Enhanced Performance Thrusters

Do I need any special permits or unlocks to buy the EPTs or is all I need the money and to be in one of the (few) stations that sells them? I take it they're not available at Shinrata?

They're only available at Farseer Inc. in Deciat and Palin Research Centre in Maia so you have to get access to one or other of those engineers first.

I've been meaning to ask about these thrusters.

Are they any good for combat and agility or is it all straight line speed? I wanted to fit one on a combat Viper III without sacrificing turn/pitch and lateral thrust.

I know many have built racers using these but I've not heard about them being used on combat ships.

Thanks

They are power hungry and run quite hot, so if your weapon setup takes that into account, you can build quite a fun to fly combat ship.

Like frank said they take a fair amount of juice to power and have a tendancy to run hot , have to take care while fuel scooping or running a build that drains the capacitor quickly as this will shoot your temps up even higher but my god they are alot of fun .. it has an overall effect when engineered but much is just raw speed, a courier light build is a joy with some well engineered drives.

Edit .. they also hate added weight so a trim build is a must if you want to keep the benefits of using them. Otherwise just go with the normal drives.

I have a set of 3A's on my Imperial Courier. It's a fun little combat ship, with 3 Force Shell, Long Range cannons on it.

I love blasting enemies into rocks and watching them break, or running faster than they can think if things take a turn for the worst to give my shields a chance to recover.

Other than that, their usefulness is somewhat limited due to their heat and power demands.

Could they be engineered with clean drives to minimise the heat issue?

Obviously you don't get the same speed increase as using DD5 but would that be viable?

Edit: I'm just playing around in coriolis and wow....they are power hungry!

Thanks for the detailed info.

On balance I think I'll pass...DD5 on a Viper III is plenty fast for combat and the heat/power issues would create too much of a compromise.

If I ever build a racing ship...they'll be top of the list.

They're extremely power-hungry and have low Optimal Mass (both of which get worse with engineering). To get the most out of them, you not only need to engineer them pretty well, you need the rest of your ship to be a more-or-less Lightweight build. Anything else and you're probably better off with standard thrusters.

All that said... I have a Courier that'll boost to 790 and that's not even great engineering rolls.

So the systems (Deciat etc) where these are available are permit-locked, are they? If one buys these from the normal outfitting screen and is not engineering them at all why do you need access to the engineer? Or do you buy them from somewhere other than the normal outfitting screen?

So you didn't even bother reading the answers?

Wise-, eh?

I haven't bothered with the engineers, so I have no idea whether 'having access to' them means the entire system is locked or whether it's just some greyed-out menu within a station's services screen. And I don't really understand why you'd buy a module from a screen other then the outfitting one, if that's how it works. If you feel like typing anything helpful knock yourself out, otherwise you can bait someone else.

Deciat is not permit-locked. However you must meet the requirements to meet the Engineer in order to even request docking at their bases. I don't remember if you also need to meet their secondary requirement to buy from the Engineer's Outfitting or not - I've had all the Engineers unlocked and at Grade 5 for more than 8 months.
