Escape Pods / Megaship Interiors / Emote Binds / Mission variety / Colonia Engineering- last night's stream 19/10/2021

If you missed Zac's almost solo stream last night, with guest developer Dom Corner the Principle Programmer, you will have missed a few sneak peeks and confirmations.

  • Mission Variety
Dom Corner dropped in to tell us about how missions are evolving to include more variety. Including, for example, the target of an assassination mission could become spooked and flee to a waiting ship, bounty hunters could be immediately alerted to the death of a person and sent to interdict you, etc.
There will also be NPC mission targets for things like collection or delivery missions, so it won't always be a locked box, it might be a person you will need to locate.
- there was much more info on the way missions are made, and possibly more info on how they are being improved/changed).
  • Colonia Engineers
Zac touched on the four new Colonia engineers and that three of them do not offer the more unique upgrades found in the bubble. but they do offer all the other upgrades you would find in the bubble. There will however be one engineer (Yi Shen) who offers the unique upgrades. This is to balance the Colonia mini bubble and to make it a different experience.

  • Pointing Emote
He demonstrated how the tagging marker would be shown on the HUD, a diamond marker will show on your visor even if the target is behind scenery. a small marker also shows on your compass.
He said that they are already looking at improving the animations, an example brought up in the chat was so that they merge with the gun being drawn rather than holstering each time for example, and reiterated that this was the first implementation and that they will be open to feedback once it is into the game.

  • Megaship Interiors
We got a tour of the upcoming megaship interiors. These are intentionally less commercial looking than star ports, more utilitarian. There is an exterior window to look out from.

  • Emote Bindings
Dom (via Zac) also confirmed that all emotes should have a key bind option, so you can quickly use them. (this is not confirmed for update 8 but might make it in for then)

  • Zac mentioned that they are aware people have been requesting a "beer at the bar", "not right now" was the response, but it's great to hear some recognition that we would like more interactivity in the social spaces.

  • Escape Pods
Possibly the sneakiest tidbit was Escape Pods, during the tour of the Megaship Interiors we were told that there are escape pods modelled in the interiors, and that these are an interactable feature. They are implementing an escape pod that allows you to spawn at "your last safe location", (usually a space port). Megaships are not classed as a safe location (because they can move). The last safe location will most likely be a star port or base where you can get a ship/ earn some credits etc to continue your game, ie. to avoid being stranded.
This was reported to be Derrin [Halil]'s idea (senior Game Designer).

Anyway, I just wanted to say I enjoyed the reveals in the stream, I thought it was great to see some interactivity being added to the game, and that Zac was clearly aware of the type of info we are all looking for.
I'm still waiting for the performance to come down to a reasonable level, and for the opportunity to upgrade my pc before I can jump back into the game for more than a quick look. but I'm more interested in hearing about actual game features and interactivity being added. Even the non-productive things... especially these things, because earning credits isn't the point of this game, blazing your trail is. Some people's trails are hard fought and would be better bookended with a social space to tell tall tails over a lavian brandy, perhaps surrounded by their squadron, or meet new friends with similar interests, perhaps while browsing the galaxy map for their next adventure, or catching up on galnet articles, or maybe reviewing the financial spending and earnings over the past few game sessions. just some ideas for things to do at the bar - from an ex barman ;) Cheers!

I spotted the escape pods tucked away in an alcove in the first walkthrough, and planned to go back and pause the vid for another look later. (The looked like escape pods right away, but I assumed they were decorative. Two yellow red and white things side by side.)

Then Zac mentioned them and replayed the video, and my guess turned out to be half right.

Real escape pods mean that fleet carrier interiors will presumably work the same way. If a cmdr is stuck on board after it jumps, they just use the escape pod to teleport to the nearest station.

Also the revelation that in-person contacts at settlements were just the tip of the (planned) iceberg was great to hear.

I've enjoyed many hours in Odyssey since day one of the alpha, but it's great to see new stuff being added. I always thought of the release as a framework for much more varied future content, and although the performance isn't there yet, I see exciting times ahead.

Also, FDev's new approach to reveals and work-in-progress is roughly 400 billion times better than silence.

Thank you for the link. I seldom sit down to watch these as I was at work anyway but I do like to skim through them to pick out the interesting spots.

Update 8 is supposed to be this week, right?

update 8 has been moved to next week, they haven't made a big thing about it but it was snuck in an announcement recently here and Zac brushed over it extremely quickly.

Just to double clarify - what we showed yesterday were Megaship Interiors, not Fleet Carrier interiors :)
Damn... I got it wrong in the title, the bit I cant edit, after I specifically made sure I didn't get it wrong in the post. what a mistaka to maka!

I have to say I wasn't mistaken in real life, just when smashing out the title apparently. I'll edit the main post to try to avoid confusion.

Just watched the part in relation to update 8, nice to put a human face to what is going on to improve ED. The ED staff must have the patience of a saint lol It was interesting, positive and as a player offers some reassurance that its going in the right way. I was just saying in another thread how I would like to see a detailed progress/road map like SC has, but these streams are great also.

I just want to add that the megaship interiors looked amazing. The first one that was shown was huge. Very nice atmosphere and a pretty interesting layout (3 levels). The fact that you can even look out of the windows makes this all the more stunning. Cant wait to see some more of them being placed in future community goals!

I'm going to check out each and every new megaship on the Colonia highway.
