News Elite Dangerous: The Commanders (2.3) beta

I hope that glorious le "Commanders" means much more than simple avatar creator and multi crew. It should be focused on players, QoL, friend managements etc.

Commander creator sounds like fun, only thing I'm curious about is to what purpose you can create an avatar, multicrew okay, what else?

I'm hoping it'll mean that if I stand up in VR and turn to look at the chair, there'll finally be a head on that body....

<Shudders>

I think we don't have a head so that you don't see bits of it popping into your view when you look around. I expect we'll continue to be headless but we'll see crew mates heads.

Fingers crossed our head orientation is transmitted so that other players can see where we're looking. It would add a lot to the experience.

Does anyone think that 2.3 will add the ability to walk around the bridge?? Everyone keeps complaining about how immersion breaking it would be to have some guy just pop up out of nowhere near you. What if you could walk to your seat or to the bridge? 2.4 could add space station interiors and our ships in their entirety. The way I see it, season 2 is laying down the ground work for things that they want to expand on in season 3. If 2.3 won't have space legs, then 2.4 most certainly will allow us to walk around.

In games like the famous 'Silent Hunter' series, you have the option of physically moving around the submarine, but you tend to just use the teleporting hot-keys, because it's lot a lot more convenient.

I don't see what walking around the bridge would really add, except for justifiable calls from users to give it more of an actual purpose.

Have you ever played "Pulsar Lost Colony"? If not, you should give it a go. It's both a good game in its own right, and a glimpse into what Elite could work towards.

No to both, as FD repeatedly stated.

Thanksfully... and please... No!

We've also have two years of other ground work put down for half baked mechanics... Let's go and build on those before giving us WASD walking...

They've suggested this won't be the case, but I'd not be surprised either way. Im not familiar with bigger ships layout, but is there an issue with other players not being able to see much due to seat positioning?

I think multicrew without space legs on bridge only will be really stupid ;/. Instead of walking to seat, you will teleport with some mambo jambo neural link...

Not sure if anyone has suggested this but imagine adding a media player!?. As long as we supply the files ourselves it shouldn't cause any copyright issues for FD as it is out of their control what we decide to play with it. I currently use voice attack, a VR headset and Winamp. Voice attack controls Winamp nicely with the hotkeys but that is not a "shareable" experience.

For total immersion nothing could beat a media player that all on-board can hear and control, that would be amazing!!.

Please FD, please at least consider implementing this.

MP3 is not patent free in US until 31 December 2017, so Frontier can not add media player without additional costs. Maybe after that date, but not before.

Psssst! It's a game...

Let me guess, you'll want to walk to your fighter and SRV next? And after the fifth time you've done it, got bored of it, you'll ask for there to be an immediate jump option?

Not exactly. I can press "E" on the exit for bridge and select "Go to SRV" or "Go to SLF". I know this is game, but some thing are really stupid and non immersive :(.

So you want a poop meter slowly increasing and the ability to bind a key to poop? ie: Hold "P" to poop?

Surely realism/immersion isn't always the way to a better gameplay experience surely?

If you have to spend 20-30 seconds just getting from A-->B in your ship, as interested as the experience might be for the first day, and then once you've shown a friend or two, after a week it would have surely get tiresome and just become a needless "loading screen" you have to WASD through?

Imagine situation when you and you friends pilot Anaconda. There is only two people on the bridge. You are the pilot and your friend switching roles between turrets and systems. How it will work? Teleportation? Or maybe his interface will change each time he change role? The worst case scenario is when you will leave pilot role and your friend will be new pilot. Will his seat on the side of cockpit will be used as pilot seat? Maybe he will teleport to central seat? There are so many questions... In some cases role switching by switching interface sounds good, but some others are really troublesome...

You should try Pulsar Lost Colony, or even Star Citizen and see what mean immersive bridge gameplay.

Surely spending 10 minutes flying from A-->B to deliver canisters of said poop would get tiresome too. Maybe we could just press a button to teleport our ship from station to station and not have to go through the bother of flying back and forth. ;)

A little facetious, but my point stands. Much of this game is incredibly repetitive; to reject moving about the cockpit/ship for that reason doesn't really make any sense. It will be as boring/incredibly-fun as they make it. It's not inherently a good or bad idea in and of itself.

Implementing simple Space Legs for bridge should be simple (in client-server architecture, I am not sure how messed up their p2p is). It would be so, so, so immersive... Only one acceptable solution for me without space legs is that, there is only one pilot and other player can switch roles by reloading user interface according to selected role; no neural link, no teleportation, no no no...
