Newcomer / Intro Energy Weapons Running Low on Energy

So I assumed the fix to running out of energy quickly would be buy a bigger power plant, which I did, and it hasn't helped. I've got 2 pulse lasers and 2 burst lasers (both gimbaled), but they aren't doing enough damage to my targets(they run out of energy fast and the targets jump away). Can anyone advise me? I'd like to avoid having to buy ammo, if possible.

Power plant won't help you with how much energy is transferred to the ship. It's how much energy your ship overall can produce for your machines.
For your problem only Power Distributor will provide more energy to the weapons.

Imagine it like this, Power plant is a barrel full of water, the bigger the barrel the more water you can carry for more people you have with your self. But it's up to how big of pipes you have connected to it when it comes to how much you can take from the barrel. ( weird analogy i know ).

Multi-cannon and cannon ammo is cheap; if you were running cannons, you'd have made far more from the bounties than it would have cost to buy ammunition - you're talking about cr200 for a Sidewinder (bounty cr1-3K) up to cr2-3K for an Anaconda (bounty cr60-140K). Power management becomes a hell of a lot less stressful. Once the shields are down, pips to SYS and ENG (and 0.5 pips to WEP) and blow holes in the hull.

The maths don't lie.

Additionally, gimballed lasers suck - 25% less damage and they're largely ineffective over 1.5KM. I'd suggest:

2 x fixed beam lasers
2 x gimballed multicannon

You can choose which you want on the medium hardpoints and which you want on the small hardpoints. Personally, I use beams on the medium points and gimballed cannon (not multi-cannon) on the small. It makes light work of shields on most ships, and the DPS of the cannon makes up for its light weight and slow fire rate.

I'd only go for all energy weapons if I were exploring and knew I wouldn't be seeing any stations for a while.

you can also allocate extra power to weapons while in ship, but that sacrifices power from either engine power or shield regen rate.

The sad truth is, that the days of firing a laser for an extended period of time (as it was in Elite 2 and 3) are over.

I've run both a Viper and a Cobra with the best power setups available in game at the moment. "A" grade power plants and distributors... but a pair of class 2 lasers of still stops firing after a short while and needs to cool off. I'd really like to see the energy cooling booster from Elite 2 and 3 make a comeback.

Just a tip: If you are dependent on gimballed weapons to hit your targets, don't use beams unless you are able to stay very close to your target. Use pulse lasers instead. They can fire more often and are much more precise on their gimbals than beams are.

Still, during combat you will need a non-energy backup weapon such as multicannons, and keep 4 pips to weapons so the lasers don't cook off too soon.
