Enough with the jumpy authorities

Can we PLEASE get a reworking of NPC AI, so that a single shot delivered to their shields (typically the result of them flying directly into your line of fire, when you are shooting another ship), doesn't equal an immediate bounty of 200cr, which in turn equals an immediate NPC response of "BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!!"

Thank you; that is all.

You shot a cop. What else did you expect? They kill you for loitering and ignore some shield damage? Naaah, in space nobody hear your complaints.

- I'm sorry mister policeman, I didn't wanted to, it was a... *Booom!*

Try intervening in an armed standoff in the US and see what happens when you accidentally shoot a member of a swat team.

It maybe a game but the law is the law in this game :)

I could handle the accidental bounties if the rules were standard for everyone. Earlier a security ship was behind me using the cannon that fires flak. It was firing it over me, peppering the back of my shield with part of its shot, a few times. It then proceeded to over-take me and fly into my laser beams setting off the entire fleet of security in the area to suddenly want to kill me. Convenient that they ignored the few hits it did to my ship first.

Hexen, that made me laugh and it's true.

As annoying as it is, when you get some drunken cop fly right in front of your salvo, you expect to pay the price.

I'm still laughing . . . . but, but, but BOOM!

If a cop is firing through you, face it, you are in the way, you are not police or military, you are a nobody and you are trying to do their job for them.
Its no wonder they get pi55y?

Erm the Feds have jurisdiction, you don't, life in ED isn't fair.

It's a pain but, I just bring in my guns, boost away and get out of dodge as quick as my cobra can take me. Then jump to a system with a safe haven platform, pay my fine and chalk it down to it being one of those sorties. Some times things go wrong, when it does bug out and live to fight another day.

Everyone trying to bring up "Try to shoot cop irl" argument, try comparing these 2 cases and realize how stupid it is to compare them.

1 shot to shields does close to no damage.
It would be equivalent to throwing a small pebble at an officer, or a stone at the officers house while he's inside, in both cases it would probably go unnoticed.
And even if he did notice, he wouldn't try to rip your head off and put a bounty on you.

"Oh but you're just a civilian there bothering police work!"

In Elite, bounty hunting is a legal trade, so I'm just as much doing my job as they are theirs.
So either we should get the rights to kill a cop that shoots us by mistake, or we should get a fix for this issue.

"try to watch your fire!"
I am, but no one is perfect.
The police in the other hand, don't even have the code for it and thus can carve my ass off with whatever they see fit.

Disagree - you are blindly agreeing with the decreed order without even thinking if this is as the Creator intended. In all other game scenarios, you will not be randomly shot at by the security forces.

Yeah, those cops probably polish their shields all day long. And woe on those unfortunate to scratch them! Apparently we know nothing about cops and their shields. How can a cop look at his buddies with scratched shield? That's just a disgrace! People got fired for dust in the cockpit or sneezing too hard and you allow some lollygagger to put a dent in your shield? Preposterous!

Alternatively, you know there are cops in the area, it's a dogfight, the cops are brutal unforgiving ${expletive of choice}. Work on your combat skills to widen your spacial awareness of not just your target (easy to get focused) but to have an eye on the ships in your field of view, where other craft are on the radar and ... this is critical... taking your finger off the trigger when one is likely to cross your path.

Yup, I've blasted the cops, rapidly followed by a swift exit from the area before they decide it's time for a twofer and back to somewhere I can slam quickly into dock and pay off the fine (remembering to pay it before I do anything else to avoid being nuked on exit).

The behaviour of the cops fits with the general feel of the galaxy, the system authorities and galactic power groupings are intent on holding onto what they have, expanding into what the others have and enforcing their laws with a brutality which seems to have been taken straight from various dystopian novels & the TSA manual.

Just dont fight in the high security area. Go Anarchy. Bounty Hunters in the civilised system is an abomination, let cops do their job.

We are needed, where no cop dares to go.

Hunt in Anarchies.

Though fire discipline is a good thing to learn, i have seen some pretty things happen. mostly the police jumping up in front of you from nowhere. when i'm shooting at something, i'm usually looking at what im shooting at not at my scanner for what might get in the way (and, in space... theres not much...)

The NPC's will gladly stick themselves in the crossfire. not shooting at a cop is one thing but jumping in front of a firing pulse laser is another.

Not quite

That might be true if the pebble was launched from a high powered catapult / sling, ie capable of doing significant / fatal damage if it hits an unarmoured part of the cop (the viper shields are down / weak). Also just throwing a pebble at a cop is going to get some response ranging from the "Oi!, get the hell out of here you ___" through "you're nicked sonny, enjoy prison food?" to "get the SWAT team down here!!!" depending on the scenario.

The scenario we're working is "cops are in an active firefight with a known hardened criminal" and "someone has performed an attack on us"

You're not bening randomly shot at, you're being shot, because you hit the fuzz. Deal with it, I do.

If you can't escape them then maybe it's time to change profession.

I live in Finland so neither one of those responses is possible.
The scenario we're working is that the AI flies and shoots like a limbless child and we're there to babysit them.

You're not bening randomly shot at, you're being shot be cause you hit the fuzz. Deal with it, I do.
More often than not, I am being chased by officers even tho I got no bounty or fines.

Look upon it as the macho world of the police. Imagine the abuse the police officer would get if he did not retaliate. He would be castigated by his colleagues, a laughing stock. Forced to leave the force by his own embarassment, isolated, depressed, forced to do courier runs for the rest of his life, back and forth for eternity, just because he didnt have the nounce to shoot the kid who scratched his shields....

Go out and find a cop. Now throw a stone/pebble at him/her. You will be taken down fast as its seen as an act of aggression. Maybe even shot if you live in such a country.

I'm finnish, the police don't care.
And im Swedish, and i know they care. I remember a friend flipping a cop off once (for fun), they took him in the car and drove him out to the forest and dropped him there. :D But throwing a stone at a police officer. Good luck with that. Sweden has nice cops (far from the US style) but they wouldnt be happy if you actually went aggressive towards them. Which throwing a stone is. And here we are talking about FIRING WEAPONS at them. "It just kissed their shield". When that was maybe lucky right? What if it was a railgun? It doesnt work that way.
