as much as i like the idea of being able to walk around my ship or the stations or on planets i hope it will not be entirely combat centric. dont think this should involve combat of any kind. i know this might not be a popular opinion so let me state why i think this is a bad idea. i would also like to say that if the new update proves these opinions wrong it would make me very happy but i seriously doubt that will happen.
1. the game already has a glacially slow trickle of content. trying to maintain a shooter and a flight sim will only compound this. this alone is reason enough not to try this.
2. Elite is not star citizen. seriously SC is an unfinished super expensive mess. don't try to be like them.
3. there are far better things you can spend your time on, like making black holes have pretty accretion discs and other stuff like that. make the space in the space game look more like actual space. add more variations to the stellar forges planet types, including planets with atmospheres. take a more active role in creating events that engage players in the overall narrative. i personally would rather have planets with atmospheres and better looking stellar phenomena then the ability to walk around on a planets surface, or even inside my own ships.
4. VR support. mixing shooters with vr is notoriously difficult and i would rather have more content to explore in vr then have to take my headset off just to walk around for few minutes until i get bored and fly away. Elite is one of the best VR games currently on the market and not having VR support in favor of generic shooter elements feels like a big step backwards, even if it gets added later on.
like i said i am happy to be proven wrong but i have been around the gaming community since the early 90's and i have seen these patterns play out before. to quote a favorite franchise of mine, "i've got a bad feeling about this."
EDIT: my main fear is that the FPS aspects will detract from progress on the rest of the game. atmospherics and gunfights are great but Elite is primarily a space flight game with MMO elements and i am afraid that giving the game FPS aspects will turn the game into call of duty. i genuinely hope it does not because having caves with life to explore, bases to loot thru and being able to walk around inside my corvette or in station communal areas would be awesome. FDev is a pretty trusted developer so i have faith that they will handle this. i just fear them losing sight of what drew us all to elite in the first place: that feeling when you first flew out of the mail slot in that crappy little sidewinder and realized just how big this galaxy is and how little you are. this is what compelled me to make my fears known. my fears, wants and opinions about elite and its content are as valid as anybody elses. that being said i hope that if anybody from Fdev reads this they are just smiling and thinking "just you wait. this is gonna blow you away." i hope for the best but fear the worst and expect to land somewhere in between.
