thank you !

thank you for this support, it totaly makes the difference between small 80's game, and something worth of this century

i havn't posted much, but for this announcement, i have too

again

thanks, now, i need to up the bar on my pc hardware next year :)

While its great that this will be implemented please don't forget the thousands of Track IR users who are waiting patiently for a similar announcement regarding TrackIR.

Writing this as the Blue Danube is playing on ClassicFM :D

Same here, I think Ashley did mention they are yet to announce what the plans for TrackIR are, but it seems they've been taking this seriously. Hopefully it will be a positive!

Il2:Battle of Stalingrad, Star Citizen and now Elite, yay! I wonder if Prepar3D 2.0 will support OR? Anyway I will wait for the consumer version, which may or not be available when Elite releases, of course trackir is already available.

We don't have anything to announce on TrackIR at the moment, but yes you will still be able to look around the cockpit if you do not own a head tracking peripheral.

In regards to question 2, I think the question might be a bit too vague. The intentions of the dev team is to give every area of the game the same level of treatment, so it isn't really a case of designing the game around head tracking- everything is developed to parallel. The team always intended to give players the ability to look around a 3D cockpit, so a device like the Oculus Rift already perfectly compliments the design choices that have been made- there shouldn't be any reason to compromise for implementation.

Please, please, do look into this. I don't think it will need that much time to implement TrackIR. Specially since 6dof will be supported anyway with OR.

I have been using TrackIR for years now and getting back to looking around with keys/buttons/mouse is simply no option anymore. I once had my TrackIR broken and in the time it took to replace it I simply stopped playing my flight sims altogether.

I have tested the Oculus Rift at Gamescon this year. Although it is a promising piece of kit, I don't find it very practical. Do I really want to have such a contraption attached to my head for hours on end? I'm already starting to hate my latest quality headset; I think I'll go back to a simple earphones for better comfort!

All for added features for the game that add genuine value. How much will one of these OR headsets set me back roughly given that they are still at early testing stages etc?

Looking forward to the mail saying a x-52 pro profile for E D has been put together and ready for download!

EDIT: I see that they are aiming for approx $300 / €220 / £188 according to their website at least:

Haha, Yes, I was wondering when Braden put down VR in a previous interview he had tried the Oculus Rift. Thankfully now he has and he seems impressed!

Great news.

So should I add Rift mode to EDDu (see sig)?

Oculus Rift is the biggest thing to happen to gaming and a game like Elite Dangerous is tailor made for it. Very excited about this news, best start saving my pennies cos I also need a decent PC lol

but as the human eye doesn't really differentiate on anything above 32.somethingorother FPS then tying to 60fps isn't an issue......

On the other hand, the human head can turn a lot faster than 32fps. Doing so at that refresh rate introduces all kinds of view artifacts in your vision.

Remember, it's not that you are updating a fixed viewport (with all the peripheral stabilizing factor) but that you are in effect turning in an environment that your senses interpret as "real".

I'd say that even 60fps is not enough, but it is at least acceptable.

The makers of the Oculus Rift have just released a gizmo or programme to help game developers iron out any latency in their game engines. Can't think of any games that run at more than 60fps and the Rift from what I've read is right on the money.

Great news, but I'll wait 'til the consumer version is out before chucking money at it (OR). Still not sure if I'll be able to use one without barfing (I can't read while travelling in a car) and how I'm going to get around not being able to touch type.

Damn it I now have to ask for an OR for Christmas, along with so many other things...

I dont know if Santas slay will be able to cope!

Regarding Latency AMD have released a new Graphics API called Mantle which works at a lower hardware level and massively reduces latency issues, with a 9 times boost to draw calls.

There will be a Battlefield 4 update that uses the new API. This could be something that FD should look into as it could improve ED's VR latency and graphics quality.

Given the speed this thread has moved at there is clearly a desire for this in the game. It will be very interesting to see how it shapes up and also to see how well the retail version of OR sells.

Rift support! Now I have to tack back the other direction

I for one was very excited about the Rift when I first read about it. I have purchased several of these devices. Mostly monitor related 3D with shutter glasses. I have not tried a rift yet, and I am still on the fence. My biggest problem with this kind of tech is the eye strain. Sure it looks fantastic for a while but you can't keep playing for long. Ghosting is also still a problem. I emailed Rift to see if they were going to include a mode without stereoscopic vision. It would be immersive enough to have a Rift without stereo that can do head tracking. I never got a reply. If anyone out there has a dev kit can you do that? If so I may be aboard still. Good thing I didn't spend the money I am saving for a rift on the off chance I still may want to get one.

Well I don't think Word would work very well! :) But seriously, it would work for any application that you can hook into the drivers I would imagine.

Using some third party tools you can get applications that were never designed for it work with fairly minimal effort, but the results you get are often less than desirable i.e. a third person title where you are very close to the back of the character.

In addition to the Oculus, I have Kickstarted (not single-handedly mind!) the Sixense Stem System. It's a 3D tracked set of motion controllers. With that you could completely do away with the keyboard entirely and it would even be possible to drive a virtual cockpit, pressing imaginary buttons and switches with imaginary hands. Okay, perhaps a little fiddly for this game but it works great for some if the YouTube videos are anything to go by.

Just wondered, is OR just suitable for games (ATM) or does it work for office applications too?

It is only really good for games.

There are a couple of programs out there that will project your windows desktop onto a virtual screen, but due to the low resolution of the dev kit; it is not currently much use.

I would recommend waiting for the higher resolution consumer version, due for release early next year (just in time for E: D) ;)

Got mine for £229 including shipping.

Oh sure, that's the Dev kit which you can only get from Occulus themselves. Once it gets released commercially, it'll be all exclusive distribution contracts and $1 = £1, and no international shipping.
