Embarrassing rookie error!

A friend of mine has recently bought E: D and I paid him a visit at his place last night.

I helped with numerous questions and controller settings, and helped him understand some basic things he hadn't yet figured out.

He was pottering around the Pleiades with no particular aim, so I suggested he visit Betelgeuse. We plot a course in his mostly C and D rated Courier, and on the way I show him how to work the FSS, and get some good planetary scans in on the way.

Finally we reach the final jump to Betelgeuse and initiate jump sequence. Hmmm. The jump goes on and on and on. Finally: Ping! Connection error and we're back at the menu.

Reload, and to my utter surprise Betegeuse in now totally filling the view - we're around 1,100 Ls from it.

No problem, think I, we'll just engage Supercruise and get some distance between us so we can scan the system and go land on the landable planet near the supergiant.

Supercruising... heat builds... 100%.... 200%.... 275%... ship modules begin to fail. Of course not a heatsink in sight.

I think that the temps will begin to drop any moment. Any moment now. 300%... hull dropping. [yesnod]

In a panic I drop out of SC, but it's too late and in a whirl we're soon looking at the rebuy screen. [where is it]

Really embarrassing noob error from a 1,000 hours in CMDR :D

Of course we should have jumped out of Betelgeuse: hindsight is a wonderful teacher, and he wasn't too upset.

I've got more hours into this game than I should admit publicly, and I exploded while trying to take off from The View 2 nights ago.

Even the most knowledgeable can make stupid mistakes from time to time :D

Sorry to hear that. There are some good YouTube videos on taking off & landing on high G worlds. Any ship with any thruster installed can take off and land on any planet. The game will always adjust your aft and bottom thrusters (only these so don’t roll) to slightly overcome the planet’s gravity to prevent players from getting stranded. Yep, the game cheats here. It is also useful to cycle FA on/off/on while landing to control descent rate. For takeoffs, thrust up to several thousand feet, then while still thrusting slowly up pitch up while using main thrusters ahead till vertical, boosting when you can. Never stop thrusting up until you have transitioned to vertical. If you do or transition too low you could develop an unrecoverably high rate of descent. That procedure should get you vertical with a positive ascent rate to engage SC.

Not that we have shown sympathy, let the jokes begin: I'm sure your eyebrows will be fully regrown in a couple of weeks. :)

Engaging SC creates a lot of heat. More importantly, (because of handwavium) your ship experiences much more heat from close proximity to a star in SC compared to being in normal space. In this case OP happened to drop out of SC very near to a very large and very hot star. If this situation happens when initiating SC: pop a heat sink or drop from SC. As stated above, high waking has less thermal effects and overall peak & duration of heat spike is lower.

Reminds me of the time I forgot that I had taken my fuel scoop off and tried to get a jet cone boost off Jackson's Lighthouse. At least these kinds of mistakes only ever get made once!

I did all kinds of research immediately following the explosion, went really well and learned a lot. "Failure is the greatest teacher" and all that... Descent and landing went smooth as I was careful. Taking off, still had my pips in shields and had only one boost, so slammed back into the planet in reverse at 400m/s.

Lesson learned and all I could do was laugh at myself as I respawned back at Jameson and headed back out to try again.

Was going to say that they've had a bit of painite based help. Master in Imperial rank isn't that quick though. Maybe we all have different definitions of 'recent'.

Wing massacre missions are the way to shower noobs in gold. They don't even need to fight. And with the right factions, you get rank from those at the same time.

Maybe due to a bug you ended up inside the star? Betelgeuse is famously huge. I thought it was closer to 2,000ls in diameer, but I could be wrong.

He "recently bought the game" and he's in a Courier?

Thanks to the new payouts players new to the game are now flying Belugas after a few weeks of playing and of course get stuck in the slot because a few weeks of flying isn't really enough to be able to have a feel for a ship like that.
I don't really mind the payouts, but I don't think it's good for new players.

But to stay on topic: I am very cautious and double check most of the time. I mean, of course I managed to get deep fried by a sun, and I also pressed the boost button instead of the target button, but so far without deadly consquences! I actually though managed to crash and explode on a low G planet because I thought it was a good idea to boost a bit because it took so long to arrive at that surface site... That was kinda funny.
I also once returned from the Formidine Rift with a lot of data on board, entered the station but forgot to ask for docking permission. And on the way out I got caught by that fence around the slot... I managed to free myself via landing gear off and on trick, and made it out with 5 seconds left on the timer...
