elite will not save my bindings

Elite dangerous will not save my bindings. When I go to Options and ship control I've been putting in my bindings and when I am through assigning all to my new joystick I select 'apply' and it now says 'custom' and not 'keyboard and mouse'.
However when I come back to options, ship control it now says 'keyboard and mouse' instead of 'custom'.
Its not saving what I put in for changes. I then put in the binding direct my saved backup file and changed the original to a backup file. Restarted Elite and that made no difference, still will not save my new settings.

Try connecting your new joystick to a different USB port. It might lack power.

Restart the game and see if the binding works.


You can only view a log file in the bindings folder. There might be a clue what is wrong

Go to the subforum view. Scroll up. See the "lost your binds..." stickied post? Read it and check your situation against it.

If neither that nor @GroG79 's suggestion about the USB power does work, we'll need more info. A lot more info - because these two cover >99% of all issues so far encountered with bindings.

i think the remaining 1% is for peeps who can do a calaculation like 2+2 on a calculator and the answer comes out as 6
how can that be you ask and the answer is quite simple..........
they dont know how to use a caculator even with a simple instruction manual on how to use one
pebkac rules the 1% and flat earthers should not play elite anyhoo because it should clash with there sensability

Have you checked file/folder permissions? Didn't accidentally make anything read only?

That would be my guess. Especially the StartPreset4.start file - if that one is readonly, the game will revert back to the default KBM binding preset the moment you leave the controls menu.

if you follow my pinned guide stuck at the top of this subforum
if i start the game with a controller unplugged this happens

as soon as i plug in my controller it says loading for two seconds then this happens

if i restart with the controler unplugged its pic 1 if i restart with it plugged in its pic 2
hi diddle dee no binding issues fa me
(if it does not do the above then you have not folowed the guide properly)

Just thought I'd chip in with the "make sure you don't have copies / backups of your binds in the same folder" ...

I found the solution. My 'Binding' directory was full of backup files. Totally a rats nest. I deleted all backup and started with a clean directory. Only left startpreset4.start and bindingloadingerrors.log and no Custom binding log knowing it would creating a new one.
In any case its now saving my changes.
