Elite Dangerous should still be in Beta (like most big games with 4 years of development)

To keep (some) of the nit-pickers happy, I've removed the S.C. references from the image...

Still waiting to find out what is wrong :)

I'd like to know where you get that strange idea from. FDev still have to do quite a lot of hand-crafted assets, as far as space games go. Or do you think all those ships, weapons, effects, space stations, outposts, planetary bases, SRV(s), crashed ships/probes, loot, etc just make themselves? And those procedurally-generated planets still need a lot of work from artists, to make them look right. Same for those procedurally-generated faces that are coming in 2.1.

That is ummm exactly the point I was trying to make in my first post....

I know some folks who work for Blizzard ;)

The amount of assets required by ED is small by comparison to the games listed. Also building a level or map is far from a simple task, ask anyone at Dice.

As for it being a strange idea, I am a project manager for a software house and have a very good understanding of the time frames required and work that goes into making games, next you'll ask which one and sadly that I cannot answer for two reasons 1. forums rules and 2. Contract. If you wish to doubt me then that's fine.

They wanted to ship the game for the 30th anniversary and now it's here.
There are many issues but I hope the devs will keep adding content and fill the game.

To me it feels like Elite Dangerous has been in development since 1984, ever since then I have never forgotten how much I enjoyed the original Elite game.
And now that it's finally here I too am loving every bid of it, although there are some parts I will not use (Power play & Arena) and some parts I would like to see added (Gun turrets South East and West) it can only get better in the future.

Over 6 weeks of play time and still counting. This journey has just begun, both for me and (hopefully :)) for FD :)
Fly safe or dangerously...

Elite : Dangerous is definitely not using the "normal" development model. They are trying something new, mostly because they thought they could not get the funding required for a long-term development cycle and still maintain control. Not everyone agrees with or even understands the method they are using. The game is not smashing any records but it has shown some success, at least so far. Can it continue for the length of the mythical ten year path? That remains to be seen.

FD literally got 1/1000th of the money SC got. It's not like waiting around in beta with no money is going to develop the game.

What does it matter what the game version is called? If ED vanilla was called "pre-alpha" and horizons was called "beta" would FD have more money? Probably not, and money is the limiting factor of game development. So why does it matter what its called?

I'm glad they did.. I have nearly 2000 hrs in this "under developed" game.. and still enjoying every minute :)

I am glad they did too, but the OP'ers point of view I think is important that most games are not released before things are really ready to avoid the countless misperceptions that occur about the game, the devs capabilities and their vision and on and on. It would be a true shame if potentially loyal long term players were to reach a conclusion about this game and its designers in such a way as to not only leave but to spread info based on not being aware of what the main point the OP is sharing.

I know I am guilty of that, for i typically do not research a game's history and all that stuff, i assume its ready to fly (pun intended) when they ask for non backer funds.

I might be a bit off, but it seems to me then we are ALL backers. The fact that us non backers entered the scene thinking it was ready and realize it really isnt, yet remain steadfast regardless how many of us have expressed frustration, anger or rage, means if anything we are MORE of a backer than those that paid for backer status at the beginning but knew they what they were getting into.

I like a bit of different gamedeveloping. We have a say in wats bad and good. They try to change things we dont like.

If they did it the normal way, you have to like it or not. They whould not change years developing when the game got out. If they had a big budget.

Now we can get a game that we help to build. And I could not do that in old elite.

The first Elite was alfa. Where 30 years in developing an idea. Thats a lot of thinking there to take in. All work that we see here have been unpaid work during that 30 years. Of ideas and frameworks thats not been considered.
What we pay for are the work on those ideas. And they have a 10 year plan. They must have much good stuff in storage.

Im loving to see what to come.

I'm glad they released when they did - I just hope that they have the balls to stick with their overall plan. A danger is that they have to fudge certain aspects until parts are developed which could then prove very difficult to go back on (from a political perspective).

I understand what you are saying, and agree with much it. It is very clear that many players that try ED do not know the design premise. And it is clear that for some reason that knowledge hasn't been conveyed very well to the gaming community and potential players.

However, I think that some of that problem stems from threads like this.

And it took 5 to 8 years of development before those games were actually released. From that perspective it's not surprising Elite Dangerous still feels a bit empty & under-developed. It's just a shame that Frontier had to release Elite Dangerous before it was really ready...

The OP doesn't seem to understand the premise, and conveys the idea that ED shouldn't have been released. Many casual forum readers will see the topic, look at the first few posts, and draw misinformed conclusions from that. Then they tell their gaming friends what they saw on the forums, and the rumor mill starts grinding out exactly what we see now.

I will say that FD did not help themselves by postponing 2.1, but I stay informed about the game so I agree with the decision. Others do not, and they have friends.[sad]

The price. They're charging full AAA pricing for what is basically still early access.

Well. All is free to wait 10 years and then buy the finish game. If people want to give money to make the game and have fun doing it, thats there privilidge.
I have bought many games that I not have played many hours on. I have gone to cinema and shows that last an evening. And all I have is the memories. That cost money. Im happy to invest in this.

I buy some paintjobs every now and then, becouse I think I get a great value from this game. And I like to give some money for my pleasure. If you think its to expensive, dont buy more and you dont lose more.

I have bought whiskeys that cost more than this game. And I am not a rich man. I have not a 100 pounds left after food and rent and living. And I dont have money to go out and eat or spend on hobbies. I live a simple life. My hobbies are my dog, my computer and my mind. And I spend time with them al.

Thinking is still relatively free and simple. If you aint got any money you still can entertain yourself by thinking.
