Elite / Frontier Epic Space Sims in Development: Thoughts?

1984 Elite defined space sims for years to come.
2003 Freelancer: Awesome multiplayer space battles!

I, for one, am hoping for a new genre defining multiplayer space sim which uses current gen pc graphics.

Potential Candidates:

Infinity: A massive procedurally generated universe sandbox.

Miner Wars: A fast paced space shooter in a fully destructible environment. This one is currently in closed beta.

Jumpgate Evolution: While the most promising looking, this game also seems to be progressing very slowly.

Evochron Mercenary: The latest iteration of Evochron. To be released this Autumn.

If you know of any other games in development which fit this category, please share.

tl;dr We need a new genre defining space sim. Here's a few that have potential. What are your thoughts?

It would be nice to set MMO by mmo games.
Sound nice checked it out it is a MMO, interrest killed off.

Are there any non MMO space games in production?

Gratuitous Space Battles is hillarious- the pilot communication thingie at the top of the screen is ace--"woah! That almost made me spill my beer..."

I think you're right about genre defining- like how Star Control 2/ Ur quan masters sits pretty much in its own genre.

My take on it: There needs to be a new example of an exploration/space combat/ maybe even a bit of running around and shooting things (a'la Mass Effect) all with a generous helping of self-referential humor- (again, see star control/Elite/Hitchikers guide to the Galaxy for the right kind of approach)

Less the high minded space-saga, more a begrudging acceptance of your tiny place in the vast and increasingly bizarre cosmos.

TL;DR: Elite 2 crossed with Ur Quan Masters where you can get out your ship and bimble about a bit on planetary surfaces. BAM- there's your game.

Evochron Mercenary is a sp game as well as online. The next one out the gate on the PC should Starpoint Gemini

In less you want to count the space levels of the new Halo game as one.

To me Mass Effect is the most close to Scifi shows. As you are a char. Wich has a space ship under his or her command going to places. And have off ship to bases or planets missions. Because in TV shows the focus is on the chars.
I think of shows like FireFly Farscape and startrek without the space combat.
So Mass effect you got a nice ship you can roam around in. But that's all.
So mass effect extended with a space ship combat system would be nice. The action can't be only planetside. But they do in a cutscene manner.

I think if you can roam around within a space ship, boarding gameplay in a FPS or TPS style is possible. Are there games offering this?
