I feel your anguish!
I was doing fine last year till about November - swimming daily Mon-Fri got to the closst I've been to "buff" since the 80s.
Then a persistent cold cough stopped me - Christmas happened - and here we are in May maybe 2 stone heavier!
Hello everyone. Been a while.
Pretty much the similar for me. I was the fittest I had ever been about November then persistent cough and nasty flu-like virus of somekind
cut me right down.
I did run a 10k race while I was recovering from that - I wouldn't recommend that kind of thing - was coughing my lungs up for about 30 mins after and
really struggled.
Just as I got over that in Feb I went head-long into getting a big work project done where I was doing 18 hour days for 2 months. (Hence why I have not been around here)
Coming out the other side now - got my running back up to once a week and last weekend went sub 51 mins for 10k for the first time this year. I did finally manage to break 50 mins last year.
Psykokow - caveat: I am not a health professional or in any way medically trained, this is just my own experience
cut out fizzy drinks - period. Even 'zero' ones. They are just bad for you.
Set yourself achievable goals and give yourself a reward for achieving it. For me setting targets really focuses and get my ass out of the door.
(I did read something the other day about a running club that end up at a burger restaurant and they have a burger at the end - calories used equalled those in the burger. Not sure I would suggest that but interesting idea)
My target for last year was to run two half-marathons and break 50 minutes for 10k, which I did. Being out of action for such a long period I think I am going to to be happy if I can match that this year.
Maybe do a marathon next year (although that is a long long way!)
Go for a walk/jog tonight. 20 minutes minimum. Not sure about up there but glorious weather round here today.
Don't break any records - just get outside. It's the kick out of the door I needed initially and a friend did that for me (still haven't forgiven him)
Also, cook you own food. I think we have discussed this before - makes a huge difference.
Not only is it better for you but you are more concious about what you are putting into your body if you are making it yourself.
unconscious eating is a sure-fire way to put on weight. Really think about everything you consume.
I don't count calories, life is too short for that level of inspection for me but I do think about what I eat.
Also - you did it before, you have experience, you slipped, dust yourself and get back on the road.
Good luck.
