Ettienne Dorn - Too Dark and totally unecessary

Hello Frontier,

I'd like to appeal to you to change the unlock requirements for Ettienne Dorn. Human trafficking is a sickening tragedy and it should not be something Colonia CMDR's are forced to do to unlock a key engineer in the game. I have never been comfortable with the way slavery is depicted in the game, but at least I can ignore that aspect without feeling like the game is punishing me. I am working on a CMDR who will be moving to Colonia, and I shouldn't be forced to choose between my conscience and having this key engineer available to me in the game. I am wrestling with this problem and part of me wants to give up on the Colonia project just because of this one issue. This literally adds nothing to the game other than the knowledge you sold people for nefarious ends. At a minimum please provide an alternative engineer in Colonia for those of us who don't want to go that dark. At least in the bubble there is some overlap of different engineers to appeal to different play styles.

I realize that many people may disagree with this, but I wanted to appeal to Frontier to see if they'd consider making this game just a little less dark, especially when Colonia is supposed to be a bright spot and a place where humanity is trying to leave behind the mistakes of the past.

The game involves choices of morality and ethics.

Someone is offering you something in return for doing something you are morally opposed to. Do you:

  1. Maintain your moral standards? Or,

  2. Sacrifice your morals to get the goodies being offered?

'Change game so I don't have to make that choice' is not really the best answer, especially as it represents an attempt to fundamentally change the nature of the game.

You do realize that by doing nearly everything in ED, you are harming someone right?

Examples:

Collecting mats: you are essentially grave robbing
Trading mats: are they 'ethically' sourced?
Empire: 'ethical' slavery?
Kumo Crew: if you are weak, you are nothing.
Data and exploration: goes direct to Pilots Fed who suppress travel via permits
Alliance: use economic warfare
Feds: use corporate leverage
Illegal goods
Stolen goods
Faction types and the BGS for advantage
Selling for profit- have you thought who gains? Are you supporting an ethically dodgy faction?
Dorn: might be a bit dodgy

Exploration.
Trading.
Archaeology.
Research into Space-based Life-forms.
Search and Rescue.

There are two sides to Elite, which is why I play it. I do engage in combat in the game, but to me this is more sinister and dark and crosses a line. I get it that it's not going to be the most popular view, but I wanted to make my request to Frontier nonetheless. This is the place where I can submit feedback to Frontier, but I also know it is becoming a place where scoring "forum points" in poking fun at folks trumps constructive debate over the game.

Surely the whole point of escape pods is that people -don't- die when you blow their ships up?

Damaged escape pods happen, and you can destroy escape pods too. I'm not going to assume there have been zero deaths in all the ship explosions that have happened in the game.

Regardless, it doesn't even have to be Elite. In any video game is "killing" an npc a dark act that should be left out? I'm not saying there's a right answer. I just find it curious human trafficking is viewed as so unsettling when presumably, human killing is not.

Exploration.

Only if you don't sell your data, or sell your data to a faction who is 'good'- but who is 'good'?

Archaeology.

Rummaging about in ruins? Thats grave robbing. You can tell because Sentinels want you gone.

Research into Space-based Life-forms.

Without any real underlying lore then this can be considered 'safe', albeit if you forget the tissue sampling process.

Search and Rescue.

Again, benign- but is there a link between the BGS and S & R? If a dictatorship befits from recovery via the BGS then you are helping a 'bad' faction.

ED is set in a dystopian hell where 'good' and 'bad' are interchangeable.

if he wants slaves he'd probably just ask for slaves.

maybe he wants occupied escape pods because he wants to encourage people to rescue stranded pilots in Colonia, a less-trafficked, more remote region plagued by a significant pirate presence, without any significant navy presence?

maybe he had a close call in an escape pod of his own one time and the request is sentimental.

are escape pods shielded in any way/do they maintain their own small deflectors like ships without shield generators do? is his main interest in studying the pod's systems' condition in scientifically pristine state while it's still powered and functioning and not the person inside of it?

perhaps he's lonely and secretly hoping he'll win the lottery and get his own salome? the phils are shipped off to whatever station in Colonia they like.

honestly, this was done just to take advantage of an existing gameplay mechanic/flavour they had begun to develop.

if it's not explicitly stated that he wants them for nefarious purposes, your headcanon shouldn't be troubled.
