What I hoped ED combat would become when I bought into it.

Unreal Engine kicks Cobra into touch

I'm not sure about this (and others).
They may look great but how does the game play hold up over time?

I don't know if it's just me, but I think most games these days just seem to be almost too pretty. I cant really explain it, but they all look the same because the graphical fidelity is all the same even if the content is different. Everything looks nice so there is no graphical reason to pick one or the other so it comes down to game play, controls and other mechanics.

I know ED is far from perfect (and hopefully gong to get better and better over time) but somehow it appeals to me more, even in it's current state.

Another example would be No Man's Sky. It looks fantastic and on paper sounds really nice as a concept, but all the videos show much the same thing (albeit different graphic style for each planet etc). What's the actual game content, how does it actually feel in it's controls and immersion etc.

I guess it may be down to the fact that I can actually play ED and therefore know just how good and bad it can be. All these others are just videos and as such give no real feelings as there is no connection with the game. Wait and see I suppose.

I'm just happy that we are seeing a resurgence in these types of game and the more the merrier. I do hope they are all good as we definitely need to get away from the overdone world war shooter genre.

Looks like a cool and entertaining game. I guess it won't hold a candle to ED concerning game world size, but it seems to feature many interesting game play mechanics and is also nice to look at.

The only thing I find slightly concerning is the fact that it's the spiritual successor to the Galaxy on Fire games for mobile devices. Don't get me wrong, those were good games, but they also had an abundance of microtransactions. And that's something I definitely don't want to see in Everspace.

I backed Everspace, but it has nothing to do with Elite style combat. Everspace is arcade quality and was never designed to be anything but. It isn't better or worse than Elite, just different.

I'll play this occasionally when I need a break from my usual raft of games. A palate cleanser, as it were.

"Check out gorgeous looking Saturn-style asteroid rims, a new boost effect on the player ship and other improved VFX, the all-new modular space stations, some fuel mining, gigantic graveyards of capital shipwrecks, the pesky outlaw chief attacking you with his scatter gun as well as the mysterious black hole trap."

Can we get this in Elite Dangerous too?

- gigantic graveyards of capital shipwrecks
- mysterious black hole trap
- Electrical storms that weaken shields
- nebula's that disable your sensors
- greater and larger debris fields
- varied asteroid belt types
- peel able asteroids that let you dig through them?

It looks good. And I would love many of the points above in Elite as well for more diversity. Please don't make me buy this as well. I've hardly got the time to play Elite already. :p

Could anybody characterize the game with a brief summary? I seem to remember they were pretty focused on this being a bit like a roguelike in space (which is why I ignored it so far)? What's the "game loop" like here?

Looks fun that. When is it due for main release?

Around the end of the year I guess, Alpha just started.

I'm part of its Alpha backers so I could try it this week-end. Rougly right now, it plays a lot like FTL, in first person. You travel sectors and find various stuff to upgrade your ship for the current run, and you accumulate credits. If you spend too much time in a sector powerful enemies come to destroy you.
Eventually you either win this run (haven't done it yet, seems pretty hard) or die. Once dead you go back to the hangar and can spend your credits (only there, not during a run) to get permanent upgrades to your ship.

Supposedly it will be tied to some storytelling, but it's obviously not implemented right now.

This game is looking better and better with every video, yes it's arcadey but it also seems a lot of fun and skill based with the leading the reticle to aim the shots and frenetic pace. Since NMS is on hold this might win me over...

That looks like fun. Gorgeous m&kb space fantasy. I look forward to adding it to my collection. Shame about the lack of hotas support. That's a big downer for me but still a welcome addition to the genre.

Played it for an hour or so today.
I know that's not enough time to judge a game, but after coming from elite, this flight model will take some getting used to.
Part of it is because I'm stuck using M&K. Oh how I wish they'd implement HOTAS support.
