"Entirely different save profiles"

Just watched OA's latest, where he says that from the 29th November players will have entirely separate save profiles for Legacy and Live mode.

So, presumably, that'll mean you could travel to Colonia in Live mode, swap to Legacy mode and you'll still be in the bubble?
You could unlock a bunch of Engineers, complete the naval rank process or collect a heap of mat's in one mode and you'd need to do that all again in the other mode?

Seems, to me, that FDev had an opportunity to formalise the ability for players to swap between Odyssey and Horizons to do various things in a way they prefer but, instead, FDev will be forcing players to pick one mode and stick to it or have to repeat activities in both modes.

Also, would this not mean I'll have to pay upkeep on my FC in both modes, or risk playing in one mode for the first time in months and finding that my FC has been decommissioned???

This seems like truly bizarre choice for FDev to implement and I hope OA has misunderstood how these two modes will be segregated.

The announcement made it pretty clear that they will be separate games/saves, just like what they do with betas.

Has pros and cons, but was evidently the path of least resistance...which has long been the modus operandi when it comes to this game. No issues with maintaining compatibility and no need for compatibility updates.

Yes everything is separate. The same way if you duplicate a Word document the changes you make in one of the copies doesn’t happen in the other.

I think two things are driving this.

The first is practical & technical: As stated, FDev is not willing to maintain two versions of the same game for the purposes of "live services", i.e. narrative updates, CGs, etc.

BUT, the whole splitting game saves and not allowing progress in one mode follow to the other... Well, they clearly want players to choose a single mode to play in. Splitting saves forces that choice.
After the 29th, players will need to commit to one mode or the other--either ED 4.0/Odyssey or Legacy.

As buggy, grindy, and (IMO) un-fun as Odyssey is, I'll be sticking with legacy mode.

I'm saying this as someone who owns two copies of ED:O. (yeah, I know)

He's spot on...as are you. It's an odd choice for sure...unless their end game is to bin 3.8 and this makes it easier to uncouple it from 4.0. Which I suspect is the case.

Dunno what to think, TBH.

On the one hand, I almost wish they would just restrict people to the single, most recent, version of the game they have access to.
At least that'd make for a "clean break", so people would know where they are and move on.
OTOH, the best solution would have been to make the effort to create a profile-system that can accomodate all modes/versions.

Honestly, I'm probably just going to wait for U14 and then see which version of the game my friends decide to use and then I'll just stick to that version.
Most of 'em have Horizons so hopefully they'll use 4.0, which means I won't have wasted my money when I bought Odyssey.

Well, from Tuesday 3.8 and 4.0 will be entirely uncoupled, no need to make it easier, it's done - but I think this probably extends the life of 3.8 compared with the alternative, since it means that it genuinely won't need any further updates outside of exceptional circumstances and won't gradually accumulate bugs from the 4.0 servers being incompatible with it, or things from 4.0 savegames leaking into it, etc.

It gets their development somewhat back onto the track it was supposed to be on post-Odyssey - I was wondering how they were going to deal with "3.8 gets no more development but 4.0 does" without making any major changes basically impossible, and while I didn't expect them to do it this way, it makes sense and gives them the most freedom to develop 4.0 further. Which doesn't help if you're stuck on 3.8 for any reason, of course ... and it's the sort of change which definitely needed more notice.

As far as I understand it, this step is neccessary, because the BGS will change significantly with update 14 and would be completely incompatible with 3.8. Therefore they have to decouple it entirely and make live and legacy mode separate.

That was my point, though. Uncoupling now makes it easier to bin later, which speaks to your second point above. It does indeed extend the life of 3.8...but for how long is anyone's guess. I cant imagine being a console player and running across this game with it's accompanying description in the game store and buying it only to find out it was in it's last days and almost none of what was advertised was actually available.

The only reason we still have 3.8 at all is because 4.x didn't work on consoles. The original plan (before the Odyssey launch delays) was for everyone to be moved to 4.x.

The first indication that 3.8 might go away will be the stopping of new sales on consoles.

I agree it is a mess and I'm far from convinced that the story will be worth the trouble. Looking forward to seeing what they build on the foundations Odyssey/4.0 has laid down though :)

Just so I'm clear on this...

Horizons players will have the choice of Live mode or Legacy mode.
Horizons is now an integral part of the base-game so, basically, every ED player (on PC) will have the choice of Live or legacy mode.
Right?

So, basically, the choice (for Horizons players) is to stick with the zombified 3.8 and retain game-mechanics that are 2nd-nature and planet-tech that generates interesting terrain or switch to 4.0 and be forced to learn a bunch of new game-mechanics and accept the (generally) less interesting topography of Odyssey?

I'd like to think a lot of Horizons players will adopt 4.0 but I can't help thinking they'll be giving up a lot of the stuff they enjoy just for the privilege of remaining "current".

So here's a question: suppose a person has until this point played solely 3.8 and not 4.0 or EDO. In a year and a half from now they decide to buy EDO and "upgrade". What does the new commander start with? Whatever they had on 11-29-22?
