Engineer Relationship - Exploit? SPOILER!

Engineer Relationship - Exploit? SPOILER! (False Alarm)

I discovered this last week whilst 'developing' my relationship with Tod...

On my initial visit for upgrades, I was a total noob and had no idea how things worked with engineers, but was fortunate in that I had a truckload of materials in my cargo. I just continued to re-roll until I found something I liked.

My next visit was a little different. I took time to read the information on screen (RTFM) and learned that your relationship develops with each purchase. Discarding the upgrade has no effect. So this time around, I installed each upgrade offered, regardless of the stats, in order to boost my relationship.

If you have enough materials, keep the re-rolls coming until your relationship hits maximum. It will happen sooner if you keep rolling on a higher grade of mod. Nice.

The result of my last visit?

2x Grade 5 Experimental 2F MCs
2x Grade 3 Experimental 1E FCs

It's not an exploit or glitch it's just the currency the engineers use to perform the work. The more you spend the more they like you :)

You just need to spend on the roll - he doesn't care if you install it. Or are you saying you get more rank by installing dud rolls??

Yeh, I don't get that either, I have boosted my rank rejecting all the junk rolls. Now you are saying install all the junk for a bigger boost?

No, just that your rank with them improves regardless of if you install it or not.

While mats are free some of them can take alot of time to gather so it certainly isn't a totally free way to rank up with them :)

Yeah, pretty fast to level up engineers using Lvl 1 discard, then lvl 3 when available. No need to apply and certainly not an exploit.

Seems to me that both DISCARD and TRY AGAIN will gain no rank with the engineer. Only APPLY will increase your rank.

Confirmed to be wrong. I did it similar to you but I discarded everything. I grew up in ranks with many engineers within only 2 days. No need to apply.
BUT - you gain ranks quicker if you roll higher rated (e.g. Level 3 instead of level 1). STill one usually has plenty of grade 1 items so use them first.

I was able to raise almost all first time visited enginers to level 4 at least while I was there. Only some lvl 5 I was missijng materials anyways to I wasnt interested to waste time.

It's still 3 per level of the previous level, right? (meaning three rank2 modifications opens rank3 and three rank3 opens rank4)

It was when I was running about upgrading stuff a week or two ago.

It does work like this yes. Most engineers will have a couple of mods available that have no use to you but you have plenty of materials for, use these to boost rank up when hunting for special effects. Also remember that some special effects just aren't worth it, they come with hidden nerfs that can sometimes cause more harm than good.

Check this thread out before you commit to a special effect.

Basically you can keep re-rolling the lower-level rolls dozens of times (if you have the mats) and your relationship with the engineer will still improve. The relationship will improve faster if a CMDR rolls for higher-level mods but that is not necessary to eventually reach level 5.

Well - to be fair - you re still engaging in their service and spending materials to do so - so why not?

You do get a faster advancement if you buy higher ranked upgrades though...just a note.

Actually it's quite hard to find specific materials. I want to upgrade my fsd jump range.

Looked for Arsenic on a planet quite a while (finally found something), but wasn't able to find a single chemical manipulator...

You should check the forum (or even google), lots of threads on finding stuff.

Really don't know why people struggle with Arsenic & other planet based mats though: do you have a Detailed Surface Scanner? That will tell you material %'s in the System view, if a planet has 2+% Arsenic then the drop rate should be ok.

I've done that, was on a planet with 2,7% arsenic. Still took quite a while to get some (the spawn points for materials were quite rare). But this chemical manipulator.... Checked dozens of USS, nothing.
