Elite: X-Wing

Hello lads!

Well, first and foremost, I thought about putting this in the off-topic section... But it's based on Elite as much as it is on X-Wing. Point is... There's a spectacular board game called X-Wing Miniatures by Fantasy Flight Games. I've spent well over a grand on it. Now, I'm not a fantastically good player, I am quite terrible in a competitive setting frankly, I tend to collect the X-Wings more than play them... And I don't have many people to play X-Wing with, so I tend to play solo a bit using the X-Wing "Solo AI" app. That being said, I'm also an avid Elite: Dangerous player, D&D player, a gargantuan dweeb, and US Air Force sniper pilot...
Now I've thought about this for quite some time, but haven't been able to begin working on it due to training, but I've always wanted to make a board game. Recently, I thought to use X-Wing's mechanics as a basis for an alternate rule set which would give people a new way to play an already spectacular game; So, would anyone be interested in an X-Wing miniature's RPG?

First and foremost, I believe that the basis for an RPG is already there. There is a "cost" system for practically everything in the game. There are skills, consumables to use, etc. What truly inspired me to pursue this idea is the X-Wing Mission Control. It's a fantastic way to build and share missions and stories that you can have in an RPG, in a space setting, and with the X-Wing mechanics. Now, I mentioned Elite a couple of times. Besides being one of my favorite games, it inspired the progression system that I would use in this "fan rule set." How the ships would scale in price, how their skills and modules would work, the missions, "random encounters" (such as the unidentified signal sources), reputation for faction progression, how non-player enemies would scale in "rank" and reward, buying back your ship if it is destroyed, etc.

Essentially, I'm describing a game that centers around core RPG tropes, using the X-Wing mechanics (and universe, I suppose, there isn't an E:D board game unfortunately), and the progression and feel of Elite: Dangerous. How does that sound? I understand there would be a lot of work to do, and I'm more than willing to do it. I think it would be a lot of fun... And I'll also have very little to do for the next couple of months until my next leg of training begins, hah...

Lastly, the most fun I've ever had in X-Wing was when 4 or 5 of my friends were playing at once. We each controlled a ship, argued and laughed as we blasted each other with little consequence... And once, I asked myself; what if I actually put work into getting this ship? What if I put blood sweat and tears into bounty hunting, trading in a dinky ship for months, to scrounge up enough dosh to get this NOT AS dinky ship that has 1 more shield strength than the old one? And because of that, I survived just a bit longer than I would have before!

I feel, just as it would in an RPG or D&D, you'd have a connection with your ship and the fake person sitting inside it going on a wonderful journey though the star(map)s accruing stories to each and every blast burn on your hull.

I'd appreciate any comments in regards to interest on this project. I currently have a very early, half-finished build of the ruleset, if anyone is interested.

-Thank you all.

I suggest reposting your original post using plain black font or something, because I can't see it at all (had to highlight it to read it!)

I had an idea for incorporating RP elements to people playing ED. Have a look at this thread:

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=196958

It's an idea I had a while back, but I don't have the time to set something like this up. But the good thing about it is, once the format is setup the groups (should) more or less be able to manage themselves :)

I see, that's interesting. But, to be clear, I'm designing a tabletop RPG, like... To be played like D&D. With dice, and a bunch of nerds in one room. And cheeto dust. I luckily have a ton of stuff set up already, like how X-Wing plays and what not... I'm at 8 pages worth of rules or so now... I wager it'll be quite the little handbook lol.

I'm an RPG nut ( not much of a surprise, I'm sure ED has way more than the average number of RPGers). Count me in for playtesting - sounds good :)

Ahh, sorry, I skimmed some key parts it seems.

There actually is an Elite RPG being developed, in case you didn't know: http://daftworks.co.uk/eliterpg/index.php/Welcome

I'm actually interested in a different Fantasy Flight Star Wars game - the Edge of the Empire RPG seems intriguing.

Boardgame - NO. Create an OPEN X-Wing clan involving all its Escort Missions etc. and head out to populated space as goals for any interactions that arise - YES!

Oh dang! That looks really cool! I'll definitely keep an eye on it. And, wow, it's actually official! Again, as I stated, it's an X-Wing based RPG, that I'm trying to get to mimic the feel of Elite. Here's the work in progress for anyone interested. It might not mean much for people who never played X-Wing though. But hey, the one thing that my game is definitely gonna be... is free. :p

Please, all, feel free to read through it and let me know what you think... Whether or not you think I should... "quit it," I suppose, I'll finish it. It'll be one of the few things that I will ever finish in my life lol. And at the very least, I'm sure SOMEONE will enjoy it out there, regardless of how well the official Elite RPG will do (and I hope it does super well).

