Just wanted to thank Fdev for ranking quite highly in the equality stakes. 4 of the 10 powers being women. Started to notice lately how male-centric so much of media is and can't help but think that has a negative effect on girls when they are growing up.

After all - if you don't see galaxy dominating female icons in the media then maybe you won't consider dominating the galaxy as a career option

It's not the gender that counts, it's how well people perform their duty and tasks.

The majority of voters in elections are women and politicians firstly cater to women. There's more gender specific support programs for women too. Such as most domestic violence shelters still only help women, though men are 50% of domestic violence victims.
Various countries have a ministry for women, UN Women yet no male or gender neutral equivalent.

The suicide rate is 4 times higher for men, but this isn't getting much attention. If the suicide rate was 4 times higher for women it'd be all over the news. See more here.

What male centric media? The majority of TV viewers are women, the majority of TV shows cater to them. The majority of consumer spending is by women as well (70%+).

Did you ever notice the substantial amount of male bashing and misandy in TV shows, movies. Guys portrayed as baboons who can't do anything right.

Personally it should be all about character. i.e. Would you work for Margaret Thatcher given the rep she had.

Dangerous women should have there part to play.

As I understand, Japanese culture is almost the inverse, isn't it? With the exception of suicide rate, where men commit suicide only twice as often as women.

After many many centuries of women's oppression, finally they have got their fair chance in society. We see them as heads of big corporations, as ministers and prime-ministers of nations, as soldiers in wars etc. The bottom line is that both genders suck....equally

Yeah, and now that sexual orientation isn't such a big deal anymore, we're starting to swallow equally too.

Because women need to be shown and told what to do with their lives ? Are women incapable of making up their own minds without the need for an outside influence ?

Apologies - bad turn of phrase on my part. I agree with what you were saying. My problem is to do with portrayal. Maybe the best example I can give is girl's children's toys - ever tried to buy any that aren't total crap? 90% of them are pink plastic rubbish. Even Lego (which I completely love) has a terrible bias in the city stuff - where are all the female firefighters / police / scientists etc. Maybe one or two figures but most of them time they are male.

I'm just happy to see Frontier providing a wider range of female characters - both good and bad. Equally represented.

Apologies, maybe you read my questions badly, it's subjective at best and not meant to offend.. This could go south very quickly so i'll refrain from going into the finer details of my questions.


I just find the thought that women need to see other women doing it before they even think about just doing it themselves leaves a bad taste in my mouth, being a father of a young lady I do my up most to assure that she is not funneled into a pigeon slot just based on her sex, if she wants a transformer and a fire truck (which she has) then she is more than welcome to it.

Now all we need are some faction leaders who don't conform to the binary ......but thats another thread I think.

Fair fair Clearly people already do go beyond the society 'norm' and that's amazing. My (badly made) point was just if you grow up and don't see people of your gender / race in a particular role then maybe that has some negative impact on your aspirations. Frontier has it right and I wanted to applaud that.

Although what you are saying is absolutely true, is a kind of misleading too. Firstly, it's not the toy-stores that build a character rather than what feedback you get as a kid from your parents. Furthermore, women can practice whatever profession they like, but keep in mind that they are not as effective as men when muscles are required. I am 1.95m tall and 90kg. How many women can carry me on their back out of a burning house? The same stands for men when flexibility is involved. Being equall doesn't mean being the same
