way you can continue in denial when reports of the actual alpha hit 🤭

now seriously, i specifically asked for explanations, not imaginative excuses. it is indeed possible that frontier's integration build is quite old. that's what you would use for high level or e2e testing and demos or such. they for sure have clearly no notion of continuous integration and automation is presumably lacking so i can totally believe that such an environment be a couple of months behind or even more.

now, specially if there is visually significant change in the results, would it make sense to use such outdated work for a promo, shortly before release? bizarrely, in frontier's development world it totally would. they have a history of astonishing flops. this could even be something done entirely from the motivation of the community managers, it is also obvious that frontier doesn't make their job particularly easy by giving them good value support material.

well, we will see shortly, anyway. i would be surprised if you saw something very different in 3 weeks, but ... keep your hopes high up! (y)

If they had made the blood green there would have not been any issue...

Dunno where you are from, but in the UK the game is PEGI 7 - so red blood pushes it to a teen rating... Got any more unhappiness I can help you with?

Why don't you watch the full livestream and listen out for what they said about it being an old build. shrug And where they said that exact settlement isn't even the same in the latest build, it's in a different location.

Unless you think they are lying? Which would be a take, I suppose.

now seriously, i specifically asked for explanations,
Why ask a bunch of forumites to give an explanation?
Never mind, I'll livestream the Odyssey alpha on the day of release, then you can make a more informed supposition on the alpha, if you don't die of boredom first, of course, as I tend to just play around and not do anything worthwhile in game anyway...
