Endless idiocy. More of the same.

Sorry OP, but the predictable responses of the forum members to your OP only further reinforce the interpretation of the community as being toxic. They are the problem, not you or your point of view.

What problem? Throw a big wobbly over something - valid as it may be - and people are going to find it amusing and poke a bit of fun at you. This is no more true here than anywhere, on or off line. Sorry, but it's undeniably funny to see people losing their rag - ever seen Faulty Towers?

Okay, I was a backer for Elite Dangerous since the summer of 2014. The game had serious problems for a long time when it was being developed, but most of the technical stuff seems to have been ironed out. However, one of the things that has never been ironed out is the idiocy and unbelievable behavior of the people and everything else in the Elite Dangerous universe. There is something clearly wrong with the people at Frontier, who seemed to have decided that their universe was going to be filled with people and machines that all behaved as if they were psychotic. Here's an example of what I'm talking about, and then you can all insult me, call me names, tell me I'm an idiot, whatever. Do whatever makes you feel good. But, again, I think my point is valid, even if you don't like the way I'm expressing it.

Here's what happened: I go to Sanuma, and get a mission for a minor faction in Dunyach Gateway. They used to be in charge, but aren't anymore (I have no idea why... makes no sense at all), so I'm trying to help them regain control of the system. I get an influence mission from them to help out. It's a surface scan mission, where you have to get data from a data point, and the data point and the base where it's located just happen to be owned by this same minor faction, whom I am considered allied to. The mission is (of course) in another star system. So, I get there, and I fly towards the surface of the planet to land, I have to endure the ridiculous multiple rescannings and relocations of the base, and finally I land. I get out of the ship, and into my little SRV, and slowly and leisurely cruise the 600 meters to the base where the data link is. As I approach the base, I'm delighted to see that the base, and everything in it, shows up green on my display, because I am an ally of the faction who owns the base, and they gave me the mission to recover their data. "Easy peasy!", I'm thinking, and I continue to cruise on in towards the data point, which I can clearly see, figuring I'll scan, leave, and go back and collect my reward.

I pull up next to it, and... What's this? Security perimeter breach? I'm in big trouble. What's going on!? I was sent here by the people who own the place to scan the data link and recover their data. "What the...??!!", I'm now thinking, as the turrets and skimmers all open fire on my SRV. Well, I didn't even stick around to get destroyed or run away. I can't scan the data link now, because I'm under fire, so the mission is basically over, unless I want to pull away and try again, which I don't think should be necessary. So, I logged out, and, once again, I'm done with this ridiculously silly and laughable game for another 4 months, until I log in again someday, and see if Frontier finally decided not to program the behavior of things in this game as if the universe is run by a bunch of lying and crooked psychopaths.

This is a stupid game, friends. Face it. It's really, really stupid. The crime and punishment stuff gets stupider with every update, there isn't anything for players to look forward to, like building your own stations, or claiming your own system. It's almost totally empty of content, and what content there is is frustrating in a sort of sado-masochistic way, that really makes you feel like a moron for playing the game at all. The stuff in this game just wouldn't occur the way it does. The game itself, it's true, looks absolutely breathtaking, and it is really cool flying around between star systems and exploring, but the gameplay and the content is unbearably, insufferably stupid. What happened to me makes no sense whatsoever, and no amount of rationalization makes it suddenly seem sensible, despite the fanboy hostility that is often irrationally displayed in these forums whenever anyone dares to criticize this game. In any sort of universe that made sense, and not in Frontier's paranoid schizophrenic pretend universe, if you were sent to a company's data link by the company itself to recover their data, and you were an ALLY of theirs, YOU WOULD NOT BE ATTACKED BY THEIR DEFENSES AT THE BASE!

You would simply drive up, totally unmolested, do your scan, turn around and leave. Everything with Elite dangerous is a big stupid fight, a mind-numbingly improbable series of events, and a ridiculous scenario which would never occur in reality. And this game is supposed to be lauded and applauded because of its realism?

This used to happen to me a lot before 3.0 dropped, but hasn't happened since......so I assumed it had been fixed.

I do agree that (1) it is high time these scan missions were labeled as Legal or Illegal on the mission board & (2) high time that the Mission Automatically checked off Mission Giver vs Settlement Owner. If they are the same, then the mission would be automatically *legal*!!!

Reading through the first page of this thread, I feel like this is not how the community should present itself, even when in disagreement...
I was quite interested in the OP's points, and some of them I can relate to aswell. Simply because all these loopholes in the game don't bother most of us doesn't mean we should not talk about them.
That's not how you get progress.

Faulty Towers is crap... Seen any comedy since 1980 grandad?

To give the OP his due, hes merely echoing the sentiments of others who have complained about the nonsensical crime and punishment implications for picking up a small bounty through trivial things such as a datapoint scan mission or having a fender bender with a kamakaze NPC in a mailslot. So I fail to see why you are giving them such a hard time?

However, one of the things that has never been ironed out is the idiocy and unbelievable behavior of the people and everything else in the Elite Dangerous universe.

Becauase unfortunately, that includes a large number of the toxic internet troll community that is more vocal on these forums than almost any other group.

Yeah, I like Baskets, Comedy Bang! Bang!, Another Period, Crashing, Lady Dynamite, Difficult People, Broad City, Silicon Valley, all the On Cinema stuff... too many to mention really. I saw Asperger's Are Us when they came to London last year, best live sketch comedy I've ever seen. Why do you ask?

Thing is, bug reports, suggestions and feedback have already been levied. Nothing has changed. There's really nothing left to talk about in regards to this specific situation. It's either not going to get fixed or it just isn't priority.

