Elite Dangerous | System Colonisation Beta Details & Feedback

So, PSA and feedback for FD (as likely seen in other threads).... the installations are all flavours of messed up. For example:
I built this Relay station:

Which you can see here in this shot... is actually a comms installation

... which means I don't satisfy the pre-req for a Security Station, like I was planning.

Gonna be pretty frustrating playing guesswork to find out which is which.

woes! I was just about to start doing some installations

I had funny situation yesterday. My usual routine on take off from planetary landing site is to use boost asap when no structure is blocking path ahead of my ship. I have not even managed to press boost key after slightly moving cursor therefore breaking autodocking computer lift off procedure and got finned immediately for blocking landing pad (keep in mind what You usually get 1st is a warning). Now usual thing to get rid off it is to pay it on the same station on next visit but this time no contact for such action was available (since it is construction site). I had to look for larger station with the same faction in nearby systems to find one which graciously offered me privilege to pay it.
I bet someone from the construction crew got annoyed for me not delivering those materials fast enough and decided to play around with legal stuff to "encourage" me to work harder...
Edit: It is still possible to deliver materials with anonymous access but usually other land able stations in the system are under the same faction which means no access to things Your own system produces until fine is paid.
I had the same pad warning and given anonymous access and it let me unload, but when I returned with another load the settlement would not approve landing.

The worst part is... I'm finding info on what the right facility might be... but now I'm stuck.

I wanted a comms facility, but not for this one. So... is this a bug and I'm going to get my installation changed to a relay... in which case I shouldn't build the correct one which is also a relay... or worse, am I going to end up with two comms facilities?

Urgh... think i might just hang foul til info comes out about this...

In this particular case, I only have 5 orbital build slots in the system, which I wanted to do a specific thing with... so there's no room for error here.

The station needs seven whole days to be completed, or is it enough to just go past Thursday? I ask because I finished building the station on Saturday and it is still in the deployment phase

All my facilites have been completed the day-of for me. But others have other experiences.

this is indeed a boulder in the spacelane. I'll hold off aswell for now. Hopefully a cunning person at FDev will check this out

That's a pretty niche system you got there. no room for error whatsoever:unsure:

Excluding core minerals for a moment... you can find good stock levels/prices using two pieces of information:
1. The indicative prices via the market info e.g here:
View attachment 419889
(This is production, so higher prices = lower stock)
2. Population of the system.

Reason you need these two bits of information is because:
  • Lower price == Higher Stock
  • Supply/demand values are proportional to the population.

So a low pop system will have low supply prices at, for example, 1-5t and high supply prices at 50-75t... meanwhile a high pop system will have low supply prices for 1-150t, while a high supply pricing will be for 800-1000t[1]

Sure, you need to find out these things, but once you work that out, it's hard to unsee these things.

What helps in a major way is the galaxy pop slider. Want to find high-pop refineries for sourcing Insulating Membranes?
This is a shot of all refinery economies in (an area):

Here's what I call "high" population refinery systems (10m+) using the filter... exactly the same shot.
You then apply the High Tech and Industrial filters to rule out hybrid economies, and then that'll show you Pure refinery economies
Looking at these 4 systems quickly in Inara (to prove the point more than anything)

Here's the rub. When you don't know any better, is it much easier to use Inara? Yes.
But this sort of thing is now pretty much second nature for me, and it's quick... but most importantly, it's reliable and accurate.
This description feels long because I'm doing it step-by-step... but when you just intuitively know to do these things, it's very fast, and most importantly, live.

I didn't "pre-scope" these systems with Inara, I simply used the ingame tools like the above and then used Inara to save running out to each of these. You'll note some of the really old data will basically be fine, it means these aren't popular and are therefore your best source.

An orbis needs 1200 membranes? There's more than enough up in that result set. Maybe you need to do six runs in a python to an outpost rather than two in a T9... but it's 100% better than waiting for 2 hours getting ones and two's from market respawns.

Again... this looks lengthy to explain step by step... but when you know this is how to do it in your head, it's quick. I do this all the time.

EDIT: And to circle this back around; if you go to one of these systems and dock somewhere that isn't good for stock, use the indicative pricing to find where else it's stocked in that system and head to the cheapest place (== highest stock)

[1] these are just exemplar, to explain things
I'm already aware of all these things (though useful for others who might not be) but thanks for confirming I'm not overlooking something.

Am still dabbling in Legacy from time to time, and particularly for selling off mined goods I have to rely on the in-game tools. It works more often than not, but I also come across weird discrepancies quite often - say, I'm docked and (by luck) come across a market in the commodities screen that buys Monazite for say 400k per ton. I travel to the station in question, and the price is suddenly 350k. This is for say having 30t of stock in my cargo so would think bulk tax doesn't apply at those low numbers... maybe it does but the game doesn't even tell me this concept exists let alone whether it applies and to what extent. All the while it tells me a neighbouring station buys it for 400k.

Add to that the inability to see market prices of systems that you visited but are further away. What's the max, 40LY? What about markets on the other side of the bubble? Do they not count? Or FCs muddying the waters with their inaccurate and/or out of date trading data, as well as docking permission restrictions in some cases. There's just so many relatively simple things they could improve the UI on, but I guess there's always Inara so why bother.🤷‍♂️

Games like X4 have spoiled me - do certain things in-game and it will happily provide me with the buy/sell prices, and even clearly list % multipliers based on faction standing, demand/supply levels and such. And X4's economy is far more complex (and realistic) than Elite's.

I'm aware of all that. Only after I started hauling did I realise my system belongs to a 475 member player faction lol. I thought empty systems are well, empty. Anyhow, I'm chumming up with the lone Anarchy faction at my asteroid and going to stir things up a bit. I wonder when they will notice something is up. Lol again.
I'm finding myself in this situation also. Managed to unwittingly expand an already huge player group even further (I'm not a fan of huge groups taking over the bubble but don't normally have any skin in the BGS game beyond that). Due to the low population messing with the BGS in "my" system should keep me visiting it for a while - been struggling to find systems I feel 'close' to in the past so at least from that perspective Colonisation offers an excuse to run some missions and keep busy. But have zero interest in adding a second system to my Colonisation belt. Too much hauling grind for my taste.

Some actual feedback - last night it finally dawned on me what the yellow/green icons mean (one is Tier 2, the other Tier 3 - ........right?).

This is the kinda intentional obfuscation I really dislike about the game. How am I supposed to know what those represent? Codex doesn't explain it, there's no text next to them either. I know we're in a so-called "beta" but come on, this is basic stuff.

I feel a deja-vu...
