Everyone new to the Thargoid war needs to understand first that Sol cannot be defended directly!

Following this very good point in the Thargoid war thread, a very important fact which is not at all obvious for Commanders who became war-involved in the last week—despite being well-known to anyone involved for more than a few months—is that Titan systems are as good as impervious while too many Control systems exist. As Sol is now a Titan system, this now applies to Sol:
  • Defending or evacuating Sol ports has exactly no effect, nor will it while the Titan is present.
  • Attempting to destroy the Titan core has close to zero effect, until the number of Control systems reaches three or fewer (see Titan Vulnerability Changes).
  • For completeness, rescuing Bio-storage capsules from the Titan does help Counterstrike Control systems a bit, despite being inefficient with only four such systems around.
The trouble is that Galnet articles such as Widespread Panic in Sol and Titan Cocijo Devastates Sol System are naming Sol and thus drawing everyone to Sol, along with announcements here such as Titan Presence In Sol promoting a Titan combat strategy prematurely.

The closest Elite itself comes to revealing what one should be doing is this message, with the misleading name The Invasion of Sol:

The Invasion of Sol.jpg

That picture is after scrolling down to the third page of text in that message, where finally it admits:

Titan Cocijo cannot be assaulted directly yet—first the Thargoids must be pushed out of systems around Sol

Many new Commanders are asking first about starship builds and such; as difficult as it can be to resist answering directly, the response really needs to be:
  1. Thankful for helping or seeking to help.
  2. Introduction to the Thargoid War panel on the Galaxy map.
  3. Actual answer to the original question, perhaps in light of understanding the immediate goal.
Here is a picture relevant for the war state this week, intended to show where to find it:

Thargoid War week 106.jpg

Even that panel itself needs scrolling down to see the real useful information, which is that Top Systems list. Throughout the week, that list will provide a live answer to the question of where one should attempt a defence rather than flying to Sol, and in order of popularity which best helps everyone else by aiding concentration.

Exactly what to do in a Invasion system or Control system is another question entirely, although I have a very concise overview close to the top of the Thargoid war thread (start with Invasion systems). I would draw attention to the red Under Attack Port symbol also visible in that picture above, and more specifically in the System map.

Depending how things go and whether future any Invasion systems have hastened timers as they do this week, there may be a future scenario where it becomes better to focus on Control systems first instead, but for now it is best to stop Invasions first. Either way, please get everyone to start from the top of that Thargoid War panel list!

Even if Sol could be defended directly would blowing up a Titan around the orbit of a populated planet be a good idea?
The debris continues on its orbital path, while the explosion knocking anything off said trajectory would probably reduce its size enough to have it burn up in atmosphere, so that's not likely to be an issue.

... while I don't strictly disagree with the premise of the post, it should also be remembered that people seek fun first (especially someone random who just hops into the game without coordinating) and as Sol has at least two permanent conflict zones à la HIP 22460, that may be one of the reasons they are drawn there. And sentimental value, as objectively useless as it may be in actually taking the system back. But I'm sure some will find this post useful nonetheless.

E:D once more does not disappoint in forcing people to find the most crucial piece of information about how to interact with their most important narrative outside of the game.
Because why would anyone ever need this sort of information IN THE GAME, is anyone's guess, and apparently a community fad.

Thank you to players like OP for keeping this up for everyone to see.

Indeed; I've not played for more than a year, saw the recent news and was mulling joining in but... it's the usual ungodly mess of out of game information, forum confusion and focus on only the most obsessive and high end players being able to work out what to do.

And I'm lucky, in that I might be able to adapt in game as I'm still sitting on billions; but I don't know if I can really be bothered to find out what obscure gameplay and very specific AX build I might need... the last time I tried to set up to fight Thargoids, the claims were all for shield-less builds that just got murdered unless you knew a specific way to fly. So I'm not sure I want to bother this time, not even for Sol, if it's going to involve hours and hours of miserable poking about to even try, let alone the fear there's a hidden engineer grind in here somewhere first.

I checked three hours earlier and the numbers were about 1700+.

Meanwhile each control center only had 200+ commanders fighting per system. Probably mostly AXI members.

Honestly, the best approach is to pick the ship you're most comfortable with and iteratively adapt till you get the AX build combo that works for you. Following somebody else's cookie cutter build doesn't always work.

CMDRs tends to follow AXI defense targets at Invasion/Control Systems from a coordinated effort perspective. There are plenty of non-AXI faction wise and independent CMDRs fighting to retake these systems. It has been this way for the whole war effort.
