Elite: Dangerous Trailer now with added honesty

I agree with both of you.

People do not seem to understand how marketing works.

Agree with all the above, however, that trailer appears to be aimed at the audience most likely ending up the most disappointed.

No idea how many people will buy the game based on this expecting an arcade third person space version of planetside 2.

Bracing for impact on the forums in 3...2...1...0...-1...-2...

Yes the trailer is a bit of an unrealistic representation of ED but then so are most of the FPS ads I have seen on television. It's an ad...
.
Up until the combat scenes I thought mmm fair comment but then it compared a supercruise flight to the combat in the trailer which seems to be deliberately giving another opposite false picture. At least compare it to a warzone or USS. I like a good side swipe criticism but this feels more attack than joke, especially with the 'hey join us on Reddit' which also seems to hint at come and slag off ED...At least to me...
.
This is more accurate...would have been a fairer comparison rather than supercruise

.

Why do you see it as an attack? We all like the game as much as you, but we can still take the mickey a little.

Also, why does "join us on reddit" equate to "lets slag off ED" ? Its nothing of the sort... the reddit has many passionate people on it too. Just happens to be the first place he posted it, alongside the original trailer.

Some people are taking this way too seriously. The majority of the comments have seen the humour.
We arent saying the trailer is bad. Sure some people are saying that outright, but not me for sure.. its a great trailer with cool music, but the gut reaction was "yeah this isnt what the actual game is like".

In fact, all of us (our group of mates) said that to each other before Jag had even made this video.

He saw that, and thought he could play on it.. Sure he exaggerated it, and it wont be to everybodies taste, but its stilly funny.

Fact is "real" gameplay would make for a pretty dull trailer in comparison... sure you could throw something fun together with more gameplay, but it wouldnt be anywhere near as thrilling as the CG one.

Doesnt mean its wrong to poke fun at the thing though. Its not an attack, its merely a brutal observation.

Like I said though, we (including Jag, the videos creator) all like/own/pre-ordered etc the game, so it comes from a good place.

Probably because I have read all the posts you have posted today (actually that is all of your posts) and they all seem very 'hey I am on your side' but actually do little other than put a negative spin on things and then turn other peoples comments to your advantage...just my personal feeling.
.
Anyway my comments were about the video you posted, and were my thoughts on it

Oh dear. This is exactly what I warned would happen in the other thread when I saw the trailer. I like ED - I think everyone here must to some degree - but that launch trailer was just asking for trouble.

I have to admit that I laughed a lot in the trailer. It's not really fair because they don't show any of the actual fighting in ED which is actually pretty good fun. But I'm not sure it would have made much difference if they did: it would still look very jarring next to the Launch Trailer. You'd see some slow rotating, a ship whiz past and be missed by your lasers and then a bit more of the same. The overall effect of the video would be the same.

Yeah, they don't seem to have done themselves any favours, to be honest they have produced some really nice vids just using ingame cameras. I was expecting a montage of that sort of stuff. It would probably have been more effective advertising with the shots being ingame even if they are from a 3rd person view.
.
They are not alone in this type of trailer/ad though, it is sort of expected practice and is within the ad laws which are very strict in the UK

To be fair, the trailer for The Phanton Menace was really misleading too...

HAHAHAHA, best comment so far.

Youre entitled to your opinion. All I can say is that this isnt the case. Ive replied to your comment on the other thread, should you actually want more information about my posts, but either way it doesn't really matter.

I know my intentions, and some people are bound to read something different into it, I cant help that.

I see nothing negative about asking for information or posting a video a friend made, but hey.

As to why my account is from today, why is that a problem? Does that make me any less worthy of making posts?

As of today I made this account specifically to post this video for my mate, which is fair enough if you ask me.

anyway, no harm done, people seem to enjoy the video, and I have the pricing info I wanted now.

Indeed - I still rank the Phantom Menace trailer was one of the best trailers to a film made. The format was copied to death too.

Anyway, amusing video, and seems fair to me.

Frontier DOES have a good product with potential for greatness, but clearly their marketing is lies. Sadly its the state of most game promotional videos these days.

Have you played Tie Fighter? Elite is a piece of cake compared to that. Tie Fighter at the beginning was like Dark Souls. :)

Tie Fighter was a fantastic game. It was hard - but it always felt fair.
I loved getting those tats.

Yes - it is amusing (chuckled a couple of times), but fair? Not really - I never tried to shoot anyone in the game so far, but even trying to take a photo of an imperial fighter by someone totally inept in flying spaceships is more engaging than the footage put into contrast with the trailer.

He's depicting a valid point, and doing that requires some contrast at times.

This game is so ridiculously easy and harmless, it's not even funny anymore.

That was an amusing response to the trailer: I would've maybe also shown off getting into a fight with a station, or a few other things, but it was enjoyable.

And speaking of the actual trailer...

The Good:
it's a well-animated, action-packed trailer with a nice flow

The Bad:
-it's misleading and not representative of the actual gameplay and 'feel' of the game
-the E3 Trailer is superior in every way except for showing outdated UI and graphics

The Ugly:
that music? Seriously?
Here, let me improve the trailer tenfold with the right song: http://www.youdubber.com/index.php?video=uLAGI-LdNyI&video_start=0&audio=rAkHGbRPNR4&audio_start=0

Yeah Elite is a neat start of a game so far but honestly, it seems FD's advertising division is headed by an adhd sixteen year old. The biggest gripes I've had with this game is obfuscation and being mislead. Otherwise little tedious and unimaginitive but still early.

I think that the point of the trailer is to condense as many features as possible into a seemless, fun and action packed video. Something which it succeeded in, especially if you care to notice the details such as the cargo scoop. Think of it as a feature showcase. I think that it is not even trying to depict how the usual, day to day gameplay looks like. One would think that this was apparent to everybody. In fact if it were the case, FDev could have released a gameplay trailer. Besides, all of these scenarios might come true when the game releases and story elements/ manual events are introduced.

edit: all it takes is a little critical thinking... I would have expected that from a mature audience.

The new trailer is CLEARLY a cinematic trailer... not a gameplay trailer. Everyone and their dog understands the difference. Just trying to build excitement like blizzard cinematic trailers, COD whatever. It never claims to be actual gameplay so there is no misrepresentation there.

OP's linked video however IS misleading however because it CLAIMS to be honest when it is not. You can make anything look bad by editing the worst parts out of context and putting it beside their claims, and that's exactly what this does. This is the same kind of dishonesty and deception as selective reporting or editing out of context to promote an agenda.

Shame on whoever made this. It might be a chuckle for those of us who have already played the game, or have watched a ton of videos on it, but for those causally browsing because they're interested in buying... Harm done indeed.

I concur.

And to be honest I've seen some pretty gnarly car commercials on TV lately. I bet people don't feel that something's been obfuscated by such... well... irrelevant adverts.

This is what I was PROMISED:

Funny video lmao.
Just a thought, maybe the new video from FD is game footage from the release build which only new players get and all us backers don't, quick let's start a thread filled with outraged posts 116 pages long ;)

yeah that's a little unfair, you're really not comparing like with like..

Show battling at a station and how quickly you die by the station.
Show battling in the resource extracting sites..

be a little more fair...in the comparison, I have had some epic battles in resource extraction zones, with multiple npcs and anaconda

However I do like the comic value in your video!! :D
