Newcomer / Intro Escape from White Dwarf stars

How on earth does one escape from a White Dwarf star? I've travelled from the Bubble via Colonia to SagA* and all the way back, and this is the first time I have encountered a White Dwarf. Neutron stars are easy compared to this. Once in the Exclusion Zone, there is simply no escape, it seems. Every control input is negated; the nose always points back at the star.

One does not simply escape from a White Dwarf star....

Anyone have any ideas?

And with this question comes the other one: how do you fuel scoop a WD star, when the jets are in the Exclusion Zone?

PS I'm dead, btw...

They are a pain for sure. You can do it (well, I have escaped the few times I had been ensnared). Just got to turn to face away (use side views or else target the WD and manoeuvre so the space-compass circle is hollow and centred) then (making sure fuel scoop is unpowered first) engage supercruise, centre on the target for escape vector and fire a heatsink. Enjoy the sparks and smoke. ;)

Thanks Para, I'll give that a try. Maybe in my Sidewinder (just lost a Krait II, insurance 9MCr) ;)

Can I also ask, why do we unpower the fuel scoop?

Para Handy's advice is sound for escaping them. As far as scooping from them goes, you just have to approach it slightly differently.

Once you get out into the far reaches of regions like Mare Somnia, there are far more White Dwarf stars the Neutrons in the Neutron/WD Belts and so I have scooped from hundreds of them after my last exploration trip. If the jets seem to be protruding out of the exclusion zone only about the length of you ship then I really wouldn't bother unless it's absolutely necessary. If pointing directly away from White Dwarf is 0 degrees, then I enter the jet at no more than 20 degrees going very slowly, right near the end of the jet.. As close to "standstill" as I can be. Then you have slightly more control over your direction of travel, so you can fight to keep your ship near the edge of the jet and facing away from the star. It may take 2 or 3 goes to get charged.

Once you've done 20 or so then you get more confident with them and I'll enter at anything up to 45 degrees now without worrying about it too much. Slow and steady is the key.

.......

Can I also ask, why do we unpower the fuel scoop?

Because as the ship enters supercruise it starts to scoop fuel from a normal star or starts to supercharge from a WD (I think - see below) - so this causes more heat to be gained thus increasing the amount of heat damage you take - maybe enough to destroy you - so it is worth getting in the habit of unpowering the scoop when trying to escape from stars.

In truth I don't know if at a WD the scoop is problematic - any time I have needed to escape I have unpowered it. I got in the habit when exploring yonks ago and it was not unknown to get dumped into a star's exclusion zone on system arrival, these days there is supposed to be a mechanism that stops that happening at close binaries.

I never try to supercharge at WDs any more, the small gain is just not worth the increased difficulty of getting into the jet whilst avoiding the exclusion zone. Stick to neutron star supercharge, easier and more useful too.

And if you encounter one, immediately on emerging from jump put throttle to zero. Target it, and turn your ship away from it throttle up and get some distance from it. It has humongously big exclusion zone. Now you can manouver safely around it...And yes supercharging from them is dangerous and waste of time.
