I would love my son to be able to get ED for his Xbox but was wondering - does it require that Xbox Gold rip off subscription to be able to play it? Because at the moment all of his games are offline and he cant afford an online subscription, plus as he's only 8 I am not sure I want him going online. Obviously the PC version doesnt work offline so I guess it does require Gold but I know nothing about the Xbox version.

Afaik you do need the Gold subscription if you want to play Open or PG. For Solo you don't.
Others please correct me if I'm wrong. ;)

Microsoft takes money for enabling MP in a 3rd party product that has MP right away? I don't get it. What is their reason for charging money for that?

I didn't knew that too until some time ago. The more serious question is "why do people support this nonsense?". No hate against console players, but I just don't get it

It hadn't even dawned on me that gold wouldn't be needed for solo play. This is good to know.

It's quite normal. Elite lets you play Solo when silver, and other games let you play the leaderboards. Forza comes to mind.

Hey thats great he will be really pleased as hes been wanting to get it for ages.

Good to hear, and smart parenting on you. At eight he's far too young for the dog-eat-dog world that is Open. Or any multiplayer experience, really.

Solo is fine though. :)

It would certainly stop me ever getting a console - why pay for twice for getting a console online when its a single broadband payment for PC? Really stupid marketing. I didnt know this when I bought my son his Xbox, I wont be buying another console after this, he will get a PC or laptop if he wants to continue gaming in his later years. Its bad enough that consoles (and therefore their games) have a limited shelf life of a few years without having to pay to get online as well. Rubbish it is.

if I pay for internet access + games to play. I don't and wouldn't pay to play the game. just one reason why a console is not what id invest in. the other PC's are much better.

console gamers = cash cows.
