My situation won't change, its a long long road... its my mindset that can change.... that's my challenge..
Good luck and strenght to you, positive thinking and allocating only a preset time (like ½ hour every day) for worrying about things may help.

I feel your anguish!

I was doing fine last year till about November - swimming daily Mon-Fri got to the closst I've been to "buff" since the 80s.

Then a persistent cold cough stopped me - Christmas happened - and here we are in May maybe 2 stone heavier!

Hello everyone. Been a while.

Pretty much the similar for me. I was the fittest I had ever been about November then persistent cough and nasty flu-like virus of somekind
cut me right down.
I did run a 10k race while I was recovering from that - I wouldn't recommend that kind of thing - was coughing my lungs up for about 30 mins after and
really struggled.

Just as I got over that in Feb I went head-long into getting a big work project done where I was doing 18 hour days for 2 months. (Hence why I have not been around here)

Coming out the other side now - got my running back up to once a week and last weekend went sub 51 mins for 10k for the first time this year. I did finally manage to break 50 mins last year.

Psykokow - caveat: I am not a health professional or in any way medically trained, this is just my own experience

cut out fizzy drinks - period. Even 'zero' ones. They are just bad for you.

Set yourself achievable goals and give yourself a reward for achieving it. For me setting targets really focuses and get my ass out of the door.
(I did read something the other day about a running club that end up at a burger restaurant and they have a burger at the end - calories used equalled those in the burger. Not sure I would suggest that but interesting idea)
My target for last year was to run two half-marathons and break 50 minutes for 10k, which I did. Being out of action for such a long period I think I am going to to be happy if I can match that this year.
Maybe do a marathon next year (although that is a long long way!)

Go for a walk/jog tonight. 20 minutes minimum. Not sure about up there but glorious weather round here today.
Don't break any records - just get outside. It's the kick out of the door I needed initially and a friend did that for me (still haven't forgiven him)

Also, cook you own food. I think we have discussed this before - makes a huge difference.
Not only is it better for you but you are more concious about what you are putting into your body if you are making it yourself.
unconscious eating is a sure-fire way to put on weight. Really think about everything you consume.
I don't count calories, life is too short for that level of inspection for me but I do think about what I eat.

Also - you did it before, you have experience, you slipped, dust yourself and get back on the road.

Good luck.

OOH great Idea Maddogs, although I think you will end up a massive wobbly human sphere...

RIGHT its GAME ON Time, I've had enough of killing myself with food......... something has got to work.

I have got to change something...

I have a half-marathon next weekend in the New Forest. Training not been going that well but should be able to finish (hopefully).
My goals are :
1) Finish
2) Under 2 hours
3) Under 1:53:32 (PB)

I don't expect to beat my PB but it's good to have a target.

I seem to have accidentley agreed to do another one in a months time. Someone my wife knows has not run more than 5k and had signed up to the local half-marathon in about a months time. I half-jokingly said I would run round with her as she might need some support. It seems I was taken seriously. Oops. Hope my joints survive - there is a massive hill in that one.

Will report back with results.

Good to hear it 'kow. I got fed up of Garmin site being a load of tosh and signed up for Strava. It seems a lot better, would recommend it and you can update Garmin connect to automatically load runs to it.

well the New Forest Half Marathon went really well. It was a lovely route and the weather stayed fine. I did pretty much exactly what I expected - a bit under 1:58 which I am happy enough with.
Legs are fine too which is a bonus.

So now to the one next month .. I probably ought to.

Anyone else doing any races?

The best things you can do for yourself is to go find a local gym and start weight-lifting. It's the single biggest thing you can do to look better, as a man or woman. I was fat all my life, was at 100 kg at 5'9'', 16 years old when I decided I was fed up (no pun intended).

It's not going to be easy and it's not going to be quick. It's not a one time effort, but a commitment to a life-long lifestyle change. Don't be scared, it won't be easy but it WILL get easier.

The best advice I can give you: don't feel like you have to constantly weigh yourself and that every time you weigh yourself you have to be lighter than last time. Your weight will fluctuate, I would recommend weighing yourself at the same time, at most of once a week (even once a week is a little too frequently to see any real change IMHO). Don't just rely on weighing yourself either. If you measure your waist, arms, and hips regularly you can gain much more information than what the scale tells you. Remember: you are in it for the long haul, not a binge diet. If you eat too much that's OK, just be realistic and stay on track. Don't think "Oh I drank so much beer and pizza last night, I have to starve myself today". No. You ate terribly last night, so this morning have some fruit and some protein, and do some cardio and/or lifting.

You have to figure out what YOU can do sustainable, just remember even a small change adds up. If you eat 200 less KJ every day for the next year, you will weigh 2.2 kg lighter. 200 KJ is less than is in a slice of bread. Most people could easily eat 1000 KJ as a midnight snack and not even feel full from that. You don't have to make a massive change all at once, the name of the game is figuring out what you can do today and keep doing it.
