Enhanced Xeno Scanner not scanning

I'm trying to collect Caustic Tissue Samples from Caustic Generators in the Maelstrom.
I have an Enhanced Xeno Scanner bound to button 1 (right mouse button) in a fire group. I approach a Caustic Generator, once its targettable I target it (by pressing T) and press button 1... nothing happens. There's no arc above the target, and no scan occurs.
What am I doing wrong? Why does the scanner do nothing when I press the button assigned to it? Should it work this way?
I did once manage to get a scan to work, but I have no idea what I did differently and now the scan does not trigger. I tried analysis and combat mode with no effect.

How close are you? I haven't used the new scanner, but I think it has a range of 2km.

Have you deployed your hardpoints? Like Datalink Scanner, works only with deployed hardpoints...

Ahhh thanks that may be it, the one time it worked was after I blew one up with my beam laser.
Seems arbitrary what needs hardpoints deployed and what doesn't.

Yes thanks need to deploy hardpoints to use the scanner. Successfully got my 5 caustic tissue samples and other mats now.