Well that's essentially what I'm doing, more or less. Just like how you have to whip out terrain or a map for battles in D&D, you'll take out a mat for battles in E:X. But I'm basically trying to build an experience outside of the battles, to make them more personal... It's not just one guy and 100 squad points of ships and upgrades... It's one guy with 1 ship and 100 squad points of... experience! :p

If it brings you joy, do it :D I'm not familiar with the X-Wing game so I can't comment on the mechanics at all.

Shame, it's loads of fun, bruv. But, thanks. :)

all creations using Elite content belong to Frontier Developments. Thanks.

Two things on that... So fan-art... And even my two Elite tattoos belong to Frontier? Hmm, seems kinda sketch, friend. Secondly, there is little in the ruleset that has anything to do with E:D. I have the word Elite in there, commander, and some ranks from the reputations. I'm trying to make something that may feel like Elite. Luckily, a company can't own a feeling as of yet. Thanks.

I too have been collecting the x-wing miniatures game :)
I also had an idea to play it MTG style to make for quicker games.
Not sure if this would upset the balance of the ships too much since it would take out the manuvering aspect as well as invalidate turrets.
I love setting up big fleet actions, but it takes so long to finish a 300 pt game that I've only done it once so far.
An RPG adaptation sounds cool but I have little experience with those so I'm not sure how it would be done.
I'll give ur file a read later on and let you know what I think.
There was another thread started on miniatures a while back, but didnt seem to get much interest.

I might have have been dreaming but I am pretty sure there is already a Elite miniature game based on FFG X-wing rules. There are even photos of it somewhere. The guys that made it actually contacted Fantasy Flight Games to license the X-wing rules but got shot down (this is from Lave Radio).

Hmm, I never heard of it, I mean... I never found it when I researched it. I even posted this on the official X-wing miniatures forum and no one mentioned it before either. They're actually quite supportive of me.

Secondly, besides having the word Elite in the title of my free, fan made, ruleset using X-Wing Miniatures as the core, there is no other mention or use of Elite: Dangerous, the game, or any ships, items, or mechanics anywhere in there. I'm trying to make something that may feel like Elite. Luckily, a company can't own a feeling as of yet. Thanks.

This is what killed Mechwarrior.

Also, I feel I've gotten unfairly "shut down" at any and all attempts to create content for this game. Not complaining, just informed that FD owns me and even accused of being a con artist for creating a thread so I could design free signatures for folks, all because I suggested making a commission on ORIGINAL PAINTINGS.

Still feel slightly miffed at that. This is just another case of someone "killing the fun". Next tell KISS fans they can't paint their faces.

Well, dang, that's pretty preposterous, my friend. I mean, I love E:D more than any other game. I've played it the most, I even spent the most money on it... But if FD wants my flap of skin with the Elite logo, and the other flap of skin with the wireframe Coriolis station and wireframe cobra, they'll have to come here and get it from me. Though, again, luckily for me, besides stating that E:D inspired me, I don't mention anything else of Elite, so they can go ahead and try.

That being said, unless I get a cease and desist (which I doubt would have any merit for my game at all), I'll continue to work on it, and distribute it for free as planned. Hell, if you wanna make me a signature, that would be rad. In-game I'm CMDR Chip Washington (yes, that's right, the Galnet News anchor, indeed, lol).

Here is one:https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=197034

There are more. I can look for them when on a computer. Not sure if the rpg bit is covered by this though.

That... is absolutely sick as sh*t... I've always wanted an Elite game like that. As soon as I heard of X-Wing, I thought Elite would be spectacular for it. Also, no, RPG rules aren't used for that. It's just the combat system. Again, as I mentioned before, I'm pretty much leaving the combat alone. I'm adding tons of stuff and rules outside of the battles. And instead of one person controlling a team of ships, you control one, your friends control one, and a game master controls a bunch of mobs for you to fight, a la classic d&d.

Wow, talk about bringing an old topic from the dead, huh? Since my last post, I've been very busy with flight school and all that jazz, so I had no time to work on E:X at all, if anyone even remembers what it is, lol.

Well, I worked on it some more, and currently, this is as close as I can get to a final release without play testing, lol. I can't think of anything else to add here (except for the ship sheet, which I need to figure out how to make... and make attractive too). Take a look, let me know what you think. Thanks!
