Elite Dangerous: Odyssey | The Road To Odyssey Part 1 - One Giant Leap

Greetings Commanders,

Make sure you are parked at the nearest Fleet Carrier or station and pour yourself some Lavian Brandy in your favourite Hutton Mug. It is time for the first Elite Dangerous: Odyssey dev diary - One Giant Leap!

We are more excited than the Far God Cult being scanned by a Thargoid to bring you the first devdiary on our road to Odyssey, check it out here:

The first in a series of Elite Dangerous: Odyssey dev diaries One Giant Leap explores how commanders can experience light atmospheres and break new ground with exploration on foot for the first time.

Stay tuned for future episodes set to dive-in to combat, missions, environments and co-operative play over the coming months.

Tonight, we will be streaming a Discovery Scanner episode at 18:00 (UTC) on the Elite Dangerous Official Twitch Channel, to take a deeper look into the dev diary with CEO David Braben, and Senior Designer Derin Halil.

That was beautiful. One giant leap indeed. Great work team!

:D S

Got to admit I felt a bit underwhelmed tonight. I was hoping for a bit more from the stream - I know it is early days but Commanders have asked for walking around ships and stations not a slower two legged version of the SRV! Yes the planets look brilliant but I remember being promised that at Lavecon a couple of years ago so that is not news.
I think FDev have missed a great opportunity to really hype it up tonight. Sorry just my opinion

Polygon article mentions that there will not be any walking inside ships.

"Developers are also considering allowing them to walk around inside starships, exploring the vessels they’ve owned for years for the first time. The feature won’t be available at launch when Elite Dangerous: Odyssey comes to PlayStation 4, Windows PC, and Xbox One sometime in early 2021."

Many thanks to the team. Great to see a return of the diaries. Some nice additional footage and concept art. So much more to reveal - has me positively salivating for the next dev diaries.

Really looking forward to being able to explore new planets. Interestingly, while you again confirmed we'll be able to visit light (tenuous) atmospheres, I don't believe you've yet stated we WON'T be able to land on more complex planets like ammonia worlds, water worlds and earthlikes. This really has my curiousity - will we not be able to land on these as many others believe (due the complexity and having not been explicitly mentioned either way), or are you keeping some surprises close to your chest in true FDEV fashion?
They like to keep the science real. Your mm thick remlock suit wouldn't be able to deal with very hostile environments so ammonia worlds are probably not going to happen. WW could have tenuous atmospheres so possibly but EL would by definition have a denser atmosphere so maybe not.

Good to see the revamped ice planets will finally be implemented!

The vid was shorter than I expected and showed less than I hoped, but I'm honestly pleasantly surprised how many times exploration was mentioned. Hopefully the FSS gets improved to be more fun to use as well.

Looking forward to learning more about Odyssey over the next half year.
It's only the first video in a series, they can't reveal all the good stuff in the first video alone. :)

Just saw the Dev Diary video, and a lot of the video is about walking around on planets, which is cool and all...but personally, I'd much rather walk around stations or my own ships! I'd be much more eager to throw money at something that lets me tour my Cobra or (future) Corvette.

By the way, I'll be looking forward to the 5 days that all the new additions are still mysterious, before the community has unveiled literally everything new that Odyssey has to offer.

I'm really holding my breath on this one. Too often now I've given FD the benefit of the doubt and far too often I've been let down.
DD1 basically told us what we already knew and could be gleaned from info about Odyssey that was already public. I'm REALLY hoping there's more to this, but the basics seems to be just this. Future dev diary titles are about stuff you can do with this new tech, but are far as BIG CONTENT CHANGES go, it's basically this.

Walking on planets.
Barren planets that don't have black skies.
Planetary Tech that was originally promised from beyond.

No non-barren planets.
Vegetation probably all the same and spread out in various sites like now (our galaxy has a wierd uniform biome it seems).
No walking in spaceships or space stations, that'd be too hard.

I hope future dev diaries prove me wrong, but I doubt it. I did expect more from this other than the leaked content so far, but...

We'll see.

There you are then, "don't listen to the community" is sage advice .. and probably the secret to a happy life!

I think the thing about walking around stations is fair enough but set models are going to be a walk in the park compared to generating both the stage and the actors. It's as well to get used to the idea I think that ED has never put the cart before the horse and there's a definite computational strategy behind the ordering of the world building. Backdrop v game is always a bit of a dance.

Well at least someone's getting the answers to the questions.
