Elite or Elitist

It seems that whenever somebody has a complaint about the game there is a group of CMDR's who do not hesitate to tell the OP that:

1 They are stupid
2 They are not playing the game right
3 They have no skill

Often these CMDR's resort to personal attacks.

I have a new term for them

They are the: DANGEROUS ELITE

You are stupid, you are not playing the game right and have no skill.....lol, only joking. Its a forum, so everyone is entitled to their opinion, its just that some get defensive, or aggressive with their particular stance. Can always be deflated with a bit of comedy.

No there aren't. You just made that bit up as an excuse to post something that you thought was clever. So you got the title of the game the wrong way round. Well done you.

I really was hoping that this community would be a little less toxic than the usual internet gaming forum. There should logically be more mature players who loved the original games. But I agree with the OP there does seem to be a lot of keyboard heros here and not all of them are spotty teenagers with a hormone problem

But there are stupid people playing the game wrong that have no skill. I'm one of them. Solidarity brother and sister numpties. Lets pass this chicken to Tienanmen Square to show our support for the rights of others to be useless yet happy.

I think it comes down to tone........ If someone blindly comes in ranting, complaining about something which is a core part of the game in a hostile and agressive manner, then it is human nature to respond in kind, esp if it is regarding a topic with hundreds of replies which are on the top page of the forum.

If however someone posts with an issue with the game in a constructive and friendly - even if slight annoyed - manner, then I completely agree the poster should expect to be responded to civilly
Respect is a 2 way street and all that!.

The issue with this forum is that a lot of people don't know the difference between general criticism and outright complaining.

Someone who provides criticism in an adult manner, with explanations of why they are criticizing that part of the game, will have a thread full of people who also provide criticism back, and everyone has a nice discussion over that part of the game, and where it can be improved.

Other people who resort to using terms like "care bear" (seems quite prevalent on the forums) and other derogatory terms, insults FDEV and just generally is a complete moan about how they are leaving the game due to their own fault or they don't like it, will most likely receive the same reaction back at them.

For example: Constructive Criticism looks like:

"I'm not too sure on whether or not the reputation system punishes more than rewards. I think it would be nice to see some sort of progress meter, for feedback to the player on their actions and so they know if they are doing the right thing or not. What do you guys think?"

Other types of comments that may cause people to be hostile back is something like:

"This game sucks. I handed in a mission and got NO REPUTATION. LIKE WHAT! How could FDEV be so BLIND! I won't be recommending this game to friends AT ALL! I quit! The game is full of care bears"

See the difference between the two posts? Unfortunately we see more of the latter here.

But then that is almost always to complaints about:

1) The insurance policy
2) The trade grind
3) The learning curve

The only personal attacks I have seen are from some anti PVP players and their counterparts... oh, and your little quip just now.

... which depending on the person posting, might be valid responses.

You know the difference between the terms "newbie" and "n00b"?

  • Newbie: a new player, someone who is new and doesn't know things that older / more experienced players do
  • n00b: Someone who isn't new and should know better but behaves as if they are new

Elite: Dangerous is a complicated game. It's not a hand-holding Facebook game that requires no thought and no effort; it requires a significant investment of time to learn the functions of the game, learn how the gameplay works and develop the skills required to play. People coming on here and complaining that "the game sucks" when they have made no attempt at these things are n00bs and will get no sympathy (or they're trolls and can go... somewhere else).

Personal attacks are not OK; click the "Report this post" button if you see them and let the mods sort it out.

Some players just seem to belive that elite dangerous needs to be historically correct to original elite. Like nothing has happened in 20 years.

I belive this game should be looked on with current gen eyes.

A game is not harder or more elite because it takes a long time to get to some stations for example.

Hard games tests your skills, not your patience.

The trouble with text is that often context may be misinterpreted and the OP may have failed to succinctly get their point over. Or vice versa. This is often a failing in grammar and punctuation. Which, for a few, may be problematic. People often get angry for no perceived reason whatsoever other than they misread or misunderstood the post. This then escalates.

However, there are always a few who enjoy strife. Personally I enjoy banter and a well crafted but good natured insult. To be insulted beautifully is to be slapped with velvet gloves. Good natured strife and banter is a great tool and the Mods have to strike a balance between allowing this and preventing real abuse. Its difficult for them I accept and Ive had 2 warnings myself. But they must allow some otherwise this forum will become a place for the politically correct.

Constructive criticism is one of the most valuable tools in the armoury of advancement and discovery and it should never be stifled. It is often where the seeds of ideas and progress are made.

Also mistakes happen. Mistakes and errors teach you much more than you would realise. The best way to understand how to do something is to utterly understand how not to. How not to can lead you to avenues you never thought existed.

Anyway, its a game and its meant to be fun. Play it for fun.

Yup.

The first post is a mirror. The author of the thread will generally have the tone and approach they employ reflected back at them in the replies.

Its hard to not be toxic when you see thread after thread wanting ED to be easier. Many here played 1984 Elite and we are grown ups wanting depth and challenge. So yeah, sometimes you get a little toxic when the uber casual crowd day after day ask FD to make everything simpler.

But, im usually not toxic on the forum, but if you saw my face it would be all bubbling, glowing vile green while reading such posts. :D

The only real nastyness or elitism I've seen on here is more aimed towards people complaining about aspects of the game that make it what it is.
dont like it?
check out Star Trek online, plenty of PvE, no learning curve and lots of 'P2W'.
im pretty new to this game but info is easily available via the powers of Google.
im not going to cry if I get pirated, why? Because it's part of the online experience.

Yeah, it doesn't matter what your criticism is or how you word it you will always get someone wading in to tell you you're a cretin who couldn't possibly understand their sophisticated game so sod off back to CoD.

I said it before elsewhere, some elements of the elite community have mistaken themselves for an elite cabal.