Wow, none of that seems funny at all.... unsurprising.

So you haven't heard of any of those shows, you just think they 'seem' unfunny from the titles? Do you like any contemporary comedy at all? Who's your favourite comedian - I mean, if you really had to choose been Jeff Foxworthy and Larry the Cable Guy?

The game is dumb and illogical in many ways, OP.
Much of it is due to the almighty BGS and it's many mysteries.
I was recently looking for the coveted Data Mined Wake Exceptions, also known as DWE. So I head to the nearest high population system in famine. Check the system map for the controlling faction of the main station in famine.
Want to take a wild guess what the station's two major exports are? Grain and Animal Meat.
Utterly moronic.

Two of Ethiopia's major exports are fruit & veg and animal meat so yeah, it's obviously impossible for such an economy to experience famine. :D I mean there is plenty of dumb stuff in the game but that's not really part of it.

Human beings? More like forum trolls... the guy seems useless. I just complained about him, i'm sure others did too. Id rather read what the OP has to say about the game, than the same old nonsense trash from the same old regulars. At least if he brings up the issue, it might get fixed.

What exactly did you complain about though? Still no one has told me how what was said is insulting, but now you're off to get him in trouble, for what? Are you just someone who likes their moderators to be cold robots whose only interaction with the community is to ban, add infractions, or close threads? They're allowed to talk in a non-moderator capacity instead of being forced to create an alternate account, which is what would happen if they were only allowed to be stale at all times. I have a feeling if someone else had said it, you'd have just ignored it, but because this person has moderator as a title, even though not posting as one, you want to punish him for a mild poke at the usage of a word.

I really don't get it. He's not on border patrol acting like a jerk to citizens when he should be protecting your country in a professional manner at all times, he's just a regular person on the forum having a laugh or discussing things like everyone else.

Yeah I have yet to receive a paycheck! Poor indeed....

At least you're keeping the slide slow Jenner, shows you're at least doing something.

I saw Asperger's Are Us in Birmingham, really funny and it was great to chat with them afterwards.

Here ends the off topic section of this thread.

Back on topic - cut the sniping, stick to the topic. The topic was not each other and it was not moderation.

Yeah, I don't like planetary scan missions, either. Sad to see you deciding to stay out, OP. I stick around because while some tasks are either tedious or just horribly put together, I have too much fun zipping around in my space ship. It's hard to say no to that, as Elite: Dangerous does a solid job of making that aspect of the game work great. Maybe try something else, like cargo missions? I love a good long haul mission, where you crank up the radio and push the hammer down.

Ethiopia
Population: 102.40 million (2016)
GDP: $87.30 billion USD (2018)

Famine
This faction is currently unable to source a sufficient supply of food for its members. If the situation goes on for much longer they run the risk of incurring mass illness or civil unrest.

You really trying to defend illogical nonsense in a video game using a country that hasn't experienced famine in over 30 years? I'm sure when they were experiencing famine and crop failure, they weren't exporting anything.
Maybe Somalia would have been a better example.

That isn't a very moditoraty thing to say is it?

At FD it is.

Swoop the ESO forums for mod activity and I will eat a load of biowaste if you find even one.

Its very par for course here cmdr, probably a symptom of underlying subc knowing that this ship is in full sink mode and has been post 1.5

Don't all these missions state this activity could be considered illegal ?

If so you were warned OP, Choose to ignore that and the consequence is on you regardless of how you interpret the logic behind it. And as another poster suggested, it could be explained as a result of internal tensions inside that faction as far as logic goes.

I agree on the surface target jumping around though, I never really understood the reason for that. Some sort of sensor jamming maybe ? If so it's not very effective other than to delay you for a few moments.

I like the ones where a system authority ship is sitting next to the base. Not doing anything, just sitting there. I've seen them nose in, just above the ground, and totally buried with the only way you know they are there is you see their icon.
They are inactive until you trespass then you get a system authority ship fully running, coming after you.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about, and then you can all insult me, call me names, tell me I'm an idiot, whatever.

It's not nearly as much fun when you give us permission.

Also, yeah, the situation you described is pretty stupid, but I don't think the whole game is stupid.

Psychotic? Sure.

Stupid? Sporadically.

Yeah, if you had been around since 2014 you would acknowledge how the game has changed, things went bad and things got better, overall it is much better now than before (IMO). I'm keeping my intro short on purpose.

Here's what happened: I go to Sanuma, and get a mission for a minor faction in Dunyach Gateway. [...] I pull up next to it, and... I can't scan the data link now, because I'm under fire, so the mission is basically over

This is what I don't quite understand, specially since 2014 this hasn't changed that much. Lets not get into the ownership of the outpost discussion. Not all italian businesses belong to the italian goverment, and I'm sure if the spanish goverment decides to send an random spanish person to scan my spanish datapoints I'd get as mad as the NPC.

Now, quitting the game because you can't scan a nav beacon without getting shot sounds very much like quitting the game because the police is scanning you while smuggling goods for a minor faction. With all we have suffered since the first days in ED to reach the current game now, I think this is a very cheap excuse. I could understand you are angry, mad, tired, bored, frustrated or any other reason tho.

Something old players had an advantage on top of new players is the experience to understand how broke the mission system is, which rarely or very rarely affects us anymore. I have the feeling that the problem you try to point out is not the mission itself, which isn't that horrible, but the feeling of 'oh no, I'm going to start collecting bounties so I'll have to go to the IF again to clean my status which I don't think adds anything to my gameplay since I just wanted to do a simple scan and get paid'. Is this any more accurate?
