Endless Steps?!! You Just Can't Fix This?!

What's to fix? It's actually a transition screen where it handshakes a new instance and redraws the screen from ship to person. How long it takes actually varies depending on how many shows you're dl'ing and how many shows you're watching while playing ED. Most days my ancient rig and Aussie internet does the transition in seconds. On a good day it's even instant. 
Endless steps is the on foot equivalent of the blue tunnel in supercruise. It's the same cause too. The game in some way or another fails to transition you into the next instance. At least the endless steps more seldomly result in the ultimate somecolorship server error than the blue tunnel does.

If its affecting you persistently, maybe raise a ticket with FD. Get them to take a look at your netlogs.

This is not a constant problem, but frustrating! I never get the blue tunnel anymore. That was a problem for me back when FC were released, but have not seen a Blue Tunnel forever now. That's good! But this black screen with stairs is, at least, once or more per session. Maybe some days I don't get it, but I get it enough to where it's a pain in the butt. It's just a quick log to menu and back in, but I just can't see why they can't fix this. It's gotta be on their end as I have gig Internet, so not a matter of me having slow connection issues. It's just random frustration. I don't know of ANY other game that goes to a black screen on scene change like this. But then, Elite Dangerous has a TON of crap I've never seen in any other game, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised or angry. Comes with the territory

I think he means that when exiting the ship it goes black and you hear footsteps until you teleport outside, in this case you never arrive outside but are stuck in the black until you get an error.
FWIW, I've played quite a lot on foot and think I've only had this once, normally I have no problem with this on my system.

I always thought it was an escalator module to enter your ship that got switched on reverse by mistake and the pilot didn’t realise
That's exactly it, but I never get an error... or maybe I will if I wait long enough. I have let it go for a few minutes before just to see what would happen and it just continues with the stair step sounds and black screen... seems to never end. Quick menu log and back in fixes it. Maybe this is just not a huge player wide issue, and that's why they've never fixed it, but knowing FDEV's rep, I doubt they know how

IME it was fixed for a while but seems to have returned with update 12.
It could be that it never ends, I seem to recall a coloured snake but I might be mistaken..That's exactly it, but I never get an error... or maybe I will if I wait long enough. I had this happen to me twice in one play session in the last few days before U12 launched, but not since. I blamed server instability because Frontier was doing something in anticipation of U12, but that was just a guess on my part. Fortunately, it hasn't happened to me since U12 rolled out.
The endless steps thing has never happened to me, the blue tunnel in SC, almost never, when it does it's usually my internet dropping out, which happens sometimes, maybe I have been lucky and it hasn't dropped out during foot to shop transition yet, or foot to SRV transition.
There are steps? I thought that was just my holo-me stumbling around in the dark, looking for the light switch.

Having just got a new more powerful machine to run the game on and the capability to leave all that other stuff including forums running on the old machine the walk in the dark has gone from around 15 steps to barely a flicker of black, it is actually taking some getting used to.What's to fix? The black steps screen is completely random. I can be playing for a minute or ten hours. I will say I have not gotten this black screen once since I posted this! Kinda odd but not complaining!
Here's a pic of all the goodies, the only thing I changed was the Sabrient drives to WD's. So, I would highly doubt it's the computer.
