Engineered DSS still shows unavailable after unlocking it.

I guess it's just the modded kit (introduced relatively recently) that's a single-shot materials purchase, rather than the material unlock used for all the regular tech broker kit.

Maybe.

Anyway, it looks like it's working the way it's supposed to. Stop buying more ... unless you want more. If you can't see the ones in your storage, I guess relog? They should be there.

Yes, consistency is not a word at Frontier.

As a retired Validation Engineer, it bugs me to no end that they allow these bugs to exist without any difference between one item and another. So I'll continue to "waste" FD's time with bug reports. Pure idiocy.

Not a bug, if you persist in reporting things you know aren't bugs then your future proper bug reports will probably be ignored, as a retired validation engineer you know that is a bad thing!

I traded for more scraps and unlocked the EDSS again. Was able to purchase one. Tried to purchase another and was unable to. The Tech Broker changed back to Locked again. Photo attached.
Video of successful unlock and purchase too big to post here: Video
"Unlocking this will add one detailed surface scanner to your storage."

I don't think it can be any clearer than that. The problem here exists entirely between the keyboard and the chair.

Yeah, and I think the problem is credits have become so ubiquitous and easily earned that they no longer have value as "money," placing a monetary value on something effectively makes it free, so we are moving to a situation where common stuff, basic unengineered stuff is basically just free stuff, and you pay for advanced stuff with the new "money=mats."

"Unlocking this will add one detailed surface scanner to your storage."
It's actually "Unlocking this will allow you to purchase and add one detailed surface scanner to your storage." Because you still have to purchase it.

So is "Engineered" the key? If it says "Engineered" then you have to unlock and buy each time you want one?

The pre-engineered FSD is the same, but Guardian items like the FSD booster and other experimental human and guardian modules appear to be unlock for unlimited access. So that may be the case although I can't say for sure since I haven't checked every single one.

Not really, because you don't purchase it in the classic sense (with credits). The "unlock" is the "purchase" (with materials) at which point it becomes available in Storage. Whether in lore this is an exchange of goods by the Tech Broker, or they make the thing with the bits you give them, is unclear. Use your headcanon of choice, I guess. Either way they end up in Storage, which is why you see them in the Outfitting screen. But the credit cost to install them is zero, because you already own them.

Not quite, because the Sirius Heat Sink Launcher and Modified Mining Laser are also exchanged for materials each time.

If you are logged into an INARA account the page at https://inara.cz/elite/techbroker/ differentiates between those items that are unlocked and those that are "made to order" as it were. But this distinction is only visible if you're logged in, presumably because INARA tracks which items are unlocked on an account-by-account basis. Just to muddy the waters further, INARA refers to non-unlockable items as "Purchasable". But at least you can easily see which is which.
