Elite VR - any recommendations?

So I've just sold off my Rift CV1 headset as it's making me tired, and the amount of USB inputs meant I had to get a USB hub, and the signal sometimes gets interrupted on my hub causing the headset to twitch all over the place at random moments (not great in a dog-fight!).

I'm looking to get a new one, but after reading reviews about the Rift S, everything I disliked about the Rift CV1 are amplied worse in the Rift S, with the exception of the resolution.
I'm now looking at a PiMax Artisan, but I don't want to have to splash out for all the sensors to boot and experience potentially the same issue again using a USB hub. Does anyone know if this can be used without the stations? If it can, is the performance any different than using it with the basestations? (I won't be using the touch controllers).

Are there any other recommendations for VR headsets for Elite? I'm looking for the most immersive experience, I'm not particularly bothered about the actual VR touchy/feely games.

The HP Reverb G2 is the droid you seek.

A fairly comprehensive breakdown in this thread :

HP G2 is supposedly the current "best" helmet, but if you want to stick with Oculus I've heard good things about the Quest 2 as well.

That's also portable if you want.

Hp G2 reverb hands down best atm

Thanks, guys. I was actually reading through a bunch of stuff after posting this thread and stumbled across the G2. I've just placed an order now!

Aye my friend just got a Quest 2. It looks nice, it's got some good feature upgrades with the refresh rate increase, the FoV isn't bad either. However, it is very similar to the Rift S, and I've seen so many reviews where they say there's improvements in some areas, but setbacks in others, and I think the decider for me was that most of the negatives I had in the CV1, transferred over into the Rift S, and then were made worse on that second generation... I would've loved to have stayed with Oculus, but they're just behind on the tech for now. Maybe in a few years, they'll release the next-generation headset that'll be at an affordable price too!

I've a rift S. It's a lovely piece of kit.
1.75 hmd setting in-game
Super sampling 1.0
Environment on ultra
Rest medium or high.
Also run a mod that alters lighting and hud.
And 6 mths down the line I still am amazed at how good it looks.
Can't wait till my G2 arrives. Missus has it under the tree. I'll be up midnight +1to open it

This USB signals getting interrupted thing. You aren't running Cosair's iCUE software by any chance are you?

Nope. I've got SteelSeries keyboard, mouse and mat that all plug in via USB 2.0/3.0 and then I had three sensors for Rift, plus the headset, a flight shifter, and flight stick... and my SteelSeries Pro headset uses two USB 3.0 ports for the charge station + signal... so ultimately had way too many devices for only 4 USB 3.0 ports. I got a USB hub that draws mains power to better handle signals, but occasionally one or two sensors would drop off while gaming, causing the headset to twitch to a side randomly.

I had the same issue with usb regarding the saitek x56.
A powered usb 3.0 hub which l ONLY plug the throttle into fixed all the ghosting issues. That and turning down the lighting .

The reason I asked is I have had similar problems to you with USB glitches. iCUE it turns out was the culprit. I only use it to control my CPU cooler fans but it was causing havoc with USB and Bluetooth devices.

I have a CV1 also, and had my heart set on the G2 as the next big upgrade, but then the Quest 2 came out and that made me stop and think. I like the idea of the Oculus Go too (watching movies in bed etc, Plex actually supports it), but the resolution is pants. The Quest 2 fixes that.

It's significantly cheaper than the G2 as well, which is a factor.

But I see you've already ordered a G2, and I'm sure you'll be delighted with it, so good luck. :)

Rift S are cheap now on second market and I am very tempted, but I don't have a FB account and I don't want to create one.
Is it really mandatory like the quest 2 ? Do I need to stop looking at oculus HMD for good ?
What would be a proper alternative ?

I’m still playing with my CV1. I feel so behind the times!

I haven’t actually seen a headset in the last few years that is a good enough upgrade to warrant the cash to pay for it, mess about setting it up etc...

I don’t have a Facebook account, and nor will I get one, and so that rules out the Quest 2 (by the way Oculus have told me I have until Jan 2023 to move to Facebook or be locked out of my current headset). Although, at £300, it is half the price of the G2.

I WAS 100% going to buy the G2, but I play other games too and I’ve seen bad reports about the hand tracking (my CV1 with 3 sensors is flawless).
I also have a fan cooled PC running a 1080Ti, and I reckon an upgrade all round would be needed to get the best out of the G2.

But... that display! My oh my what an upgrade that would be.

£600 is a fair whack for a new headset that, yes is a huge upgrade on visuals, but is a step back in tracking. Plus new GPU, perhaps full system.

My plan for now is to wait for the 3080Ti to come out, and see what my options are at that time

I'm using (still) the Quest 1, it's ok but even with the mods I have made it is still uncomfortable. I'm hanging my hopes on the DecaGear and have placed my pre-order for US$10.

In ED though, it’s all just a step forward since you aren’t using hand-tracking at all.
Like the (full) VR experience is cool and all, but it’s got nothing on ED’s VR experience in my opinion. So that’s the only reason why I’m buying the G2

Just mentioning.

The handtracking feature on the Q2 is about as usefull as the voice recognition systems used in the 1990's.
It is truly awful and impractical.

I was just wondering if you guys would help me out a bit Ive just designed a head strap/module. Ive called it the VR Clip Head Module
Ive got a pre launch page in indiegogo. Link : VR Clip Head Module ....... if you could have a look let me know what you think? Show a few friends see what the think.

All I see against the OQ2 is Facebook.

G2 has issues. High volume shuts off the headset, tracking poor, controllers not supported in all games (xplane 11 etc) , not plug and play be ready to edit config files by hand. The list just goes on.
