Elite for the PS4

I am eagerly awaiting the PS4 release of Elite. I've read on several forums that a release is incoming, but no specific date or even a time frame.

Is there an official statement from FD about this?

Will it contain Horizons?

Are there any options for character transfer?

Will the servers be PS4 or cross platform?


I would appreciate some info so I can hype my friends, which thinks the PC isn't that much master race ;)

Officially, nothing concrete about PS4 but that it's on the board, that's all, sorry. There's probably an exclusivity deal with MicroSoft for the XBOne port, no telling how long that will be in place.

Can you mod your HUD color, use graphic mods, and use a VR on the PS4? If not, PC master race. Help your friends see the light.

By the time it's released, if it's released, it likely will, in order to keep everyone up to date.

Both, after a fashion. Everyone will share the same background simulation, but PS4 players will only be able to see other PS4 players. The Xbox is the same. There have been some rumors that there may be some cross platform play at some point, but the console makers generally can't play well with others, so it doesn't tend to happen. Sony and M$ claim it's because they 'want to keep the gaming experience at an acceptable standard for the players' but what it really boils down to is that they can't find a way to force PC players to pay to play with their players, so they took their ball and went home. :D

it's a very obvious next step for FD to take some time in 2016 but i'm not sure if they have any contracts with microsoft that they must wait for expiration. But it's definitely confirmed to release on the PS4 at some point, From brabens own words.

Frontier don't appear to be a huge team, and that's a good thing for the most part - communication is really important on projects like this. But it does mean that bringing another platform onboard is a major undertaking; I can certainly imagine their priorities are on Horizons and getting the Xbox up to speed still. It's probably something they'll look at more closely once Morpheus (sorry, Playstation VR, as it's now called) releases.

Mind you, what we don't know yet is whether Sony's headset will also work with the PC; I hope so, as it's the one I'm most likely to get. As much as Elite in VR is tempting, it's Rez I really want to play.

OP tell your mates that they are blind sheep who have drummed into them for god knows how long that consoles are the only gaming machines....wrong wrong wrong!
I used consoles for 30 years ,2 years ago I came to pc....all hooked up to tv in living room,wireless controllers ect...can be set up like a console if so wished...and pc is way more powerfull(when buying a proper rig,and not some laptop from pc world)...once you have had Champagne you don't go back to lemonade.

also pc is open source...world is your oyster

surely your mates understand engines in cars a little?....well the xbone is a very under powered engine...the specs are already way out of date with modern gaming PCs
and your expected to game with that power for the next 7 or so years?.....great lol

come to PC and find some more intellectual friends to space with

Yeah, but they (are) doing it; -to be released with 'No Mans Sky'... My suspicion is regarding FD; as long as E:D then supports Morpheus, PS4 folks will be happy.

Well, if you have to ask... :p

Seriously though, there's nothing wrong with just wanting to flick a switch and enjoy a game. The PC really shines if you want to customize your experience somewhat, but I guess this is just like tuning a car. Some want it, but others don't see the point.

FDev have mentioned several times that they have a TIMED EXCLUSIVE with Microsoft for the XBox. They have not been willing to give any indication as to the length of the exclusive, so anything more is speculation. FDev have, on several occasions, promised that there will be a PS4 release of Elite.

Speculation: The timed exclusivity period is probably 12 months (Like Rise of the Tomb Raider and Elder Scrolls IV), but could easily be longer. Looking at previous timed exclusives, all MS exclusives I could find were 12 months or longer (there were some 6 month Sony exclusives). The official XBox release was October 6, well, you do the math.

The other big unknown is, of course, sales. How has the XBox version of Elite: Dangerous performed? If it hasn't been selling well, chances are FDev could mothball the whole thing. That also raises the question of the geographical popularity of Elite. PS4 has more than twice the installed base of XBox One outside of North America (and a few other select countries). So if Elite is much more popular in Europe and Asia than in the US, then the PS4 makes all the more sense.

Dont count on PS4 gamers if it comes to Elite Dangerous. They have their precious No mans Sky, and if you only think about talking over Elite Dangerous to a PS4 gamer prepare to get a poopbucket full of poop in your face..

NMS is coming to PC as well with no exclusivity window, so despite poor old Hello Games getting some assistance from Sony after they got flooded, it's not just a PS4 game.

The PS4 may not be as powerful as a high-end PC, but it's a match for what the average player is running. Pick the box you want to play games on, and be happy; I find having one a lot less hassle than running a second computer in the living room (and I've tried - constant Windows patches are a pain when you don't use it regularly).

Thanks for replies guys a bit disappointed that the FD info is so vague. But I take it as "not soon™".

Regarding the PC, it was more a joke (hence the smilie). My friends and I are from the generation that a personal computer was a console and vice versa. So I'm sure that a console can run Elite just fine, although I'm gonna miss my HOTAS.

I think its just as important that we have X play servers, i own a PS4 and a PC so if my farther wants to join a private or open room he can, I looking forward to a release for the PS4 as there will be PS4, Xbox and PC rival community groups with epic space battles between the formats and groups. frontier need to bring in defend your station battles. So if you drop in to a conflict system the faction starport comes under threat by defending the styarport will make it change hands between groups or factions!!!
