Engineering RNG

You don't need to upgrade a module to rank 5 to get to engineer rep 5.

Rep 5 will probably arrive when the first module is about halfway into G4. Or, you could upgrade three modules to the top of G3 for about the same result. The G1-G3 materials are the ones that basically show up just for playing the game, so this should be possible for most players from spare materials.

You can do it entirely with around 300 G1 upgrades if you want and never use a material harder to obtain than sulphur, though that's only a sensible approach in very specialised cases.
Ye, my mistake, you don't need it to upgrade to grade 5, but you need to upgrade more modules to grade 3 to lvl up an engineer to rank 5. I just upgraded 4 lasers to grade 3-4 yesterday just to have rank 5 at Broo Tarquin so that pin can work. And guess what? I only needed 3 lasers actually, and changed upgrade on 4th because i was short on materials with al those stupid RNG's. So i have an useless laser just becasue this "feature"

Of all the things to complain about, now it's the number of rolls it takes? In a year's time we'll be seeing threads 'why isn't my sideweinder fully engineered when I start the game?? FD YOU SUCK!'

The problem with engineering is gathering, if that weren't such a chore, illogical and frustrating, whether a g5 mod took 4 or 8 rolls would be neither here nor there. Having said that, I too would prefer it was predictable, but I can definitely live with the small remaining random factor if gathering is fixed properly.

As a casually addicted Elite-o-hoolic clocking in 2-3hrs a day on this game (approx.average since december `14) I'd say as of current state of the engineers (and all related) it is only the HGE mechanic I have complaints about. Also I've never used the material/encoded/mined traders, and I've never been short of the material I needed by just "playing my game"
I've got plenty of other complaints with this game, but another thread another rant 😄

MDH

P.S then again, I'm not that guy that needs to win the game over a weekend (patience, young padawan)

Wouldn't say no to free stuff. I have no inclination to engineer anyway. I'm even modest - I'd only need the level to bring me back up on par vs AI. That's not too much to ask.

Just started working on engineering my ships, and imagine my surprise when I saw that the stats for the upgrades are RNG-based. Are you gently caressing kidding me? Why? There is literally no reason for it. I've been playing for a few weeks, and I've got to say, Frontier are some of the worst developers I've seen when it comes to making their game more enjoyable. PUBG's Bluehole wasn't this bad. Given the amount of grinding that goes into engineering, having it be RNG-based is just plain idiotic. Spending hours farming for mats only to get a bad roll is extremely discouraging. I know this is coming from the same devs who leave mission-breaking bugs (See half the goddamn game) in the game for years because they're too lazy to fix them now that they're already getting money, but this is straight up sadistic.
I used to be as ed off about the engineers as you and then i got resigned to it and now i just dont play very much, except maybe to say high to some of my squad on discord.
You might as well get used to it. Frontier had a great game and then ed all over it with the engineers and they seem to be perfectly happy with that and with the games current and ongoing state.
Their object is to keep us playing so we buy store crap and they think the engineers will do that. Prove that they have underestimated player intelligence and dont give them any more money.

It's way less then the RNG before.
Before you didn't have a guaranteed advance, you could've ended with a roll that was significantly worse then the roll before.
So, the "new" system is already an improvement.
The idea is to improve your ships while playing the game, not insta-G5 everything in one go. You basically fly to the engineer, put the first grade in
and pin the blueprint, add experimentals and upgrade as often as you get materials.
Thats the worst way to engineer. You powergrind the mats first using exploits and semi-secret methods that have yet to be nerfed and then engineer everything in one go. And it still is a pain even with mat exploits.

Different scenarios will have ships that drop different material types. I prefer anarchy systems with tourist beacons (a stupid, deadly combination tbh) where I can camp out in my G5 rated vette and destroy passenger ships and have at least 9 limpets running full time. I will say that, since the most recent update, the passenger ships won't engage, they will flee. In the past you could have two at a time blow up next to you since they are stupid and try to engage with their small pew pew and risk/lose all the lives on board. Then I can go to CNBs and collect other types, or drop into convoys (funerals, military, etc... ) and kill those ships as well ( in anarchy, unless you don't care about notoriety). They will have even different materials.

Dav's Hope is cool, but I hate relogging to do anything. It just feels stupid.

How do you mean, "worst"? Your method sounds like less fun.
Whats less fun is waiting months while having to constantly stop for mats and equip collector limpets when you could just spend a day of grinding. Not everyone enjoys having to do surface missions and take detours for raw materials constantly, stopping after every kill to scoop up g3 mats and scanning every ship in the game. I would rather just grind than turn the things I do in game for fun or bgs or pp into a less intense version of grinding.

OK, straightforward disagreement then; people are different. I would never grind in a game.

Dav's sucks. The materials that spawn there are too easy to find in too many other places. The materials that really matter never spawn there, and the exchange rates are lousy when trading materials.

I've said since the beta that engineering progression needs to be far more linear and far not RNGesus based. A simple, eloquent system like this:

G1 to 100% - 2 Upgrades
G2 to 100% - 3 Upgrades
G3 to 100% - 4 Upgrades
G4 to 100% - 5 Upgrades
G5 to 100% - 6 Upgrades

I've made as many as 22 G5 upgrades to reach 100%. That's just FRELLING ridiculous. That first time you get a .1% improvement, it stops being fun.
It was far worse in the beta, where it was possible to get upgrades as low as .001%, resulting in reaching 100% of a grade taking as many as 60 attempts, so they did improve it, marginally.

Thank you for the helpful attitude, but I still disagree with the time aspect. Especially since I already have engineered AI on my rear and would rather have my engineering done now and not in 3 months. I wouldn't mind so much without the stupid bulletsponges, but there we are.
Good grief, you never stop do you? Are you a broken record? Same rubbish over and over again..... 😮

Yeah, the state of HGEs and crystalline shards in Colonia did wonders to my OCD 😆
Just got into farming HGE's and I've gotta that this is some terrible design. A very rare mat that can only be gotten from a rare USS? Kind of annoying. A very rare mat that can only be gotten from a rare USS in an equally rare system state? Idiotic game design.

So... Your forum name. Who are you really?

On a related note, played a few rounds of PUBG again and oh boy was I wrong about FD being worse than Bluehole. First game I got killed by a dude ten feet away who'd been sprinting around in a building making zero noise.
Sounds like he used silent running, lol
