Proper number is 400 billion star systems in ED's Galaxy.The Colonia area is also inhabited, with a lot of stations and populated systems. It's about 22000 LY from Sol.
Other than that, there are some lone stations scattered here and there, usually near a nebula or something. There's a few located between the bubble and Colonia, for example.
The rest of space is uninhabited, and with over 4 billion star systems, that's a lot of space!
