Oh, I will agree that Byron was a depressing sod and more than a little bit "odd".
What reminded me though, wasn't the thought of a dying sun, a cold black earth or the mention of the Universe, but the viper in the middle of it.
As a result of my early exposure to this game, Viper always has Elite connotations whenever I see it written....(Abbreviated)...
Actually funnily enough, there was a new series screened tonight on the Discovery channel titled "How the Earth Works" (7pm), mainly discussing and showing the effects that Mt. Krakatoa had on the earths climate etc.in the past.
Interesting but unfortunately spoiled for me personally because of the loud racy, and in a lot of cases improper use of some music in certain scenes!

...why do they do that nowadays?...it just drowned out in some instances the presenters dialogue

Anyway...rant over.

Back to your post with the quote by Byron, which was probably due to Mt. Tambora erupting roundabout the time, and was estimated to be larger than the last Krakatoa eruption.
In any event, the dust and gas from both eruptions would seriously contaminate the upper atmosphere I reckon, as well as catastrophic events at ground level, so maybe Byron wasn't such a doomsayer after all in this instance.

Which leads me back on topic. End games, or probably lack of.
The year 3202, for example...Krakatoa and or Tambora decide to have massive eruptions, Earth is supposed, or hinted at as being a virtual garden of Eden, and mainly populated by the idle rich? in Elite Dangerous. If that happened there's the possibility that just this type of 'genuine' event could radically alter the gameplay in the game. Mars and other nearby stations/systems could suddenly have an influx of refugees, stock markets could collapse, and a host of other unforeseen changes could occur. All events a catalyst for varied 'mission' types...and exploitation.
I just think that 'real' believable events like these examples fit in perfectly with a 'real' universe in a sense, so I can't really see an 'End game' being much of a worry. As a side note...another example of the 'virtually real' universe in Elite easily lending itself well to further growth in content.
That's unless the 'gods' of the universe decide that it's become too much of a responsibility to continue.

There is the danger though that a 'bad day' at the office could result in a statement by some of the developers to perhaps say.. "That system has become a pain in the neck....kill them all!"

....
