ENG boost necessary for exploration?

I've looked around the forum a bit but I couldn't find anything related to this.

So, I am currently outfitting my Anaconda for a 5k Ly trip to unlock Professor Palin. So my question is; Is the thruster boost you get from the ENG capacitor really necessary when it comes to exploration? Couldn't I just get the lowest tier/weight power distributor to max my jump range since I will be spending most of my time in supercruise anyway?

I don't really plan on visiting any planets unless I have to in order to get materials for AFM Refills and such, do I need the ENG boost to properly maneuver planets?

The ENG pips are only used in real space, not SC. If you aren't going to roam around on planets then there is no point in boosting any of the parts of the capacitor.

All depends on your skill level. Boost is not necessary if you avoid making mistakes. For general flying over planets you wont need boost, if you screw up and need that extra thrust you'll regret not installing a higher rated dist.

The jump range gain you get from installing a non boost distributor is minimal, since you are only doing 5000Ly, you are better off equipping a boost capable dist.

no you dont need it while in the black, and not going to planets with higher g's.

altho it might be handy being able to boost when you come back, would be a shame to get blown up because of that.

It's the latter why I always carry the best distro' possible.

Dont need it most the time...only fer the odd wee mistake landing on high g planets and stuff, I probably wouldnt have a distributor fitted at all ^

Highest class D rated cap with mods is my personal fave for explorers. But I like having an edge on survivability, whether it be when returning to any kind of civilised space, or high G planets. I am not going to pretend I have the patience to navigate around several G planets in a way that lets me land like a feather.

You get what you put into your ship. Lowest ability modules to shave every last iota of mass? You're going to get the lowest ability ship in everything but jumping. That's fine if it suits you, but if you do crash it somewhere, blame no-one but yerself ;)

Remember you can set a specific pip-setting, then disable the entire PD as it will 'remember' the settings. You just cant change it until you re-enable it. It wont help with the weight, but it does with power requirements. :D

Oh wow you guys responded fast o.o I'm cooking lunch right now so I'll read all your replies while I eat. Thanks all! o7

I disable anything I dont need and wont use...until its needed. Cool running and all that. Thing is that having it fitted at all is extra weight and crashing, even on higher g planets, is down to player error...simple solution being dont make mistakes and if ye do, then keep practicing until ye stop making them ^

I make sure I can boost because the extra speed makes a lot of difference when surveying small planets for geysers. Why go cruise at 350m/s when I can permaboost to 450m/s?

I regard being able to boost as essential for exploration. Not just for planetary landing, but also escaping if you are interdicted on the way back. Most explorer ships have paper shields with light hulls and not being able to boost just makes you a sitting duck.

Dropping the module size and going for A-rated can often work out better (both for weight and performance).

It's not an "in some cases" or "often works" affair.

Lower class/A-rated is always slightly heavier, and always has slightly better performance.

If I cared about performance enough to ask for a small increase in cap size, I'd be running the best distributor I could.

On this point of escaping when on the way back...common sense would dictate that one would keep a different ship parked at a previously setup and well researched outpost that is found on the very far edge of the bubble. To try using an exploration only build in the bubble is just asking fer trouble...thats what cobras and dolphins are for ^

I'd say fit the smallest Power Distributor, that will allow you to boost, and make sure your thrusters aren't too weak aswell.

Mainly, because the last thing you want on return is to but stuck crawling along, unable to boost, and under attack.
And secondly, if you do decide to check out some planets on the way, boost can get you out of some serious trouble.
Blasting along for 5000ly is actually really dull, but if you make a trip of it, you won't even notice.

I just flew 6500~ly to the outer rim, stopping by the Monkey Head Nebula, and a few others in between.
Then checkout out the view from 1800ly up.
Then found a small neutron highway to get me 2500ly closer to home, incredibly quickly. Lol

And nearly got stuck. :D

I barely noticed the distance I was covering.

I put an engine focused distributor in all of my exploration ships. I prefer to boost a lot when exploring planet surfaces, and the mod allows me to boost much more often, so I put it on. You certainly don't need it, but it's very nice IMHO, and since I never carry weapons on exploration ships it doesn't hurt anything to have it.
