Elite vs Reality - Earth view from the Moon / Saturn and Titan

On top, Elite Dangerous in-game image made by me, Sol system, 2017. Below is a image made by a modern HD camera by the Japanese JAXA probe in 2007.
In addition to the visual evidence, another fact proved: My ship was at 1.22ls of Earth in this position or 365,756 km and the distance Earth-Moon measured is 384,399 km.
The pictures of the Apollo missions usually confuse giving the impression of the Earth being much larger seen from the surface of the Moon. It all depends on the focal length and angulation of the lens. The view of the astronauts would be closer than we would find in the Elite if we could land on the Moon, since the game uses the actual orbital size and distances.
About the moon surface texture in Elite, when we can land on her (because it is not blocked by permit, it does not really have the modeling of the horizons engine yet) I expect the terrain modeling to be made as close as possible to the actual moon. By the time it has a very crappy texture when we arrive at this drop distance.

Small attempt to reproduce another real image in Elite (the another was earth view from moon by Kaguya probe). By the Left is Saturn and Titan in the Elite in-game made by me and the right is the image made by the Cassini probe. Unfortunately, rings don't cast shadows on planets in Elite ... who knows in the future?
I had to move far enough to compensate for the 200mm focal length of Cassini's wide angle camera and therefore lower the original image of the probe to simulate the view of it without zooming. I hope that with the new camera, I can reproduce other images. Because with the debug camera without special features you can not play most of the images from NASA.

Digital zoom version. The bad quality is because I increased the image, since even being a screenshot in fullHD, it was very far from object to reproduce the real image aspect.

Is this a complaint?
Or just a comparison for interests sake?

Just for the fun and challenge of achieving these images taking into account factors that differ between the experience of the game that reproduces the human vision in comparison with the most varied types of cameras used in the probes. It is common to see anyone who thinks the game is unrealistic because of differences with NASA images. Although some graphical features limit the appearance, the models in the elite are very good in scale, distances and measurements.

Regarding pic 1... Are you sure the moon's surface had finished rendering when you took that shot? My GPU struggles to show all the rough bits on planet/moon surfaces, so I find that it becomes clearer & more detailed in distinct steps as I approach.
Regarding pic 2... It depends on the "season" on Saturn. Near either Equinox, the rings are edge-on to the sun, so no shadow.

Only slightly off-topic: I'd really like it if FD fixed the local time on Earth. At 12:00 GMT, Britain should be in sunlight, not darkness.

I really like this game and this experience was to show its quality, it was not very clear in the initial post.

Pic 1 - Yes, the rendering was okay, with the configs at ultra and high resolution. The moon does not have horizon modeling yet. They are probably still developing the surface to reproduce reality in detail. The current texture is for long-distance viewing.

Pic 2 - Most likely it was not the same angle / period of Titan's passage or the same season, but the engine does not generate the leftover ring on the surface, just the opposite side of the planet on the ring. The intention was to reproduce alignment of Titan, Saturn and the rings of the original image in the best possible way, because this game is fantastic.

Fixing a duplicate post, sorry!

By the way, I really like this game and my little research was to show the realism of game, even though it has some limitations for now, comprehensible.
I will try to reproduce other NASA images as much as possible. Many people do not realize, by not understanding of photography, that as images made in space do not represent exactly what they are seen by human eye by several factors like type of lens, sensitivity of the sensors, angle of vision and focal length.

Lovely thread. Have all my rep for the day.

Really cool pictures, thanks for sharing :)

If anything, I think this highlights how much stronger the light of a sun needs to be if you're looking at the moon pictures (unless the contrast/brightness of the image was enhanced by the Japanese science people first).

Saturn could look a little more realistic with its atmosphere, but I'm guessing Gas Giants in general will get a graphical upgrade later this year, maybe? Also, the rings really need strong shadows in the game - no shadows just shows what is really missing, and it is a big shame - although, I cannot recall shadows on other planets with rings besides gas giants, so I think it is something they should work on.

All in all though, pretty accurate where the moons and planets should be! That's the most impressive thing.

Have some rep for posting an interesting thread amongst the usual complaining :)

Yeah the moon surface doesn't look like it has loaded correctly, or you're using a lower setting maybe?

I think the moon is currently not landable? Does it have high res LODs when close up? Not tried it myself

Thank you CMDRs! I'll try again with multiplier supersampling via the alt + f10. I confused myself and I thought it was the shift key, but they gave me the correct tip and I even discovered that it is possible to increase the supersample multiplier in Settings.xml

OP,

wow! Great dedication!

I think the new vanity cam will help you immensely for other shots in the future when 2.3 drops.

I hope so. I can not wait to use the new camera since it has zoom support, even with little magnification, already opens many possibilities!

Why does everything have to be a complaint?

Good work on comparisons OP :)

I asked because I wasn't sure; notice how I asked if it's a complaint OR "a comparison for interests sake"?

As a side note, if you're unsure about the tone of someone's post, it's a good idea to find out the intent before making unsubstantiated accusations; which is what I did.

Are they HDR pics?

No they are not.

Come back when you understand.

The original image I made in 1920x1080, settings on ultra, but it was taken far from Saturn to generate the right perspective on Titan. The second image was enlarged by me only to highlight the equivalent angle of each object in relation to the actual image. (I'll try supersampling next time)
In the case of the surface of the moon, I explained in the post.

Are they HDR pics?

No they are not.

Come back when you understand.

HDR is out of fashion, and will be this decade's 'floating heads' or 'lens flare'. It will remain a technique, but successful HDR implementation will mean that you barely or won't notice it.

Very good OP. It`s realistic stuff like that which keeps me flying this game! A pity the shadows don`t show up...

You should bring this to the Dev`s attention.
