Everything is very dark

Hi guys,

I play ED with the OR and a GTX970. Hadn't played it since the Beta and now I'm back in. I noticed that the cockpit and the universe in general are much darker. I can see well enough but, when I'm in space, for example, I can only see the area immediately surrounding the areas in the cockpit where there's a light source. Seems fine in stations. I've tried playing with the gamma and brightness settings but nothing seems to help very much. Any ideas ? Thanks !

There was a bug in beta which made everything too bright for some people, welcome back to the dark.

The lighting levels for me are pretty dynamic, just like real life. If youre close to something really bright (like a sun) then space looks very very dark. Travel away and behold! It's all bright again.

I had this too, coming out of the letterbox was an entry into almost pitch blackness, and it wasn't the green blob effect, that others mentioned ( I've since had that, weird). Everyrhing was dark, could only see a couple of stars, and things close to me. Installing my nvidia drivers using perform a clean installation, was what I thought fixed it. I also only installed the drivers, experience and physx, and left out the 3d/hdmi audio.

I also perform some additional (probably superstious) ritual where, if I've had the rift turned off by it's switch, I turn it back on and reboot (think that's what fixed my green blob issue). I also run a config program to check my in game graphics settings. And, finally I check that my graphics card setting in the control panel are what Id set them to. Probably all silly, but hey ho.

Hope this helps!

im having this issue, before starting the game, check that the oculus isnt 'dark' to start with, i frequently have to either restart the PC or unplug the oculus usb to restart the rift to get the screens brightness correct BEFORE i start the game

You should try to change your color settings in your graphic card panel: i got nvidia so i tweaked in the NVcontrol panel for the rift:
contrast: 0
brightness: 32 (can go above to 35)
gamma: 1 (can go below to 0.95)
digital vibrance 65

Not everyone taste but for me it made the game clearer and better

I sometimes experience this - usually after Windows has pending update to apply, for some reason. A reboot fixes it - although the latest nVidia drivers seem better in this regards.

When you're close to the main star the background will be hard to see (that's intentional), but by the time you're 500ls or so away, you should be able to see the detailed dust lanes in the milky way. If not, your Rift is too dark.

There are some things you can do to try and fix it:

* attach to a different graphics port - HDMI or DVI
* set the gamma setting in the game's graphics setting as high as you like (I have mine almost on max I think)
* use your graphics card's colour control settings to adjust brightness contrast and gamma until you get better results (I used to have this set, but ED seems to ignore these settings now, and my Rift is currently behaving itself anyway)
* restart !
